Absolutely Namo. And it would not matter if he shifted to the right of Jim DeMint- The Republican party has killed bills THEY wrote because Obama championed them. They will not work with this president. At all.

Yes and all these things you say are supposed to imply what? That it's impossible for two things to be true? That we want Obama to do the right thing and we undertand how obstructionist Republicans make that harder for him AND we're angry about the obvious missteps he's made on gay issues and the seeming indifference he now has about a community he courted?

He didn't court me, Hillary did. I got stuck with him.
He's doing exactly what I expected from him -- NOTHING.

No, lots of things can be true. It's been hard and it'll probably get harder, especially if the right is fired up and turn out in record numbers and the left sits home and pouts. You can certainly be pissed about all that and more. But being pissed doesn't change the facts that the votes aren't there to repeal DADT right now- as evidenced by the fact it was introduced and blocked. Reid can re-introduce the measure in the lame duck session. I have no idea what good he thinks that will do but hey, maybe he's got a rabbit up his sleeve.

I am confident DADT will fall- right now, I'd put my money on a supreme court take down. But Politics is cyclical. And it moves fast- we went from unstoppable democratic majority to deadlock in a matter of weeks and if the media is to believed, we stand on the edge of a conservative renaissance now, only two years after that same media proclaimed the republican party dead.

And the end of DADT will be a VERY good thing- I think any sane person agrees with that. It's a horrible law and needs to go.

Having come of age at a time when we were grateful for crumbs, my definition of "court" is broad enough to include tacking a few rainbow stripes on a separate but equal presidential campaign fundraising webpage.

And I know kids are supposed to be off-limits and all, but when that Malia comes out to her ex-President daddy and he says, "I wish I had done more for the gay community," it will be too late. As usual.

It didn't seem to do much to Dick Cheney.

According to Pam's Hot Blend, the White House Counsel (who's that?) is having an off-the-record meeting today with a few gay leaders to discuss DADT and the lame-duck session.

Allison Herwitt and Joe Solmonese of the Human Rights Campaign;
Shane Larson of the Stonewall Democrats;
Winnie Stachelberg of the Center for American Progress;
Aubrey Sarvis of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network;
R. Clarke Cooper of the Log Cabin Republicans;
Alex Nicholson and Jarrod Chlapowski of Servicemembers United;
Nathaniel Frank, DADT expert formerly of the Palm Center;
Jim Kessler of the Third Way

According to Kerry Eleveld of the Advocate, attendees were told "there can be no discussion of current court cases or legal strategy or Counsel's Office will end the meeting."

Which leaves: "How about this unseasonably warm weather?"

This is starting to put me in mind of the reminiscences about JFK, in Caroline, or Change. The characters referred to him as "our almost-friend."

John Aravosis of AmericaBlog has this to say about that:

"Nothing better illustrates the hubris the White House brings to its relations with its allies. Our civil rights representatives are invited to a key meeting on DADT, as part of the overall White House "'offensive' to win back the base before the elections, and the White House outright threatens our leaders. Perhaps it's time our leaders started threatening the White House."

"Perhaps it's time our leaders started threatening the White House."

Wouldn't work. Obama doesn't give a sh*t. And there's that annoying thing about the other side being even worse. They know we've got nobody to vote for, unless some Dem candidate comes along who'll make us all the promises that Obama made...

"If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about the answers." Thomas Pynchon, GRAVITY'S RAINBOW "Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away." Philip K. Dick My blog: http://www.roscoewrites.blogspot.com/

He does, however give a s*** about things like constitutionality, legal remedies that will hold up to challenges and pesky details like that.

""Some of the participants in the meeting are involved in active litigation against the government on the issue of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, so it wouldn't be appropriate to discuss that litigation," said the administration official "This is standard procedure for any meeting where that would be the case."

"You could add further that our lawyers can't have contact with represented parties without their counsel being present.""

Then here's an idea, and I can't believe he didn't think of it because he's so smart: DON'T HAVE THE MEETING.

By the same token (pun chosen deliberately): Your DOJ is using the most homophobic arguments possible to uphold DADT? DON'T RECORD AN IT GETS BETTER VIDEO.

The meeting was to discuss legislative options.

Joe--do you understand that the phrase "...or Counsel's Office will end the meeting..." is antagonistic and insulting?

As one of the posters at JoeMyGod said:

I was a manager in a federal agency and attended many meetings with members of the public regarding issues that were the subject of litigation. If I had sent an email like this, I would have been subjected to disciplinary action.

The email wording and tone are fairly outrageous.

Gosh compared to the sh*t flung at me for having a different outlook, I think "Counsel's Office will end the meeting" sounds like an invitation to tea.

Victim card! How many? Smoking or non?

Seriously Joe, if you hadn't been so rabinnical and/or Clintonian in your dissection of just who might possibly deserve to be angry about DADT even though it's their own damn fault for being gay and having the temerity to enter the military when they could have chosen an unlimited number of other employment options regardless of their socio-economic class or their race/ethnicity I wouldn't have tried so damn hard to get you to say, "You know what, I can see how people can feel pissed off about this."

Instead, you seem to want to gloss over it the way a spousal abuse survivor does when they go back to their perpetrator.

Sure, the end choice may be having to vote for people you need to wear a clothespin on your nose in order to do so, but PLEASE don't stake a claim that the anger isn't justified.

And then don't whine when people try to convince you, which is what you criticism was earlier in the thread.

Oh please. Feel free to say awful stuff- I can certainly take it. I was (foolishly) attempting to lighten the debate (and maybe poke a bit of fun at PalJoey who stood up so tall and flung down the dreaded phrase "Counsel's Office will end the meeting" as if it was "You are worse than HITLER!")

And I am sorry if I somehow lead you to believe people shouldn't or can't be angry about DADT- I thought when I said "I can see how people screwed by the military would be angry- to be bounced out of the service because of who you sleep with is awful- to have to hide your true orientation to serve, awful" might have let you know that I understand the rage. Or maybe when I talked about the young friend who I've tried desperately to dissuade from enlisting- I'm worried sick about the kid, so it's not just a matter of "Rabbinical" study to me.

And I try my best to ALWAYS welcome others opinions and do indeed enjoy hearing other viewpoints.

And that's what I meant by your rabinical (spelled right this time) demarcation of who might possibly have a right to be angry, the way you specified how people screwed by the military might be.

That does imply that others, such as those of us with military partners, as well as progressive observers who don't trust what Obama is doing, do not.

You are right and I certainly did not mean to say that they could or should not be angry. That was not my intention.

I will, however, fight to the death my right to spell it "Rabbinical".

Someones trying to make the gays like the democrats again. Funny coincidence that this and his bullying initiative come the day after the news we might sway the election.

After reading these posts, I'm reminded of an old say, "Don't cut off your nose to spite your face."

Anger has its place, but letting anger control you gets you nowhere.

Go ahead, don't vote! Go ahead, make sure the GOP controls both houses of Congress. Then when you complain, I'll going to put my fingers in my ears and stop listening.

Yep, the meme that gays are to blame is already taking shape.

Blah blah blah nose face blah blah

Because so much has been accomplished with these Democrats in office?
