That was simply SPECTACULAR! And the ending was brilliant.
I've always admired Liberace, but he has now officially reached idol status for me.
It's really sad that such a wonderful film can't be nominated for academy awards.

Saw it again tonight at a viewing party. Interesting to hear a straight woman's reaction to the anal scene.
I don't know how that film could make anyone admire Liberace more.

I couldn't believe that was Debbie Reynolds playing Liberace's Mom.
Great makeup work all around.
Rob Lowe- awesome
great performances
I couldn't buy Matt Damon as a 17 year old when he first met Liberace.
Very sad film. All around.
emmys emmys emmys for sure.
Rather than admire him, that lousy film made me see what a lousy queen Liberace was.
Agreed Jane. It was a pretty damning portrayal.

I don't believe it was Liberace's fault (if all of it were true)...
He was living in the wrong times. He hated himself for being gay obviously.
Such a sad sad life. on the inside.
What wasn't his fault? I'm not sure what you mean, taboo.
I get that Taboo. But I don't think this film made any attempt to portray him as sympathetic.
A sad coda

In terms of his behavior.... and the monster he became...
Oh, ok. We disagree then. If you're a lousy queen it's your fault no matter what time it is. But of course we must realize this was the point of view of thorsen.

hmmm.. it was Thornton's view. So who knows what the real story is.
If you are a lousy person- of course you're a lousy person. I just think that maybe,.... just maybe.... Liberace was miserable with catholic guilt. and had no way out of it.

For all of his fabulousness!!
Well he was a pretty sad character. The entire film had a sad tone to it.
As a kid who grew up in the foster care system I'm sure Scott Thorsen was dealing with a lot of the same issues. Minus the millions of dollars.

But can we please discuss Matt Damon coming out of pools and jacuzzi's?
I'm retracting this because it was unnecessarily mean. Updated On: 5/27/13 at 11:17 AM
I found it to be a more sympathetic portrayal than I was expecting. I felt for both men in different ways and for different reasons. And both Douglas and Damon deserve every award they pick-up. They really went for it and gave fearless and stellar performances. Bravo!
I'm gonna guess they'll both be competing against each other for the big awards, right?
They're both leading roles.
I loved the film and thought they were both stellar. The one thing however the film did not achieve ( in my opinion) is to convey Liberaces appeal and popularity among older women. That one little scene where they ask if he was their son kind of hinted at it. I don't think that anyone not familiar with Liberace would understand just how popular he was among women past their prime. They idolized him. One thing I did take away from it.. so sad to see yet once again religion being the center of so much sadness .
I'm watching this now. Douglas and Damon are so brave for having taken on these roles. I've never been a fan of Liberace, his persona, music, schtick were never my "cup of tea".
What sad, self-hating, pathetic men they both were.
Fascinating film, though.
Just finished watching it. Really well-done, and of course Damon and Douglas are both incredible. Funny, disturbing, appropriately kitschy, but with genuine pathos.
If you walk away from this feeling that Liberace is admirable for the way he conducted his life, well... I don't know. Admire his abilities. His lifestyle was nothing to be admired.
The writing was a problem. It wasn't good, but it wasn't bad enough to be good. they should have gone all the way and made it campy. But for me it wasn't here nor there.
I'm glad they didn't make it campy. It was the life story of two people, two gay people and I am glad the filmmakers took it seriously and didn't make it into some sort of big camp joke.
IMO I had no problem with the writing. I thought every aspect of the film was top notch and way above average the schlock that clogs the airwaves nowadays.
I hope many awards are heaped on it.
I'm not a fan of Liberace but I can't deny that he was a famous and albeit controversial figure in the entertainment industry. As a gay man I feel that his story, warts and all needed to be told without being glossed over.
I need to watch it again...and will.
