Blades of Glory

Posted: 3/29/07 at 12:03pmNo. I'm SICK of Will Ferrell doing these type of roles/films. I HATED him going on every damn talk show in the world as Ricky Bobby. John Heder at least varies his roles. I likes "School for Scoundrels" a lot. I WON'T be going to this one.

Posted: 3/29/07 at 12:04pmHard to tell. I can't put my finger on whether this is a freewheeling comedy in the style of the wonderful ANCHORMAN or a barely-sublimated "oh my God guys acting gay together even though they are NOT GAY oh how funny" mess in the style of WILD HOGS. I'll wait for DVD.

No. It looks lame and like most of the jokes will just be standard homophobic jokes.
Plus it just looks terrible.
But I do love Will Arnett and Amy Poehler. They'll probably be funny, but the movie looks like it won't be.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

I hate John Heder. His characters are all stupid, in a bad way.
I won't be seeing this.

"John Heder at least varies his roles."
Really?

Posted: 3/29/07 at 12:13pmInteresting. Well, I'm just more interested in seeing Amy Poehler and Will Arnett more than anything. They are too funny.

Posted: 3/29/07 at 12:15pmNever heard of John Heder. Can't stand Will Ferrell. I'll pass on this one.

John Heder is Napoleon Dynamite
um... this looks really lame. Is it me or is Will Ferel in too many movies today?

Posted: 3/29/07 at 12:24pmOne more time: John Heder was in NAPOLEON DYNAMITE.

Why are we even discussing this when The Lookout starring Joseph Gordon Levitt and Mathew Goode opens tomorrow.
Or at least go see Meet the Robinsons. It's by Disney which means it'll probably a musical in a few years.
Blades of Glory even has a homophobic title.

tazber: ROFL hahaha I can just see it now, Meet the Robinsons the musical, with a big tenor dressed up as a T-Rex "I have a very extremely suprisingly enormously large head! and such tiny little arms!"
tehehe I'm so easily amused =] but thank you for inspiring a laugh!!!

For those of you who understandably fear the homophobia that could be possible in a movie like this, a snippet of Stephen Holden's NYTimes review:
"It comes as a huge relief to find that as “Blades of Glory” speeds along, it avoids going to the obvious, ugly place for cheap laughs. The notion of a male figure-skating team in which one member is a chest-beating, fire-breathing Lothario and the other a persnickety, virginal girly-man cries out for the kind of easy, gay-baiting jokes that mars comedies like “Wild Hogs.”
It’s not that “Blades of Glory” is entirely unaware of its largely untapped subtext. In Sarah Kawahara’s amusing ice skating choreography, sliding scissor kicks land faces in crotches, and groins grind into groins. But the humor lies more in the ooh-that-must-hurt category than in any suggestion that such collisions might be sexy."

Posted: 3/30/07 at 11:27amoh please, robbie, i am disappointed to see that you've been taken in by the times, historically an unrepentantly homophobic bastion of gay bashing. clearly they have a rooting interest in seeing this movie succeed, be seen and contribute to more worldwide figure skater bashing.

i hated will ferrell on snl. couldn't watch him. at all.
for some reason my wife wanted to see elf. that made me accept the idea that maybe he had some talent if he was given the right material.
i loved anchorman but probably more for the supporting performances and saw it as more of an ensemble piece, despite the title.
i thought he did a really nice understated job in adam rapp's winter passing but that was a supporting role.
i loved talladega nights but then, i'm also a nascar fan and again the funniest stuff in that movie i felt came from the supporting cast.
i really enjoyed him in stranger than fiction (although i was pissed about the end).
some of his movies i didn't even see (curious george, kicking and screaming) and others i just thought pretty much blew (bewitched).
i've always seen ferrell's funniest bits as the throwaway stuff. the conversation he has with his dog, baxter, at the beginning of anchorman, the late night phone calls with cal in talladega nights as opposed to the overblown scene chewing stuff that seems to get talked about.
i know i won't be seeing blades of glory at the theatre, but i will probably rent it hoping it's more like the ones i like than the ones i thought blew.
