Posted: 2/19/06 at 10:53pmSeems kind of unfair to posters like Emcee, who post a lot but post very well. (And yes, I'm using Emcee as a more dignified example when I really mean me, me, ME!)

Posted: 2/19/06 at 10:55pmthat certainly would put a limit on a lot of that private bantering that goes on so often.

The private bantering among three or four at a time is exactly what this site entertaining.
I could see though people basically holding their post until the later part of the day? The board would be dead as folks counted . . . and then they would use of all of their posts within a certain period of time!
Kapostboom.

Posted: 2/19/06 at 11:00pmI like the idea of a waiting period for new members. I don't know if restricting the total number of posts is the best thing to do. Maybe just do that for new members for the first month or so.

Posted: 2/19/06 at 11:01pmJose, you and I have discussed this in the past, and perhaps it was Jose the poster, not Jose the moderator making the "banished to the Student Board jokes", but whatever the exact wording you used, your attitude of the Student Board as a place to keep the kids out of the way was a common perception, and not just mine.

Posted: 2/19/06 at 11:01pmI am still in favor of controling content of posts rather than number, fewer people posting more intellegently is my preference. (even though it is a pipe dream)

At a board I used to post at, they had "Karma" levels. And basically..just don't piss the moderators off, and you get good karma. The more karma you have, the higher your level is (kind of like our understudy, broadway legend statuses). And the higher your level is, the more priveleges you have: unlimited posting, or maybe you can only post 2 times per hour. Depends on your karma level. If you do something against the Terms of Service, or something that's...frowned upon, it either results in a loss of karma, or temporary restriction on posting.
And what they do in terms of moderating, they have sort of...reported abuse go through (called the metatag system) and first the users determine whether it's really to be considered inappropriate or not, and the moderators make the final call.

Posted: 2/19/06 at 11:11pmWe only have 3 (or 2, or 2.5, or 4) moderators here, and hundreds if not thousands of posters. It would be a bit unmanagable for the poor mods.

Well, liotte, I didn't mean it was EXACTLY that, but the moderators can set the limited number of posts. And as you move up in ranks, the number of posts you can post per [time limit] increases, until you eventually have no limits.
The problem is that now since it hasn't really been put in action to begin with is whether people can deal with starting with a clean state. If not, then how are you going to classify people in terms of status?
