Was Tom Hanks in Sleepless so out of line? Are we now going to condemn Hanks? Which come to think of it was another one I watched through.

Umm no can't agree. Sure in the 40's 50's there was a genre of films usually called "women's weepies" Many of the films mentioned like Now,Voyager and Stella Dallas fall into this category but often went well beyond the parameters of something like A Letter to Three Wives and The Women and became classics in their own right. Mildred Pierce is really a film noir to me but it sure meets the women's weepies requirementstoo.

Kill Bill while undoubtedly a vengeance film is also about a mother reuniting w her child.

The fact that mens might like a film doesn't mean it must stop being "just" a chick flick, like Peirce it can have a foot in both camps.


You know you didn't actually make an argument for Kill Bill being a chick flick, right? In any case, it's not. At all. Not even a little. It's not a movie that "men might like." It's a movie that women might like. The protagonist being female or a mother is irrelevant.

Can we really safely assume such a thing when the OP is a self-identified straight man who frequently posts carelessly worded things, often posts insensitively worded things, and occasionally seems blissfully unaware when he posts totally offensive things?

This is why I was searching for clarity of intent with the use of that phrase. I think it's healthy to talk about this stuff this week. I'm pleased qolbinau's eyes rolled back face front so as to be able to continue to contribute to it.

Blissfully unaware of your own posts. Why should you have to think about them? Str8 guys get to say whatever they want and dismiss anybody who would ask you to look more carefully at your words. You've done it a lot since January.

Is a chick flick one that women can go to see and not expect the sort of anti-woman hostility in a ghettoizing phrase like "chick flick"? Nancy Meyers movies could be dismissed as chick flicks by people who prefer to isolate movies but she demonstrates that she has real problems with women, particularly younger women who are always stealing older women's men in her movies. Are hers chick flicks because she seems reactionarily "against" the women who are always the arm candy of older actors in "guy flicks" aka "movies"?

There's a *lot* to consider about the catchphrases we toss around. Much of it interesting.

Listened to a "2 Dope Queens" podcast today that had Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah and Regina Hall talking about "Girls Trip." Jada spent far too long explaining how the movie was "not just for women" because, I'd surmise, targeting an audience of 51% of the population would be bad? I didn't hear anybody say "chick flick" but I still have 15 mins to go in the podcast.

When I got home, after a bus splashed my tutu, I wrote down my thoughts. "Can a movie starring black women even BE a chick flick? Is there any precedent?"

It's a historical docudrama. And who are you arguing against? The makers of Hidden Figures for casting Kevin Costner? All white men? What social ill are you railing against, exactly?

Hork, on second thought, lamoj, can an historical documdrama be a chick flick? Like "Silkwood." Or "Amelia," about a woman, starring a woman, directed by a woman?

Speaking of social ills, would you agree that "Hidden Figures" tried to grapple with any? Is that a good thing for a movie to do, but definitely not a good thing to bring up in discussions of movies?

When you start discussing the canonical works of Douglas Sirk you should know they were given their own genre name at the time: Women's Films. Still ghettoizing but far less dismissive than "chick flick," which suggests frivolity and a lot of pink, ie, nothing like Sirk.
