Isn't that funny? The people that I watched it with found the last 10 minutes manipulative and sappy. I did find the ending manipulative, but didn't care, because it was very beautiful. I thought Amy's sunflowers would come into play somehow, and was a little surprised when they weren't in the museum when they took Vincent there. Shouldn't have been, though, because in retrospect, I realized that in Vincent"s reality, he hadn't painted them yet. D'oh!

Great casting with the actor playing Vincent.

Funnily enough, spider, I liked the episode on the whole but didn't love those last ten minutes. I get what they were going for, but I actually think that the Doctor has been really irresponsible this season and wanted to see some sort of comeuppance -- like, since Van Gogh magically knew that his work would be revered, he started painting for the wrong reasons and his work lost a lot of its later relevance, or something. I really didn't like that the Doctor took Van Gogh to the museum, as sentimental a moment as it created. I think we're meant to take that Rory's erasure is a consequence of the Doctor's irresponsibility with regard to time/space/the crack in time and space, but that seems like it's going to be reversible, and it seems like the Doctor hasn't learned anything at all from that experience.

Jeez, I hate to be so negative! What does it say that I really want something bad to happen to the Doctor? I like Matt Smith, but they need to be going somewhere with the Doctor messing up so often, and not just him apologizing to the little boy last week. I wish it were a consistent theme, and this episode could've done a lot towards establishing it.

I mean, I liked the actual human element of the story, but HATED the monster. I wish they would have done a monster-less episode and just showed the madness (and love) of Van Gough.

I agree with spider. I thought the monster was poorly done. I liked the last ten minutes, especially that bit where they were all laying on the ground looking at the sky. But I did think the use of that song in the museum segment was over doing it. I felt like I was watching a different show while it was playing, because Doctor Who doesn't have that type of music to set scenes.

I've seen comments elsewhere that indicated people considered Vincent and the Doctor to be more a character-driven episode and the creature was secondary.

Still reading RTD's book -- and it made me cry on the bus yesterday!! I had reached the part where there was an early draft of the last scenes in EOT part 2 from the Doctor's crash landing in the Mansion to the scenes with all the companions. I had to stop reading before I got to Donna's wedding because the tears were starting to flow!

I just don't understand why this season, they feel they HAVE to show a monster (which is 99% badly CGI'd). In the Davies' era, there were unseen monsters and people in make-up/puppetry. I mean, think of "Midnight," "The Doctor Dances," "Blink," "Girl in the Fireplace," "Silence in the Library" (which had CGI shadows, but very convincing), etc. That was a lot better to me. Honestly, I would rather them have a couple episodes where the villain isn't someone from a far off planet, but a human right here on Earth.

Can't remember if I mentioned this or not, but David's fan club has been trying to raise money for a seat in the new Royal Shakespeare Company's theatre in Stratford. This is for their "Take a Seat" campaign, where people could buy a seat at one of three price levels -- £1500, £2500 or £5000 -- and have the name of someone special -- a loved one for example on that seat. The fans wanted to get a seat named for David, and today we got the word that we had reached the top price level for a seat with David's name on it. Check the details at the link:

Ah, that part of Davies' book is really sad. Just the development of the end of the 10th Doctor's era. It is wonderful to get inside Davies' head for those moments, though. ]

I felt like RTD's era was more character driven, despite the monsters, and that Moffat's series is more plot driven. I think they're both brilliant, but it's certainly a change in feel from the previous few years to this one.

And I'm so excited about Torchwood! I hope it lives up to its potential. Children of Earth was so good, and if it can get better than I'm all for it.

I think "Children of Earth" is the best thing in the whole DW and Torchwood canon.

That Torchwood will be in partnership with a cable channel makes me happy----we'll likely lose less of what makes Captain Jack Captain Jack!
The thought that Fox was originally said to be involved scared me quite a bit!

"The Lodger" is HANDS DOWN the best episode of the season and quite possibly has joined the top 5 of my all time favorite DW episodes. It was sweet, freaky, HILARIOUS, and just one hell of an episode. If Matt Smith didn't all ready win me over (Which he has).....he did in this episode.

I have no idea why, but I found it a bit dull and hard to pay attention to. I did like the touch at the end with Amy and the ring, but mostly it felt pointless next to most of the episodes of the series.

That trailer at the end, though. That's making me very excited.

I just absolutely adored it. It showed the Doctor as he really is - an alien stuck on Earth - and it showed his complete lack of understanding on how we do things. I thought it was leaps and bounds better than last week. Granted, I think it was a mistake to put it right before the finale, but I loved it all the same

I've always got that impression off of the Doctor, though. For me, it didn't really need to be a whole episode. I just didn't really get the point of it, I guess. And the end was 'love conquers all' which was a bit...well, for all the complaints people have against RTD he never did that. (And it was done twice this series, now and in 'Victory of the Daleks').

Not to say Matt Smith wasn't good. He was. He's gotten better since the beginning of the series.

But, ah, the trailer!

I thought this episode was fun. Loved that tiny nod to last week's episode that was an advert for the Van Gogh exhibit stuck to Craig's fridge. Nice and subtle touch.

True, and apparently, things that weren't in the series have also been leading up to the finale. Judging from the clip.

I really, really, really hope the Daleks aren't those colorful ones because that might just ruin the seriousness of the episodes for me.

(And another part of me is wondering why the Daleks would attempt an attack with other alien races in the first place. Wouldn't they kill everyone first? Actually, that goes for pretty much all the attackers! No good can come from this...)
