Posted: 12/16/05 at 5:44pmYes he's been in his fair share of crap, but, overall, I can't help but be amazed by his incredible acting in the good movies.. I mean, he gave a far better performance in The Nutty Professor than the material really deserved. And Bowfinger....wow....that is one of the best comic performances of the 90s.

Uhhh. . . .
No.

Posted: 12/16/05 at 5:46pmNo. I think he's a one trick pony whose trick wasn't that good in the first place.

Posted: 12/16/05 at 6:02pmI'm afraid I have to agree. He is a highly OVERRATED performer. He was funny in some SNL skits but as far as I can see those are his only real claims to fame.

Do you mean anyone other than Eddie Murphy?
Although, I guess you could say he's underrated as an actor. I don't think he acts really. He's a comedian that does movies.

Posted: 12/16/05 at 9:36pmFor a long time he was desperate to make and star in the late great August Wilson's FENCES, with James Earl Jones. Never happened. Anyone else remember that? Too bad.

OK OK, I'll admit I've enjoyed his work in the past.
Is he a great, versatile multidimensional actor capable of all things drama and comedy? Probably not.
But, is he possibly a far greater talent than we've mostly seen thus far? Probably.
Great comedic acting is far more technically demanding oftentimes than great dramatic acting, though many don't view it that way. The great comedic actors make it look easy, when it is anything but.
As goofy and sophomoric as the Nutty Professor films are, for example, Murphy's performance in them is in many ways remarkable. Dismiss him if you like, but he's actually quite a gifted character actor when given half a chance.

Posted: 12/17/05 at 9:59amJust can't see it, Margo. He seems entirely one dimensional to me. I've never seen him play more than one character, every time. Of course, he's pretty much turned me off so I can't say I've seen a whole lot of his work lately. Maybe he learned how to act?

I haven't seen an "Eddie Murphy Movie" in years. He does crappy material.
That said,I think he deserves a lot of the credit for making "SHREK" a hit. His voice performance was vital to the success of the movie.

WHAT?
Beverly Hills Cop
Coming to America
SNL
Those are GREAT, FUNNY movies and if anyone else was in those roles, I don't think it would have been nearly as much of a success.

Posted: 12/25/06 at 10:33pmI've walked out of Dreamgirls twice now with his performance being maybe my favorite in the film. He is wonderful, and nails Early all the way through his decline, not just at the beggining when he's fine.

Posted: 12/25/06 at 10:43pmI would also, like to see peoples opinions now that the movie is out. I always thought Murphy was funny, but I never considered him an actor until this evening.

Eddie Murphy is a very funny performer who has been cast in a nuber of terrible films (Haunted Mansion, anybody?) ... his work in Beverly Hills Cop and Trading Places is awesome; but he has never had a movie to exercise his comedic talents since.
He's been needing to fire his agent for like the past decade. From what I hear, though, yeah: he is awesome in Dreamgirls.
