I guess most use "chick flick" for woman or women-driven movies that are heavy on the romance.
With that definition, my top ten might be:
Now, Voyager (the grand dame of "women's pictures"
Persuasion (best Jane Austen movie ever)
Sense and Sensibility (second best Jane Austen movie ever)
Funny Girl (the diva worshiping big musical)
Eight Women (the diva worshiping chamber musical)
Baby Boom (best Keaton chick flick)
The Story of Adele H. (Adjani obsessed)
The Earrings of Madame de... (Darrieux torn between Boyer and De Sica in one of the screen's most lavish and smartest romances)

A chick flick is a movie made primarily for a female audience. So Kill Bill, for instance, is not a chick flick.

The Exorcist, A chick flick? Don't make me laugh. it's a classic horror film pure and simple. An example of a chick flick would be something along the lines of Dirty Dancing. Or any movie adaptation of a Nicholas Spark's novels.

The term "chick flick" is mainly used as a pejorative - reserved for trashy schmaltz which supposedly all feeble-brained womenfolk must adore, so I don't see why suggesting that it could be misogynist would merit an eyeroll.

I don't see it as misogynistic. There are definite "guy movies" as well, we just don't have a clever term for them because there's no word for "movie" that rhymes with "dude," or whatever.

That said, I don't mean to be all "sjw" or "snowflake" or "virtue signal" about it, or to rain on a fun thread about movies. I'm just talking is all.
There is such a broad range of movies listed in this thread, and given the loose definition, who can pick ten favorites?
I guess Steel Magnolias, 9 To 5, Pretty Woman would be three.

There's no misogyny in simply identifying a movie as a "chick flick," i.e. one that's markedly meant to appeal to women and or is marketed to a primarily female audience.
There is a great deal of misogyny in mocking a movie solely because it is markedly meant to appeal to women.
As an obvious admirer of such films, South Florida was clearly not mocking them because they are meant to appeal to women.

I appreciate your posts Jay. They're not SJW or virtue signal or any other pejorative used to make fun of people who want to look at little deeper at commonly accepted truisms. I mean, if THIS week isn't the week to talk about the way modern culture devalues women, I don't know what is. I found your Marian Keyes post enlightening.

I've spent all morning thinking about this question: what measure is a "chick flick?" My immediate thought is this: a women's interest film, or a film that appeals primarily to women, may not necessarily be a chick flick. There's an element of crassness, of pandering, that goes into chick flicks or chick lit.
Someone previously stated that "chick flick" seems dismissive, as if it's saying "all those dumb women are all alike, and they like that garbage." The way I see it, a chick flick is something MADE from that perspective. "If we do this, and that, and have women doing THIS in the commercial, all those dumb broads will come see the film." It's why Legally Blonde 2 feels like a chick flick even when the first one doesn't necessarily do so- the pandering feeling.

I mean there are some important points here and Jay, thank you for your post above.
I am am conflicted because I can’t help but feel sometimes that the modern SJW movement goes against everything modern psychology suggests to do when dealing with negative emotions. Our modern models do suggest that certain words, ideas or behaviours (such as cultural Halloween costumes) might cause emotional dress if the person interpreting these signals holds ideas about what they mean (in today’s oppression olympics probably thoughts around it being oppressive, dehumanising, or devaluing their identity).
I think we can be a little bit more careful about when or when not we can conclude certain language, emotions and ideas do indeed have such outcomes. For the most part, we are a bunch of gay men and women on a musical forum. I think you can probably safely assume that the context in which chick flick is used here is simply descriptive - or perhaps even in a positive sense - than you might see it used in a group of hyper masculine young men.
Context matters.

Umm no can't agree. Sure in the 40's 50's there was a genre of films usually called "women's weepies" Many of the films mentioned like Now,Voyager and Stella Dallas fall into this category but often went well beyond the parameters of something like A Letter to Three Wives and The Women and became classics in their own right. Mildred Pierce is really a film noir to me but it sure meets the women's weepies requirements too.
Kill Bill while undoubtedly a vengeance film is also about a mother reuniting w her child.
The fact that mens might like a film doesn't mean it must stop being "just" a chick flick, like Peirce it can have a foot in both camps.
