That is simultaneously awesome and creepy. Ever since Blink, I've never looked at stone angels quite the same way...

I'm so excited for Hamlet! Will be watching, but might not watch it all since it runs late. But I'll definitely DVR it to watch in full later. And I pre-ordered the DVD.

This 2 parter has officially become one of my favorites in the ENTIRE Doctor Who run. There was a moment in this episode that I nearly peed my pants, I was so tense. That one moment was scarier than the whole episode of "Blink." I, literally, said out loud, "OH SH*T!" I don't know how I feel about the end of the episode. It was just SO abrupt and out of no where. But MY GOD that was brilliant.

This episode frustrates me quite a bit. It's good. Still hasn't beat my absolute favorite two-parter, but still good, and definitely best of the series. Certain parts were fascinating and others terrifying. Amy is, as always, given a good part to work with (Oh my God, the end! I can't wait for next week). River Song-wow! But there is one thing that bothers me more than anything that sort of took away from the Weeping Angels some of the creepiness they had in Blink (and in the first part of these two episodes). Well, perhaps three things.

SPOILERS BELOW:


-I'm actually a bit annoyed that the Angels are no longer 'the only psychopaths in the universe to kill you nicely'. That whole bit made them fascinating (along with their 'quantum locked' biology). The whole 'break their necks' thing isn't exactly not-scary, but it doesn't make them as interesting, either. It could have gotten really interesting what-with all the other time stuff going on.

-The Angels moved on camera! One of the best and creepiest parts of Blink was that even when no character was looking, while on camera the Angels still wouldn't move until the camera lost sight of them as well. It made them more 'real'. The moving on camera took away some of that creepiness that was initially there. Though, granted, if I were Amy in that situation I would have been terrified.

-I can't believe the Angels didn't know Amy's eyes were closed the whole time. I mean, in 'Blink' and the 'Time of Angels' they seem hyper-aware of any time people either close their eyes or can't see them. Surely that biological quality that switches them off when people see them would also allow them to move if people can't. If they can't help turning to stone (and, presumably, don't have the chance to think about whether they're being watched), then shouldn't the same happen in reverse? You know, 'every action has an equal and opposite reaction' and all that.

I loved the way the episode referenced time, though, and the crack and what could be done to it. And River Song...I think the man she killed was, well...the Doctor. It sure seems that way. Which would complicate their relationship. Yet, if the Doctor still chooses to save her after all that...I wonder what that even means.

Moffat has really abandoned all logic in his plotting, and I gave up on getting what the hell was going on with the story about ten minutes into this episode. That said, I did enjoy it nonetheless, because I love spending time with Eleven and Amy.

There just...didn't seem to be any point to Moffat using the Angels if he kept changing them up all the time. And the clerics were just cannon fodder, though the actor playing Octavian was fab, as was the slightly plaintive vocal delivery of Angel-Bob. I think that "We have no need of comfy chairs" might be my new favorite villainous catchphrase. :)

Amy's terrified walk through the forest was well-done, as was the Doctor's heartfelt parting with her, but again, the episode as a whole lacked the beautifully-constructed feel of really good vintage Moffat, and had about ten minutes of needless padding there in the forest where everyone kept kind of wandering around to fill time. Oh, and Amy not being able to find the communicator which was TWO INCHES FROM HER HANDS AND BEEPING was a bit much. But if I get started on the lack of internal logic in this episode I'll never stop, so.

Matt Smith and Karen Gillan still rock and I'm still watching, is the upshot. I just haven't quite fallen in love with Moffat's Who yet, because it hasn't wowed me more than momentarily.

I'm of the opinion that the more a writer writes for Doctor Who the more obvious their faults in writing become. Steve Moffat was so brilliant before because he had written only one or two episodes per series, and Davies by comparison seemed sloppy because he wrote most of each series and we were more exposed. Personally, I don't see much of a difference between the two, and Series 5 doesn't feel radically different from any other series at all except for Amy, who is the most unique character Doctor Who has seen so far. If Russel T. Davies came back to write one episode per season, that episode would likely be really good. They're both good writers, though, and it is a science fiction show, and I'm willing to let things slide. Although I had been in love with the Angels not moving on camera before in Blink. It was so effective!

I suppose in terms of the rest of the series', Series 5 is doing really well. Series 4 is still my favorite, but I do love how Moffat uses time in this series. And I have a feeling the finale is going to be epic. (It's always epic, but for some reason-perhaps River Song's comments in the last episode about meeting again-I feel like this will be really, really epic.)

It must be hard to come up with 6 or 7 good stories for a science fiction series. I just hope Moffat's 'time can be re-written' thing isn't used to explain away too much.

Nifty thing that other people noticed: In the forest parting scene, when the Doctor comes back for a moment to tell Amy to remember what he told her when she was seven, he's wearing his jacket. Which the Angels took from him, and which he isn't wearing for the rest of the episode. So either that's a massive continuity error, or for some reason the Doctor crossed his own timeline and approached Amy at a moment when he knew she'd have her eyes closed to remind her of the first time they met. He's way more emotional then, too - kissing her on the forehead, moist eyes. OOH SUSPENSE.

I had to go back and rewatch that scene; I totally missed that the Doctor was wearing his jacket, and upon second viewing I can see why -- we only see part of his shoulder, and it's clear when you know to look that the jacket is on. Now I need to go back to Eleventh Hour to see what he told her when she was 7!

Okay, I've only seen the first three episodes of the new season, but no one has commented on the "crack".

I think it's a distinct possibility that Roae & DT's Doctor could make a return...

Not happening, Magdalene. Moffat is busy making the show his own; bringing back old characters yet a-freaking-gain would be counterproductive.

I'm kind of entertained by how the crack looks like a smile. And I'm definitely entertained by being puerile and calling it Amy's Crack.

If a multi-doctor story is done for the show's 50th anniversary, Tennant MIGHT take part, but I'm with Spider, I think Billie Piper is done with Who.
