Yay for 2-Out Rallies!!! I tend to find Edgar Reneria a rather frustrating individual, but he's really come through big time this afternoon! 2-2 w/ all 5 of our RBI!!!

P.S. Who the hell is Roberto Petagine?!?!? And more importantly, why is he batting clean up?? I know Manny had his run in w/ Renteria last night, and Olerud is on the DL, but seriously, wtf?

Sorry to hear that, brdlwyr...The Sox are trying to loose, I swear. An 8 run inning against Kansas City should be enough to get you through the game, clear sailing. Alas, Clement had a pretty rough start (maybe a little off kilter after getting beaned on his last outing...understandably)...10-8 going into the 8th. C'mon boys!

Sheff apparently gave a big interview with a magazine (can't remember which one) accusing the team of having no leader/heart since he has been there. It sounded a little like something relatively benign that the radio talk people built up. At least that seems to be his objection to it. I think he may have also been qouted as saying he was the only person in the Yankee lineup that other teams fear. Eh, I'm sure it will pass if the Yanks start winning.
Braves lost 11-3, I just don't know if we can handle the Cards in any type of series.

Hey, I'm with Sheff on the deification of Jeter, who's a great, Hall of Fame player but not even the best shortstop of his generation. That said, Sheff's an asshole who needs to remember he's part of one of the most productive lineups in baseball. Giambi's right up there with him in production now.

Plum, I agree about Shef being an as$hole and how he needs to just be a part of the team where others have started to contribute.
I'm not sure about Jeter, I agree except I would even question the notion that he is an automatic hall of famer, his major productive years were in such a ridiculously inflated era that I think without the "Jeter is a God" sports world he would be a borderline player (unless he has about 5 more years of the same kind of production, winds up with 3000 hits and all of that.)

The Yanks beat the White Sox in a really solidly played game. I'm proud of them today. Oh, and in case the past few years haven't made this abundantly clear, Mariano Rivera is a god. He looked like a high schooler pitching to Little Leaguers.

Plum Actually I am one of the ones saying this entire era is suspect and should be considered almost seperately like the pre-1900 and dead ball era. I think that Jeter's shortstop production is higher than the other eras, but not much higher than those who playing now, and because of that Jeter moves down the list. Some pitchers from the 60's were punished by the era only so many got in, a pitcher with a 3.50 career ERA in that era would find the hall hard to reach, just as all the .275 450 HR guys now will find it hard.
Jeter is most likely a hall of fame player, but a borderline one (his defense has been decent but not exceptional, his offense high for a shortstop, but also for the era even when compared to shortstops not exceptional)

I have one word for you, and that word is "postseason." Jeter's in, easily, whether you choose to believe it's based on merit or just on the fact that it's baseball writers who do the voting. :)
Anyway, yeah, we had a high-offense era which will be difficult to compare with other eras. But that's happened throughout baseball history with changes like the switch to the live ball around 1920 and the lowering of the mound in 1969. Fact is, we also have a remarkable generation of shortstops right now, and it's not just an offensive era thing- they're producing, as hitters relative to their contemporaries in other positions, at historical levels.
As it stands, I think A-Rod and Jeter are getting in, though maybe not as shortstops, with Nomar joining them if he ever stops with the disastrous injuries. Tejada still has some catching up to do.
Funny how an era of unbridled offense produced 4 of the best pitchers of all time, too. We're kind of short on great third basemen, though.

Right, Jeter's only a sure case in a few more years. But since around 92% of writers would probably lick his toes if he asked them to, he could get in right now. :)

I did not even think about Pedro at all! Wow, the Koufax precedent is really perfect their numbers are almost identical. (actually Pedro's are slightly better in every category and that era thing is ridiculus he has 2.72 ERA when the league was 4.53 Koufax 2.76 to 3.63)

*blush* Aw, thanks. And yes, baseball-reference is an amazing resource. Especially because I have a tendency to transpose numbers when I try to remember them. I was actually looking at the shortstops' career OPS+ stats when I made my post. Do you post on Baseball Primer? Because the people there are really smart. There's a lot of in-jokes and stuff, but the level of statistical knowledge and thinking is as high as it gets on the Internet- one of their ex-contributors works for the Red Sox now.

I love that level you can get with baseball, it is what made me start paying attention in the first place. How exciting!
I'm still very weary of the internet for information generally, I was one of those nerdy kids who carried around the Encyclopedia of Baseball, with my own apendix for the current season back in the day.

Oh, I was in Internet baseball fan almost as soon as I discovered I could be one. I think I have 2 friends who care about baseball at all, and neither is much for stats or following the game closely. Without the 'net, I'd have had no one to talk to. The same is sort of true for theater, too, sadly.
