Really, really loved it. Portman is mesmerizing and is a big contender against Benning. I'd be happy with either of them winning, though I'd probably choose Portman myself.

Kunis is spectacular, but Hershey is the real featured player here. She's terrifying and thrilling. I hope if this film is represented in the supporting category, it's by Hershey. Though neither has any hope of triumphing in that category- not with the likes of Melissa Leo and Amy Adams (on THRILLING display in 'The Fighter.')

One of my favorites of the year, but far from my favorite. I think it's written quite well, but the real gems of the film are in the acting, the directing, the cinematography, the design, the effects and- of course- the dancing.

SPOILER:
That "final transformation" dance at the close of the film is one of the most chilling moments I've experienced in a film in awhile. WOW.

I saw the film tonight and add me to the list of people who LOVED it. I found it THRILLING. I thought the use of sound was really interesting and Natalie Portman was phenomenal. I would kill for her to win the Oscar but I'm terrible at predicting those things.

I seriously can't stop thinking about it and must see it again ASAP, and I never say that about films.

I disagree re Melissa Leo in THE FIGHTER, I thought she was way hammy and at points almost campy. Hershey played the mother role in ways that were terrifying at times and yet never campy while still bringing in echoes of Faye Dunaway in MOMMIE DEAREST to her performance (which I'm sure was one of her inspirations here). It's a terrific turn.
I loved Winona Ryder though, she was astonishing. What a great movie.

I saw this today. Hands down one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Natalie Portman is excellent and was mesmerizing to watch.

May I ask why? Did you see it?

I second that, saw it tonite in Long Beach, and thought it was outstanding, Portman was outstanding.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

Incredible film, i love the hand held way it's shot and the use of colour (black and white). Portman was incredible but Kunis stole it for me, she was brilliant.

Singtopher, I saw it the other night. I found the first .. hour, maybe? I lost track ... hour or so interminably boring and then I found the rest to be unearned ridiculousness.

I saw a screener so I didn't see her face on the big screen. I heard she was scarier then.

But really, I don't understand how anyone could think this movie was anything other than steaming pile of dog crap.

I haven't seen it, so I can't comment. But I have read a full synopsis and seen extended trailers, and I keep asking myself what the point of it all could be. I've been waiting for some kind of dissenting voice (all I've heard or read is this over-effusive praise,) so I'm curious to see what kind of response PRS' posts get.

I think it was a foregone conclusion people were going to jizz all over this movie before it even opened, with the fervid buzz on here and people gasping with delight over the posters. Maybe I just don't get Darren Aronofsky? What the movie appears to be about (from watching it) and what its fans seem to purport its about are two different things.

Finally saw it and I loved it...it was a modern crazy retelling of Swan Lake. I loved what the did with the music in this movie. I thought Natalie Portman gave the performance of her carreer, Mila Kunis was great, Barbara Hershey scared me and I think Vincent Cassel should get nominated as well. I am going to see this a second time as well to se hat I didn't catch the first time through

Thanks Phyl- This film has certainly received a fair amount of criticism as well as praise, but that seems to be the way with these things. I know a handful of folks who are in your boat. This is my first Aronofsky film, so I can't comment on whether or not you get him. I thought it was thrilling and I'd see it again.

I saw it and liked it fine. Can't say I loved it and I don't feel like I ever need to see it again. Put me in the camp with those that don't see what all the fuss is about. I didn't really feel like I was watching a breakthrough performance from Natalie Portman. Mila Kunis' performance was far more interesting.

I thought the movie was a hoot. A little trashy, a little exploitative, a lot over the top. I did not find an ounce of profundity in this film. But I had a great time watching it.

I thought the best parts of the movie were the dance sequences. And I think Natalie Portman was pretty sensational and would be a shoo-in for the Oscar...but I think we are finally getting around to the crowning of Ms. Bening. And thank God for that.

Portman did a lot of ACTING!! in this movie. I think its Bening's year.

I found it wildly mesmerizing. I agree with the poster who mentions use of the sound effects, and the very sly special effects of interchanging the girl’s faces at points.

And yes, the packed theatre just sat stunned afterwards.

Was there a different screenplay in the theatrical version?
