"I'm not really advocating that a limit be placed on first time posters, but I don't think it's something that couldn't work."
That's true. I withdraw my argument.

"I certainly wouldn't have waited around a week, not knowing what is in store here"
although you'd have to wait around to post here, you would be able to see what's in store by reading the threads, no?.

"Sally, they're saying a week, not a year. It's seven days. I know that I lurked here for several months before I even created an account. An extra week would have been nothing. "
Exactly Kringas. I was here for a few months before I felt compelled enough to create an account and post, I could have waited another 7 days.
The waiting period before starting a new thread would be a fine idea too. The majority of the problem seems to be people coming in who have never even glanced at the board creating the same newbie style threads and asking the same stupid questions over and over and over again.

Posted: 2/19/06 at 8:53pmYes, but I don't know of many people, serious or not, who would spend 7 days looking around, that's all. I'm most likely wrong, I just don't see it playing out that way. But I do agree that it could work very well.

But why not, Sally? I can't believe there are so many people who stumble onto a message board and after being there for two seconds decide "I have to sign up!" Sometimes taking time is the best way to find what's right for you. The fact that I naturally chose to lurk at first is a reason why I've never joined ATC. After spending some time there, I realized it wasn't my cup of tea.
Really, what sort of threads are we missing if there was a week long moratorium on new posters? The hundredth "Who is your favorite Elphaba?" thread?
Hell, some sites (like Metafilter) actually stop taking new members from time to time.

Posted: 2/19/06 at 8:58pmI spent much more than 7 days reading this board before joining and posting. Same with every other board I've participated in. I like to see if it's for me or not.

Posted: 2/19/06 at 9:00pmI probably didn't do that just because BWW was the first forum I've ever joined...I sort of assume something different. I just don't want others to be discouraged by anything, if that makes sense. I get where you're coming from though, and agree that waht you're saying makes more sense.

Posted: 2/19/06 at 9:03pmWell, it's as simple as this - If you want something today, but don't want it a mere seven days later, you probably didn't want it all that much to begin with.

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, some boards won't let members start threads until they've been a member for some predetermined amout of time. That sounds like a pretty fine idea to me.
I'm ALL for that idea.

This happens on every single message board I've used. The members with more seniority are constantly trying to preserve their cyber paradise, reminising about how things used to be, and blaming the "state the message board is in" on the new, younger members.
I just don't know what it is. But does anyone else find that interesting? It happens everywhere...

heh, I'll admit, not much. It's 19 pages! That was more of a response to the entire "adult board" revolution, and complaints about stupid new teengers who joined the board and now create stupid theads and make stupid posts.
I really can't say if I'm for or against the idea, since I'm very very new here, I'm just saying I think that's just the nature of message boards.

forni-Kate, you might want to read the whole thread before you post. True it's 19 pages, but it's also 19 pages worth of information that will spare you from looking like a jackass when you post.

I am absolutely in favor of a time limit before posting and a time limit before starting threads. A system I have seen some other boards use to great effect is "moderated status." Until you reach a certain number of posts your post will not appear until a moderator has checked its appropriateness. After a while you are given more priveleges, you earn them.
I was also a lurker for months before I started an account, posted very rarely immediately after becoming a member and only gradually began to understand the place and feel comfortable here. I still only rarely start threads, although I post whenever and wherever I please.
It is a process and I think that process is important for any new member to go through. Posting immediately and starting millions of threads seems an attempt to impose your will on others, that is certainly not a right.
