re: Academy Nominations being announced

Sorry if this has already been discussed. But why was Passion of the Christ snubbed for everything. I thought atleast a Besr Actor or screenplay, or even director. What happened? Somenone please explain.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

I didn't think it looked as good as a cartoon would have, nor did it look as good as a movie with real sets would have. It was the ugly in-between the two mediums. It certainly didn't look as good as the Max Fleisher cartoons it was stealing its imagery from.

"Why was neither the Motorcycle Diaries or Bad Education nominated for Best Foreign Language film?"

As I understand it Mamamia, each country decides which one of it's films to submit to the Academy for consideration in the Foreign Film category. Apparently, Spain felt they had a better chance with THE SEA INSIDE than with BAD EDUCATION. Although IMO, BAD EDUCATION is by far the superior film. And it's a shame that Gael Garcia Bernal's performance was overlooked. He was so good in both BAD EDUCATION and MOTORCYCLE DIARIES.

And while it's nice that Sea Inside got a nomination for Best Foreign Film, I am surprised that Javier Bardem was overlooked for an acting nod.
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

I don't think Clive Owen has supporting in the bag. It might go to Morgan Freeman because... he's Morgan Freeman.

I'm surprised Incredibles didn't get a Best Score nom.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Or they could show Thomas Haden Church some loving. The supporting categories could be where the upsets are, especially as the leading categories seem to be foregone conclusions.

So - Best Actor... Does Foxx really have this? What are the chances of DiCaprio v. Depp race instead?
But I won't live alone in a house of regret.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

None whatsoever. I would love to see DiCaprio win to make up for not winning for Gilbert Grape, but Foxx has this in the bag. They could give it to him pre-engraved.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

I would like to see DiCaprio take a well-deserved win for not winning for Gilbert Grape, but I don't think this is it. DiCaprio played Howard Hughes. Foxx became Ray Charles. BIG difference.

I don't disagree with you at all. Just wondering the chances. Cheadle is also EXCELLENT

The chances were not big from Brody either. So there is always a chance. And it would be such a wonderful moment.

The Passion of the Christ received three nominations...

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Well I have seen every film up for Best Picture and would be very happy if Million Dollar Baby, or Finding Neverland win. I honestly did not like The Aviator. I thought the movie dragged from start to finish. I also thought Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind deserved a nod but oh well.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

None of the movies moved me as much as Million Dollar did. So you know that gets my vote.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Right, Jamie Foxx is guaranteed to win Best Lead Actor. There is way too much pressure from the press and outspoken punks like Chris Rock for him not to win it. Now what I'm wondering is whether all hell will break loose if he wins Best Lead Actor AND Best Supporting Actor?

It's too bad that Ray (the film) is getting all of this attention and that pressure from the NAACP for the Academy to diversify its nominees seems to be behind it. Word of mouth about the film simply hasn't been positive enough for me to believe that most voters would honestly rank it high amongst their favorites. If the Academy had nominated Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X for Best Picture (and given The Color Purple the win) all those years ago like they should have, I doubt Ray would be nominated for Best Picture. It doesn't hold a candle to those films in terms of contents and social statements. I have no problem admitting - even as a black man - that I think racial dialogue figures into the voting, but I wish that the Academy would simply encourage innovative films to be made through their voting rather than respond to some highly political agendas.

And on a related note, perhaps they should consider banning campaigning for films. It's really unfair. Seriously, if people don't have the energy to decide which films they want to see themselves, why should they have FYC ads to tell them which unseen films and performances to vote for?

re: Academy Nominations being announced

I disagree. Word for Ray has always been wonderful among the industry. If he wins bor best actor it will be well deserved.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

His performance is being rightly praised and awarded in Ray. The film itself is being greeted much more reservedly. And rightly so. It simply isn't that good.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Fox won't win best lead actor....because he's not. Leo got the Golden Globe after all....and the performances Fox is running against are much better.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

New York,
Fox also got the golden globe. And you are dead wrong. he has a excellent chance of winning.
