Has anyone been by the real house? I did when I lived in NY. Creepy. I don't rember what neighborhood of Long Island it was in. Anyone?
Amytiville
But isn't it in a enclosed neighberhood? I always used to get this house and Billy Joels "Glass House" confused.

I've been there. The people on that street are really fed up with gawkers who come to find the original house.
The whole story was a hoax, you know.
So they say. I don't care. I loved the book. I scared the **** out of me when I read it. ( I was 14).

NEWSDAY did an expose on the story and photographed key locations in the house. The mysterious red room under the staircase was really a liquor cabinet and a door that had to open out into a hallway (for plot purposes) actually opened into a room. Threre were plenty of other inaccuracies in the book too.
I, too, devoured the book. Now I'm too much of a cynic to enjoy a thing like that.

It's on Ocean Avenue in Amityville. I've driven by a few times. Its still scawwwy!
Dollypop,
Were the inconsitencies mentioned in the article with the book? Or the movie?
I go to school about 20 mintues away from the house. After my friends and I saw House of Wax, we called my sister-in-law for directions. We didn't bother the current owners, but we all really wanted to check it out. It's still pretty creepy.

The inconsistencies were in the book. As I don't go to movies, I don't know how faithful the film was to its source material.
I went by the house once, 25+ years ago---it really creeped me out!
I had the same impression. Anybody have a link with picturees of the house?

The real house
PS The real house did have eye windows when the DeFeo's lived there. Later owners changed them.

That creeped me out! But that house looks like it had a makeover. You sure thats the right house?
That's the one, DAME. It's one of the only houses I've ever seen that has its side to the street.
I read that book (as a teenager) in one sitting! It totally freaked me out.
But I took it as a work of fiction, based on a few facts, even then.
Still... I rarely (if ever) can read books in one sitting.
I read both Amityville and The Shining in one sitting.
Not back to back, I'm assuming...
...unless you had a chamber pot with you!
...And WAIT, the Shining is pretty damn long! Are you an Evelyn Wood graduate?
Actually, I am B12B, but The Shining still took me all night.
