LINK- Your "You Oughta Know." I will admit I love the song, and I was a bit worried that you wouldn't make it "edgy" enough. Honestly I have not been fond of your previous work. But you really seemed to pull it off. I really enjoyed the whole thing. Most importantly I was feeling it. There was some anger, resentment, and more than a bit of sass, maybe not quite as much as I would have liked, but it was there. I applaud you for finally breaking free a bit. Kick it up again next week.

Good point, sp78. I do appreciate that Link's trying to break out of his boy band mold, first with country and then this. He's shown more range than many other contestants so far.

WesternSky: Your voice + that song= Me in heaven. Great stuff, well delivered, altogether top notch. I have nothing worthwhile to say, it was fabulous! Now if you can do "Ballad of Thin Man" so I can have a matching set that would be fabulous.

Nicely done, WesternSky. One of the best songs of the round so far. I love your voice, you know that. And you've controlled your vibrato so it doesn't sound like you were on Amtrak while you were recording.

I don't know what Tiff is talking about, spidey, you are the only contestant this week who had NO pitch issues. Just absolutely brilliant, my man! Perfect song for your voice, and you were technically perfect while keeping the right level of emotion.

Spidey- Once again a MUCH IMPROVED performance! Very well delivered song, perfect for your voice. It sounded like you were really into it, and that made the entire track 100 times better. I am very happy that you were still around so you could "show us what you have."

WesternSky2: I really enjoyed that performance. Your vocals were a bit soft, but I am willing to chalk that up to the angry dorm mates. I’ve always enjoyed that song and you didn’t disappoint me at all. Some of the beltier parts of the song had similar diction and tone to Jewel which from me is a compliment. It had the feel of an unplugged or intimate setting performance and I really dug that. Your voice is really strong and I liked this better than last week.

Spidey: First off, I respect that you did the song in the original key. Very nice. You started off very strong before getting a little shaky on some of the middle part and then when the song required a little bit more of a belt you seemed to be reaching the top of your range which caused things to go a bit flat. That being said, I know you are ill and it was a nice rendition. Overall I would say it was tons better than last week, for me.

Kitzarina: I love your voice, but this wasn’t a great song choice for you. I am not a huge fan of the song anyway, but I don’t think this song showed you off at all. You have a great voice that might have been better served picking something that was more in your comfort range. I like your voice most when you are singing in your lower register and you have that smoky sound. For next week, I’m holding out hope that you do some Fiona because I think that would be perfect for your voice range. I really didn’t care for this one this week, but I think you’ve been good enough in past weeks that you’ll get another chance.

JRB: Well, everyone knows I was hoping that someone would do this song and I am thrilled that you did! You had fun, you made it your own and most importantly you didn’t try and do too much with it. You just sang it well, camped it up a bit and I really enjoyed it. I really look forward to hearing you sing a “valentines” song next week.

Ebonic_singer: Everyone at this stage of the game has a nice voice. I was really expecting you to bring it this week after being on the ropes last week. Unfortunately, I think this song was just a little too big for you. There were times where it seemed like you weren’t in time with the music, there were some bum notes here and there that I think is a result of a little too much riffing. I know this is a Mariah song and riffing is there, but it seemed that the riff often times led to you being off key. You finished the song on a very nice note, but all in all it was just okay for me.

Allie: I am a fan of yours. I like your voice. It has a sweet yet mature quality to it. I do wish you’d pick something that shows a little more power, but I know that you weren’t feeling well this week and it was creating some vocal problems as well. It is apparent that you didn’t have your full voice this week which may hurt you since you really needed something bigger. You have a very pleasant voice and I am hoping that you get a chance to come back next week and bring something a bit bigger.

Link: It's hard because that is almost a sacred song in my mind. I really like the fact that you made it your own and didn't try to do the same vocal things that Alanis did. It was miles better than last week for me and if this is the “pop thing” that everyone has been complaining about, I'd say stick with it. The pop thing works a lot better in your voice and this was a much more enjoyable performance.

I think Spidey's the only contestant so far who's consistently improved each week. I'll re-listen regarding the minor pitch problems - by Spidey's own admission, they're there.

yes--pitch has been a big problem for contestants this competition--the recording devices are brutal in their honesty. I bet you are glad to not have to deal with that anymore, rath!

Alright, I'll be back with my scores in a moment. Sorry my critiques are lacking this week. I'm totally out of it and avec une migraine, so this is the best you'll be getting out of me.

Again, Round 5 theme is in the first post - love songs, anti-love songs, and songs celebrating singlehood. (I'd be more partial to the latter two, but those people yearning for torch songs - here's your chance!)

I don't know if there's any point to have a song submission deadline since almost everyone changed their mind this week at least once, but I would like to know ASAP so I can at least have a tentative song list in the first post by the end of the weekend. Song submission deadline will be Wednesday night/Thursday morning again, with a show on Thursday, Feb. 23.

Voting tonight will open in 5 minutes - 7:30pmEST - to my PM box. TWO CONTESTANTS PER VOTE, PLEASE (if you don't want to choose two, then vote for one contestant twice) AND PUT THE NAMES IN THE SUBJECT TITLE!

1. you weren't perfection

2. you had to drop out

First of all, pitchy isn't a word. Secondly, I didn't drop out because I was afraid of losing, and you know it. You should be very happy that I'm gone, and not get bitchy - that's not good for votes.

And it's quite disingenous of you to call someone "honey" as you're trying to stick it to them.

I have the right to come on this thread and critique just like every other BWW member, no?
