How in the world is this an "important" gay movie that the "Community" needs to support? It's a typical hollywood film that shows (again) that being gay means a lifetime in the closet, plagued by violence and heartbreak. Whoever pointed out that "Making Love" showed a more progressive story 25 years ago hit it right on the head. This is nothing more than more propaganda telling people to stay in the closet, get trapped in loveless marriages and ruin as many lives as you can because that is all homos can do, anywhere, anytime.
And, incidentally, isn't it curious that this "Groundbreaking gay film" that is getting showered with awards doesn't seem to involve an openly gay participant.
for you, Joe. Enjoy:

Joe -- I don't think this film says "this is how it's always going to be" for gay romance. First off, it's set in the (near) past... and in (arguably) the most conservative region of our country.
Did "Schindler's List" show us how "it's always going to be" for Jews? I'm not following that reasoning.
"Brokeback" is getting people talking now... about how lives can be ruined by intolerance and guilt. The "hope" comes not from the film itself, but in knowing that people can change their attitudes and opinions about this kind of relationship.

Perhaps not, but as a non-Jew, I can't be sure how all the Jews out there were told to receive it or how they should think about it, even if they didn't care for it. I'm afraid I just don't see the importance of Brokeback Mountain despite hearing virtually nothing but how important it is.
The movie was dull, the subject matter was grim and as gay films go, Beautiful Thing told the story of doomed gay love much better quite a while ago.
I think best12's allusion to SL is EXACTLY right on. And, yes, the film was of political value in a world where people think the Holocaust was fake.
I rate the film on 3 levels, and I hope the rest of you can to:
1. As I feel about it as a gay man--the personal stuff that is probably unfair to place on the film's shoulders
2. As how I rate the film strictly artistically
3. As I feel the film fits into the politically landscape
And please do NOT invalidate that opinion. Thank you.
come on, wouldn't it be more fun to play like:
Alec Baldwin and Randy Quaid in: Bearback Mountain
My Boss ( A straight older woman) told me just this morning she really wants to go see "Bareback Mountian". I fell on the floor laughing. She didn't quite get it. Then I explained to her what Bareback meant and it got quite a laugh out of her too.

Is no one going to take the extra step and call it Mounting?

Make it Alec Baldwin and James Gandolfini and I'm in.
*sigh*
Sorry, kringas. I couldn't think of another hollywood bear and so I went with one already in the real film.

Joe... I enjoy your posts and agree with much of what you have to say, but you really are off the mark here. If anything, the intention, message, and effect of the movie is the exact opposite.
And best12... your analogy to Schindler's List (or any other film chronicling a negative event or period in history, for that matter) is right on the money. Sometimes, taking a look back, whether it be a century, decade, year, or day, helps us to move forward.
This lil cub thinks Alec Baldwin and James Gandolfini would be pretty woofy!! Grrr!
In your opinion. I think the film is an overrated bore. It will win the Oscar for best picture and best director and Hollywood will congratulate itself and the Fox News Channel and closeted Matt Drudge will make sarcastic remarks.
This film, Rent, and the 'revival' of Sweeney Todd are the three overrated prods of 2005.

Bareback Mountain, Rent, and Sweeney Todd??? LOL!!!!!!!! You must be on the pipe! And how the hell is RENT overrated? It received predominately negative reviews and was all but dismissed by most critics (and audiences).

A fictional short story written by a straight female senior citizen does not even come close to being put in the same category as the source material for Schindler's List.

I couldn't tell if that was sarcasm or not.
And JoeKv, love you usually but those remarks are silly. God forbid people tell gay stories that don't end happily -- let's ban those permanently and have our homos perpetually walking into the sunset holding hands.
I think we're imposing politics onto a film that doesn't really have any (other than telling a story dealing the cultural climate of Wyoming, but again, it's a period piece). I think that its characters and setting are too specific and carefully-drawn for anyone to make sweeping assumptions on all gay life.
I base my opinion on the 9,671 postings on this site about how wonderful are these prods.
It's 2006, folks. A new year.
Let's all f**kin' lighten up and appreciate each other's remarks and opinions in a calm manner, OK?
This is only show biz, not real life. You think the families of the dead miners care about BROKEBACK or BAREBACK MOUNTAIN?
Peace.

A film like Schindler's List is recounting not only true events, but a depiction of what is inarguably one of the greatest atrocities of the 20th century.
Brokeback is a work of fiction and should therefore be judged on different merits.
Edit: What SOMMS said. But I really was typing this at the same time.
I don't think the SCHINDLER'S LIST analogy is perfect, either, so here's another one: to say BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN represents the path of all gay men is to suggest that all Polish teenage boys are gonna get shot in the street if they fool around with Puerto Rican girls.

More importantly though, were Polish boys and Puerto Rican girls being told they needed to treat the movie as a sacred cow, even if they thought it was BS?
No, the stories are not equal. The horrors aren't even close to equal. But as films that represent the issues of prejudice, they are worthy in comparison.
I'm certainly not treating this film as a sacred cow. But inversely, I think a lot of the negativity and backlash is unwarranted.
But when have all gays and lesbians fully supported anything approaching a mainstream film, or a movie aspiring to branch out of a queer niche? Everything becomes viciously bipartisan. Even when HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH came out, people were lambasting it for the portrayal of a transvestite who undergoes a sex change to get out of East Germany.
