re: Academy Nominations being announced

Foxx won the Golden Globe too. And he's won every other award going. He'll win the Oscar. His performance is spellbinding in Ray. The performances he's up against are in some cases as good (and in some cases not, Johnny Depp), but none could really be termed "better".

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Here's my reaction:

1) WHY THE HELL DID 'FINDING NEVERLAND' get a nomination for FILM EDITING????

2) WHY THE HELL DID 'RAY' get nominated for Picture and Directing????

3) WHERE THE HELL ARE THE NOM'S FOR KINSEY?

4) WHERE THE HELL IS THE NOMINATION FOR 'BROADWAY: THE GOLDEN AGE' IN DOCUMENTARY????????????????????

5) WHY THE F*CK IS 'SHARK TALE' NOMINATED FOR ANIMATED FILM????

Wow. Capn feels very strongly about this, I think.

Foxx will surely win Best Lead Actor. Don't count on the Academy surprising you! This ceremony is sewn up just like the one before it.

And Iris, acclaim for Ray as a film has not been widespread...

1, 4, 2, 3, 5

That is the order of my "strong feelings" toward the nominations.

I mean for him as a actor. And many of us loved the film. It was a excellent bio pic.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Oh well we all can think what we want to but in the end The Academy will decide:)

As we have seen in the past sometimes the best actor or actress oscars go to people with a strong body of work over the years and not so much based on the film they got the nom for. Fox has a long way to go. But again, we will all see on Feb 27th:)

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Well we were talking about Ray as a film as a whole, not just in terms of Foxx's performance. It was very far from being an excellent biopic in mine and many other people's opinions. Better than De-Lovely and Beyond The Sea, yes. But that's like saying Backdraft is better than Ladder 49. Ray is not the most fabulous of movies and it is only getting the acclaim by proxy.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

That is just not true. I saw the film months ago at a DGA screening before it got released. And the buzz there was excellent. For both the film and the performances. It did not get its acclaim simply by proxy. Sorry. But that is nonsense.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Hehe..

I disagree. Ray offers an imbalanced portrait of its subject (was its goal really to leave me thinking that he was a pig who suffered childhood trauma?) and doesn't have anything insightful to say about life. If it offered nonstop laughs, I'd forgive the lack of insight. But no, it's downright plodding most of the time.

You want a great biopic? Look no further than the one about the woman in your icon - MOMMIE DEAREST. Nominated for several Razzies and yet it's a cult classic now. Seeing the film for the first time in class, one student at my university even asked, "Did Faye Dunaway win the Oscar for this?" This just goes to show you how certain films and performances really hold up in the long term.

Oh dear god. The film is not getting its aclaim simply by proxy. That is ridiculous.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Evelyn has a point, Iris. The reviews have all been lukewarm about the film whilst raving about Foxx's performance. Fault has been found with the script and with the direction, not least the very abrupt ending.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

The nominations might have looked exactly the same, we don't know that everyone is having the same reaction to 'Kinsey' that Evelyn is. It's been in and amongst a lot of Top 10 lists and gotten a lot of honorable mentions. There's nothing to insist that it would have gotten an Oscar nomination with a stronger studio push.

Maybe the nominators just liked other movies more.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Pop;
All that I am saying is that at the industry screenings before the movie was even released to the public; the film was being well recieved and liked by the voting academy community. No matter what you or Evelyn or the local newspaper in Buffalo thought ( not that you live in Buffalo; just tring to make my point), the film is recieveing its accolade because it was liked by the people who vote. Not by proxy.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

If Charles Ray hadn't passed away, would RAY still be getting all this attention?

CapnHook: I thought the exact thing: if Charles was still alive, would this movie even have been made? Although I can admit that I saw RAY twice - disliked it the first time, but was able to just enjoy it the second time - it does not deserve it's directing and picture nominations, and Foxx certainly does not deserve to win the Oscar. We all know it will happen - it's inevitable at this point - but his performance as Ray and the entire film overall is no better than a Sunday afternoon Lifetime Original Movie.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Thinking in terms of the future...

Is anyone else dreading Johnny Depp's practically inevitable nomination for playing Willy Wonka? I say that if Gene Wilder couldn't get awards for his interpretation, then no one else should.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Judging from the first trailer, inevitable is a VERY early call, Evelyn.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

I suspect it'll be a while before any year comes close to trumping 2002 for me. That was the one year when I agreed with all of the nominations (except the Dennis Quaid slight for Far From Heaven).
