Something which I have suggested in the past, and seen utilized on other boards, is to have small waiting period between when you join the site and when you're first permitted to post. For example, you're not granted posting priveleges until you have been a member for one week (or whatever discretionary period is decided upon). It essentially forces new members to lurk for a few days before posting, that would hopefully help limit the dozens of newbie mistakes we get everyday, and people would get a feel for the atmosphere of the board before really deciding if they want to throw themselves to the wolves.
I had been pretty vocal about thinking that creating an Old Farts Board would have been preferable to the Student Board, but alas, I had no influence. Unfortunately, I think that the Student Board was undermined when a former moderator treated it as a punishment when he "banished" kids to the Student Board. My hope for it was that it would be perceived as a safe place to go and carry on about all that stuff without fearing the "adults" charging in and getting snarky. I know that I have gone off on kids for complaining about their parents in threads on the OT board, but I would never consider attacking the same poster/same post if it was on the Student Board. I could, in theory, but I wouldn't...because that's the appropriate place for discussions like that. I also think that the name Student Board was taken a tad to literally...it doesn't have to be posts just about school.
I have a similar vision for the Old Farts Board...no strict rules, no secret passwords...just a place that is designated for people who fall into the older end of the age spectrum. I would hope that no one would go postal if a younger person had something valid and relevant to add to a discussion posted, but I would expect that younger people would respect the idea that the Old Farts Board isn't their niche. Everyone could still read whatever board they want to read, but might think twice about jumping into a discussion on the Old Timers Board that they might be more likely to enter into on the OT board.
I think that it becomes problematic if one tries to "over patrol" and set too many rigid rules and regulations. I see the idea of having multiple boards as a positive force, not an exclusionary one. Think about how things shake out at a big family gathering... the adults tend to gather in one area and the kids head toward another spot and the young adults might even be in another room... but it's never a rigid division...some kids just naturally hang in the adults room, even if they aren't doing much talking, and there are always the adults who enjoy the kids room more. The OT board is like the dining table where everyone comes together.
I absolutely support the creation of an additional board to support another optional "environment", be it the Modern Maturity Board, the Serious Discussion Board, or the Grown-Up Room. Just as the OT board has a different character than the OT board or the Student Board, I think the new one would also develop its own tone. But I would strongly advise against making things too complicated or over-controlled.
ANything but "modern-maturity" -- it sounds SO old!
Just for the record, my tongue was planted FIRMLY in my cheek when I suggested Modern Maturity.
oh, flit, i so want to see you on the "modern maturity" board. can we have a "lowered expectations" board too?
Hey...I pierced my freakin' nose. That's ought to qualify me as being modern, although mature, not so much...
yer a prevention article come to life, dearie.

I know I am a little late in this but this is my say:
Yes, I can be the teen with grammar mistakes. I think an adult board would work. I know I wouldn't look at it only because I don't classify anything near adult, but I know all of you adults would appreciate it a lot! Don't worry guys, my english teacher this year is really into grammar and I've learned a lot from her. I'm getting better at it!!
"I think that the Student Board was undermined when a former moderator treated it as a punishment when he "banished" kids to the Student Board."
Iflit, thank you for being an adult/old fart/modern mature person who is willing to say this out loud. I expressed frustration about this in the past - and was completely ignored. Perhaps if something could be done to remove the stigma of the SB as the BWW Recycle Bin, it would ease the frustrations of those on this thread a bit.
omg, the student board rules! i lurk there all the time and wish i was a student again so i could post. they're so lucky to have their own place to go and for the fact that they can make whatever they want of it without the interference of pushy adults! god, if only us older people had a place like that, but i guess we'll just have to soldier on and try to hide our jealousy.
That irked me from the very onset of the Student Board. It was preordained to fail.
I wonder if anyone actually bothers to moderate the Student Board? Who KNOWS what's being discussed over there, lol.
you think i'm kidding about lurking.
Papa, I'm trying to be proactive. I've tried to be proactive on the Student Board by starting and/or participating in social threads, I'm trying to be proactive here by making suggestions that may lead to greater board harmony. If you have any constructive criticism to offer me, I would welcome it; but I don't appreciate being mocked.
that was not mocking, that was an honest attempt to stir interest in the student board. the fact that you are so defensive as to assume that i was mocking you (and arrogant enough to think that i pay more than passing attention your posts) is a crystal clear argument for an adult board.
CM...I believe his mockery was aimed more at me, not to worry.
papalovesmambo for Student Board Moderator '06? If you're hanging there anyway, at least you should make yourself useful.
the state has asked me very nicely not to associate with children. something about warping their minds beyond all recognition...
"That was not mocking."
Papa - in that case, you have my apology for being snippy and jumping to conclusions.
It's true that I tend to be defensive when it comes to this issue. I've received some pretty nasty messages from people over my opinions on the Student Board which were insulting and unwarranted. However, that's my problem and not yours. You have my apologies.
i'm sorry, i only accept apologies that are delivered from all fours in gaellic in the key of a with lute accompaniment. but i'll take yours under advisement as a public service to the board.
Damn! I knew I shouldn't have sold my lute on eBay...
colleen_lee - while that probably makes the most sense, I don't think anyone would really be interested enough to wait around a whole week for posting privelages..
Thats the point Sally anyone truly interested would wait around a week.

Well it doesn't have to be a week (that was just an arbitrary length of time), I've seen sites utitlize a 24 hours waiting period, a 3-day waiting period, and there was one that had a 1-week waiting period.
When I first joined this board, I knew some musical theatre and Broadway history but I didn't know much at all about forums like this one. I certainly wouldn't have waited around a week, not knowing what is in store here. My point is, is it really fair to expect EVERYBODY to be exactly the way you want them right off the bat? I understand no one wants to waste their time with pointless threads, but still...

Sally, they're saying a week, not a year. It's seven days. I know that I lurked here for several months before I even created an account. An extra week would have been nothing.
And even if it did prevent people from sticking around, they're probably not those who would have contributed much in the first place.
I'm not really advocating that a limit be placed on first time posters, but I don't think it's something that couldn't work.
Actually, if I'm not mistaken, some boards won't let members start threads until they've been a member for some predetermined amout of time. That sounds like a pretty fine idea to me.
