Even better, DG, the older brother was named Bubba.

Yeah, so I WAS a beauty pageant kid. I actually won a lot. My mom wasn't too bad but when I was like 7 she asked me if I wanted to do them anymore. When I said no, she never pushed it. Hell, that was 23 years ago. It wasn't like it is now. We still looked like kids. We did wear the flippers, which were creepy. Part of me wishes she would have pushed it. Maybe I would have been more self aware and wouldn't let my ass get to quite the size it is now. heh
Yeah, baby... check this shiz out...
I think I was 3, so it would have been 1980.
Swan Brooner-see how happy she is?
And for talent... I twirled a baton.
Yeah, thighs were already gettin' chunky. And damn, I look like I needed a nap.
orangeskittles, i haven't seen that movie since it was first on HBO! thanks for the link :)

In that first picture you look like a cabbage patch kid!
I still do.
I've mentioned before that I judged a few of these things back in the early 90s, and when I watch these shows now, I can't believe how much has changed. Yes, we had the competitive, pushy mothers, but nothing like the ones they show in these documentaries. Also, the makeup and hair they put on these kids now? So gross. That stuff would be gross on an adult!

JG2, you still looked like a child (and thankfully you had a mother who was looking out for you). Today these girls are so sexualized. It's frightening.
Is that you in your av, JG2?
Was Showbiz Moms and Dads on VH1? 'Cause I think I've seen that one.
And what are flippers?

I wish it was me in my avatar. It's Sara Ramirez. We're engaged, she just doesn't know it.
LOL, ok, I totally understand!
You do realize, JG2, that we all picture you as Sara.
Okay, I do.
Are you busy later?
Jeez, Rath! On the next train to Jersey?
Flippers are the "dentures" I think.
I wish. I am not nearly as cute. I clean up okay.

I was in a beauty pageant once when I was three.
Being the smart-a** I was, that was my last pageant.
During the interview part, they asked all us ankle-biters
what our favorite TV show was.
I replied "The Simpsons" in a dead-on impression of Bart Simpson.
My mother stood up and clapped, and we pretty much had to run for our lives after because these crazy women went insane over us.
I look more like Sara's fat Irish cousin.
Flippers are the little teeth like plate things that fit over your own randomly coming in teeth to make them look like caps.
Ah, okay.
You're right, blueroses. I remember that show now. VH1 ran some one-shot special in a similar vein.
Little Beauties: Ultimate Kiddie Queen Showdown.
Yup. Saw that one too.
I too did pageants as a kid. It was my choice. I brought the little pamphlet home and told my mom I wanted to do it. I was 8 for my first one. That was around 85 I think. I did one, maybe two a year until I was 14. I quit then also by my choice. I had so much going on that I didn't want to do them any more. LOL my talent for my first one was reciting a poem. I thought it was a great idea. (it wasn't) After that I danced for them.
I do remember when it started getting scary though. There was a mother that expected her 10 year old daughter to choreograph and perform her baton routine. The girl clearly didn't want to be in the pageant but her mom was insistent.
I remember that documentary about Swan Brooner. Her mother was such a hag. Plus she had a boyfriend that was about a million years old.
I think I was in a fashion show-beauty pageant when I was two or three. I have been told I cried, ran off the stage, and forfeited.
