Bening was pure camp in AMERICAN BEAUTY.

I don't know if you've ever met a suburban mother (and I'm not saying that all suburban women are like that), but Bening's performance was dead on. I grew up around women just like her. So like her that it was actually bizarre how accurate Bening was in her portrayal. So, I would have to strongly disagree. What I agree on is that Swank's performance was better that year. And the next year Swank won also. Just like Portman is better than her this year.

Perhaps campy was the wrong term. I was going for loud and obnoxious. I was not putting down her performance, but ray-andallthatjazz86 stated that Bening's performance was "less showy" than Swank's and I was arguing that there was nothing subtle about it, whereas Seank's character was rather timid by comparison.
