I remember reading the true story in Playboy magazine, of all places (!), and thinking, "Boy, this is gonna make a hell of a movie".
By the way, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" both started as articles in Playboy.
Some folks really do get it for the articles.
I decided to wait for the DVD to come out. I just knew I needed to watch it alone. Knowing the story beforehand I was still devastated by the end and went out for a drink to shake it off. And after requiem for a dream, which I borrowed from a friend, I popped the DVD out of the player and walked it back to my friend. I didn't even want it in my home! I almost needed therapy after that movie!! But it was well done. I did cocktails after that one also!
I don't want to turn this into a Hillary Swank Love Thread... she gets BASHED around here so often!
But with Boys Don't Cry and Million Dollar Baby, she gave two of the most haunting performances I've ever seen on film.
Seemingly simple, but devastatingly complicated in the end.
I wouldn't take her Oscars away from her. Not for one minute.

I haven't seen this film. Knowing the story, there's no reason for me to suffer through a film treatment - and I don't need those lessons.
But I just want to say that I have never talked to ANYONE who's seen it who wasn't completely blown away by Ms. Swank's performance.
DG, it's unbelievably painful.
Knowing even just a little bit about your past history, I would say, "Don't go there." Just appreciate from afar.
She was good.

I have no doubt, Besty - there's been too much universal acclaim to question.
Frankly, I just like HER! I love the hard-scrabble route to success - and her tale of showing up with her mother and hoping for the best is one I like!
I thought it was a little overrated, but, obviously, it's best thing it had going for it was Swank's devastating, completely invested, emotionally stirring, and totally brilliantly calculated performance. She was fantastic.
I agree besty, she completely deserved both Oscars.

When she won for Boys Don't Cry, poeple were saying, "Annette Bening will have plenty more chances. Hillary Swank is difficult to cast. She'll will NEVER get another role like this. It's a once in a lifetime thing."
Oops...
i remember seeing the cure in '89 and being so happy when they busted this out as an encore.
Superb, and yes very upsetting. What a great cast.
I have a slight preference, though, for SOLDIER'S GIRL which was released a few years later and is based on the story of Calpurnia Adams....played by Lee Pace in his movie debut. It also starred Troy Garity who, when I first saw this, seemed destined for big-time stardom. Who knows what he's done since...
