Ok, so my first reaction was "awesome, you go kid!".

But when I watched the video and I realized how nervous and shy the child was trying to say his line correctly I thought that maybe if the parents had something to say to Bachman they should have said it themselves.

I guess they felt coming from the mouth of a babe it would have more impact.

Agree with the sentiment, but not the method.

Either way, she's toast. And her eyes still freak me the f*** out.

This is only marginally less offensive than tea partiers or others using their kids. If the woman wanted to confront Bachmann, she should have had the courage to do so herself.

Comments by the person who shot the video indicate it was the boy's idea and that his mother simply encouraged him because he's shy. (I don't know what relationship the cameraperson his, if any, to this family.) At this point, there seems to be some debate over whether that's the truth or whether he was prompted outright. I first watched the video from the former perspective, and found it believable and sad and Bachmann's reaction genuinely disgusting. I wonder how the road to find the truth of what happened here will meander.

If he was put up to it then I think its terrible.
However if he was like "Mom I want to say this." And got shy and the mom simply helped him then I find it pretty cool.
Either way, that dumb bitch across the table had no idea what to do so she basically shooed him away. I hate her. Alot. I usually dont use the h word but she deserves all the hate that is comin to her.

As a gay parent..I'm really not comfortable with this.

Even if that eight-year-old kid wanted to do it, even if confronting Michele Bachmann was the kid's idea, even if the kid was excited about being in a YouTube video... this just isn't cool.

The enemies of LGBT equality use small children as props in their misleading commercials and at their hate rallies all the time. It's a credit to our side that this sort of thing—a gay parent pushing a child into the face of a hater like Bachmann—is so rare that this video shocks the conscience.

We shouldn't use our kids like this. Even if one of our kids wants to be used like this—even if our kid is a precocious little eight-year-old asskicker who want nothing more than to get all up in Michele Bachmann's crazy face (and that's not how this kid comes across)—we need to exercise sound parental judgment and tell our kids, "No, honey, not now. Maybe later."

I don't understand the logic of and disagree with his last paragraph pretty vehemently. He doesn't make an argument for that idea, and I think he needs to.

I think his point is that we should take the high road and make our feelings known in constructive ways.

Clearly, making a scene at a book signing isn't going to change anything. It just makes the people look foolish.

Remember the dude who "glitter bombed" Gingrich awhile back? Total waste.

Okay. And that goes for 8-year-olds and all non-8-year-olds, right? I'm just trying to make sense of it because I don't recall him speaking out about other frequent "gotcha"-type demonstrations/confrontations. But I don't really follow him, so I don't know.

Sadam Hussein used to use children in this manner. He would build ammunition plants next to daycares. Then when children were hurt in bombing the ammunition plant, he would publicize that children were being bombed. It's nice to know the gay community has taken a page from his playbook.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I can't believe I'm going to do this, but I'm actually going to defend Crazy Eyes here.

In this situation, what else would you want her to do? She was very nice to this kid, the people at the event even seemed very nice to let the person film it (I've been at many an event for people not even close to being as "famous" as she is where they freak out at the sight of someone filming) and she took time to talk to the kid. After he was forced (and anyone who spends time around kids knows 100% that he was forced, coaxed whatever) to say that, what the hell else could she do but say "Ok, bye bye" to him? She certainly wasn't going to start a political discussion with a kid who obviously probably had no real idea what he saying to her. The whole thing is just stupid and the fact it's getting so much attention is just stupider.

I wouldn't really say you're "defending" her, Jordan. I don't disagree with you. I didn't expect any particular reaction. It's appropriate to her, her personality, and her position. If you took out your c0ck and slapped my grandmother in the face with it, she'd probably babble for a little bit and leave the room. That would be an appropriate reaction, but I wouldn't enjoy it any less.

Goth, your SAT scores must have sucked, considering such a large portion of the verbal section is analogies.

And yeah, this was a bit tacky of the mom (I'm buying that this was some sort of spontaneous statement that came to the kid), but just look at some of the pro-prop 8 ads if you want to see shameless use of children to make political points.

I only saw one woman and her son. Was there a community standing behind her off camera? I seem to see the representation of the "gay community" present here pretty against what seems to be happening on the video.
