I have some vibrato, but I've noticed that musical theater is ALL about it.
any tips on working with it?
Vibrato is something that your voice does naturally when your're singing correctly so just try to really relax while singing. After all, vibrato is simply your vocal chords virbrating... so just try to keep it relaxed. It's a really hard thing to try to explain since it is such a natural thing that you can't really force. Also... sometimes doing a vibrato on a cressendo well really help you hear and feel how it all works, well it does for me at least. Hope that helps some :)
thanks. =]

I would say just let it develop naturally, I didn't have ANY in my voice until one day at a voice lesson it was all over the place.

It's not good to force it! As was said, let it develop, continue to practice and practice correctly. You'll feel it, it just clicks. Just support and work the soft palate!
thanks.
quick theater/dance related story
so i decided i want to be able to do the splits because i figured if it was needed in a dance or something (drowsy-chaperone-show-off-esque). So I was working on it today, sitting with my legs as far streched as they could go for like 15 minutes. i got up and it hurt a little (lot) bit.
and i'm still a bit sore. mer
Yeah, if you want to increase, 30 seconds at a time is the right amount to stretch your muscles. After you've warmed them up. Actually, this applies to building vibrato too. When your chords are warmed up and flexible, then they'll produce vibrato. So don't force the sound in your throat (i.e. don't belt and expect it to come), use plenty of air to support, and practice. It'll come eventually.
never ever force it, youll ruin your voice
good luck! itll develop over time, mine did =)
i hope so.
yeah, most of the time forcing isn't a good idea, so i figured as much for voice.
but i'm only 16, so i figure my voice is still changing.

This is probably not going to help you...
I just woke up one day and had it. o_O
Yeah, defiedgravity...one day in a lesson my voice teacher was just like "support and open your mouth" and it was there.
I have to say though, working on your breath control helps.
Yep, I'm 15. I don't have a LOT, but I do have it. I remember taking a chorus when I was 10 or so and the teacher would yell at me "YOU'RE TOO YOUNG DON'T MAKE YOURSELF HAVE VIBRATO" and I remember thinking I CANT HELP IT ITS REALLLLLLLLLL"
haha you'll get there =)
yeah. i mean i can do it sometimes, like if i'm messing around and singing "my new philosophy" i have no problem there. but if i'm singing a song from Millie or something, it's only there a bit.
semi-frustrating
I totally agree. For me I can only get it on really high notes, hardly ever in lower ones, NEVER in my chest voice.

HAhaha, I used to have trouble getting it in the lower notes. But it's all about the 'up' and support. Just stretch the soft palate and it'll get there!
You know, about the splits. I'm a guy and one day in dance, I just plopped down and had one. I'm also a dancer, so who knows!? hahaha! My dance teacher would tell us all, while watching TV, when the commercials come on, get in your split and stretch till the TV show is back on and continue throughout every other commercial.
yep. i already feel myself getting closer. it seems rediculous to say after 3 days, but i'm less sore now. good news for me. =]
honestly...just singing more and more. Do it healthfully though. hahah.
I just read you said you're sore...
that's bad.
lol.
When you're singing anything in Musical Theatre you should be supporting with your diaphragm and all tension should be there; there shouldn't be any stress on your vocal chords. If you're vocal chords are sore then you're pushing to hard on them. Just do breathing exercises to build that up too.
Just work. It comes with time and work =] don't fret over it though. Honestly, there are plenty of working actors who don't have these crazy vibratos. And some of them put WAY to much. Brett Barrett for instance...i can't stand his voice. lol.
So just keep working on singing and you'll be fine =]
hah. thanks. i must say, i'm a pretty good belter though.
i think.

I definitely hear vibrato forming on some of your most recent video. . .my suggestion (take it with a grain of salt, though. . .I'm still new to this stuff too) would be to do some vowel work. . .A key to producing vibrato is relaxing which naturally happens on correct vowel formations. . .That being said, I'd like to compliment you on your "e"'s. . .I see a lot of people get really tense on them.
thanks. i like compliments. =]
Not a problem, but look at it both ways. . .take it as a compliment, but get your other vowels like that. . .watching the video the vibrato seems clearest on the words like "me". . .keep singing.
yep. i got that. eh. i don't have any musical things coming up that i am in until fall. what will i do with myself? the sadness.
Listen to a lot of music. . .always helps with anything.
true. but preforming is my drug of choice.
Well. . .listen to a ton of music, find something you really like, mooch off of someone who has the script/score, and perform it. . .that's what I do. . .or find a nearby theater and do another show.
