Just because the employees weren't in the country legally doesn't mean they were being abused.
So they're employing illegal aliens just to screw over legal citizens who need jobs?

Aside from being over-priced and unoriginal, I choose not to support American Apparel. Their owner, Dov Charney, has been sued numerous times for sexual harassment. He, himself, is very open about his views of women in and out of the work place.
"It's inhumane to cast my sexuality in a negative light. It's the same as poking fun at a homosexual or a transvestite or a woman who sleeps with many men. How can you watch Tony Soprano and the next day be so antiseptic? You can't expect people to operate in a vacuum outside of popular culture." - Dov Charney, New York Times '06
On one hand I agree with you, but masturbating in front of employees? I'm not sure if that's professional... or respectful.

I think the people they hired happened to be illegal not that they were out looking for some illegals.

ok I take it back. I just came from the newer larger store on Bleecker and 6th. I bought a ton of stuff! I thought the prices were pretty fair, except for leggings, which I can get for less than $28.
Between AA and Loehman's yesterday, I have a new wardrobe!

Posted: 9/23/09 at 12:31pmI was at the University of Pittsburgh a few weeks ago and I was surprised to see a small American Apparel squeezed into their little strip of shops. I agree that they seem overpriced for "basics", but to me, it's no different than buying Calvin Klein underwear vs. Fruit of the Loom. There are tees with cuts and colors you won't find for five bucks at H&M. I haven't been to French Connection in years, but AA's array of tees immediately reminded me of FC, though I would say that the quality of FC's tees is better. I think one would be more impressed with their selection by checking out the website, becasue when you walk into an AA you will definitley be smacked with the whole, "Wow, rows upon rows of bright ass $30 tee shirts" thing.

Posted: 9/23/09 at 2:09pmI agree that the CEO seems like a creep, but there's always going to be a catch. I think supporting AA does less overall harm to people than buying clothes which are made in what are essentially sweatshops. And yep, even stores with good reputations (such as Target) have people working overseas for very little pay.

Unoriginal? Not at all.
Abercrombie and Hollister are unoriginal. American Apparel has always had the same funky clothes and had stood up for things such as Gay rights. It also doesn't apologize for it.

Posted: 9/23/09 at 11:34pmI don't see where they're so pricey. Yes, $28 for leggings is high, but all the other items I checked were either in the $20 and $30 range.
