Watching the trailer for "United 93" ... I still think, how was airport security at the time that all those people could bring in weapons on a plane and in completely different cities?
Wouldn't it make more sense if security was right before you board the plane, and not before going to wait for it? I just imagined of all the things that anyone could manage to bring in to a plane after security..the place is full of employees and shops, restaurants, etc - things come and go, why is security then, not right on an airplane's gate?
On a similar note, I flew about a month ago for the first time in a year or so. I was shocked at how lax it's gotten again, in general.
I was impressed at the security at W. Palm Beach airport thursday. The man behind me on the line for security check asked one of the officers if this was the line for Section C. Well, it was plainly stated on several signs, and also, his ticket was checked before he reached to this point, that this was the line for C. He asked the officer two times, and the officer kind of brushed it off, simply saying, yes, section C. But then I noticed that this guy was chosen for the more intense check on the side.
Every time I fly I manage to get "chosen" for the more intense check, and that's no lie. I kind of expect it now.

If I go on a plane in an instance of a one way ticket or a recently purchased ticket, I get the intense check.
I'm not sure how the security people know if it's one way or recent but I'm sorta glad they do it.
By the way, the stuff they sell AFTER security I think has to be double-checked with FAA to make sure it passes standards.
Wouldn't it make more sense if security was right before you board the plane,
that is how it is in many places in Europe....each gate has it's own metal-security detector as you get on.......at least in Vienna they do, and yes, makes much more sense......but we are a cheap country and no airline, nor the government will foot the cost.
you want to talk very lax security? We just got back from taking some pix of Air Force 1, and there is, supposedly only ONE way into the airport.
But....we parked at signature services, right by the rental car places, and the gate between the two was open, something it never is......so we walked in right past the rentalcar lots and took our pix........ridiculous......as we were close enough that people could do damage.
That is ridiculous, you would've thought they would think security measures better...hope nothing bad happens again.
Now four inch scissors are allowed on board, that's pretty long if you see a pair.
4-inch scissors have blades that are longer than box cutters!
I remember I flew pretty soon after 9/11 and really airport security had not changed. I thought it would be really tough, that's how everyone was saying it was, that's how it should have been. But it was the standard everyday thing. The only problem we had was when my mother wanted to bring on tweezers. The jerks has the nerve to point out that my father could very well be a terrorist, as he is plainly from the Middle East. Jackasses. And that's sadly all that changed I think, was that now everyone was in suspicion.
and metal knitting needles, plastic, whatever have ALWAYS been allowed........crazy
It's a nice idea, but they would have to hire thousands more people in order to have security checks at the gates. It would cost billions, since you would need metal detectors and baggage screening machines for each gate, plus at least 2 security people.

Sally, you just argued against yourself in the space of one post. It was lax, but they were too strict?
By the way, how did everything ever work out with that poor young actor lad who died of AIDS from acting in your town?
Sadly it must happen again before we get the message.Americans do not want to be inconvienced anymore hence the relaxation of the rules. The pilots & attendants know it is insanity but .....
This time around however, after 9/11 , I think people would fight back. Security has gotten to be a joke & that will be exploited

"Americans do not want to be inconvienced anymore hence the relaxation of the rules."
Seriously Roxy, exactly what makes you think that's the cause of any perceived "relaxation of the rules?" Given that travelers have absolutely no power over any of the screening procedures? "Americans" do whatever the screening personel say they have to do. And I've never seen a single suggestion box in all of my travels wherein opinions about the "inconvenience" complaints could be registered.
so suzycat, Austrias largest airport can afford it, yet we can't? Perhaps it's the billions we're spending in Iraq that makes it impossible.......

I feel like I'm being molested everytime I go to fly... To quote somebody on Airline, "Why am I SSSS'd?!"
On the other hand, as someone who either flies into or out of DC all the time, it actually seems to have gotten stricter. One time, they took the nail file/scissors out of my checked luggage. The last time I flew out, I had to go through one of those air blower-sniffer things, but I just thought it was a metal detector, so I nearly had a heart attack when they turned it on.
austria has 55 airports.
the united states has 14,893.
It's always about size with you Papa.
oh, please, somms, the only commentary i hear from you on airport security is a semi-regular plea for compulsory body cavity searches. i've told you, all you have to do is request one and they'll oblige.
You know gol dang well they wrote the training manual after the one they gave me at Heathrow.
oh god..the epic. what was the final tally on "inspectors" on that anyway?
17 gave there all for the Queen
