One that I haven't seen mentioned here is NIGHTY NIGHT. A very black comedy. Available on DVD.
Mary Millar (Rose) from Keeping Up Appearances was Julie Andrews understudy in CAMELOT on Broadway and London's original Mrs Potts in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.
Nighty Night was scarily addictive. I didn't understand how I could find the central character so obnoxious and yet continue to watch the programme week after week.
I don't know that one! It sounds good though! Thanks for the tip. :3
The only reason I prefer the older comedies is because that is generally what is available via PBS. I would LOVE see the newer ones to, so if you have any suggestions for DVDs...
Can't wait for the To the Manor Born set- I've been putting off buying it, and now I know why! Keith is wonderful

To the Manor Born, Good Life, Keeping Up Appearances, Vicar of Dibley, Mulberry and Are You Being Served? basically defined my late elementary school years.
I watch them now and get all giddy again.
I must say, I'm a big fan of the internet, because of it helping me watch stuff when it's not necessarily available on the television. Right now, for instance, I am watching 'Snuff Box' on the Toob of Yuu. It's not the most obvious comedy duo in the world, but it works, and despite the whole thing being a bit wrong, I'm enjoying it. Or maybe I'm enjoying it *because* it's a bit wrong. Knowing me, it'll be the latter. Also, I'd totally do Matt Berry.
This thread's making me feel like I should dig out some older classics. I'm not sure if I will or not, but the thread is certainly making me feel like I should. ;D

You should always dig out the classics.

Wickedboy would like to go in the over 102 section lol
My favourite episode of THE GOOD LIFE is the one where Margo is playing Maria in the local amateur group's production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC.
Margo is very, very nervous prior to the show, later at the after party there is a conversation that goes something like this:
Barbara: I was surprised when Margo came on and sang "Maria"
Gerry: That's the name of her character, Maria.
Barbara: Yes, but isn't that song from WEST SIDE STORY?
Well, it made me laugh...and still does.
This doesn't look like edelweiss. . .
YOU SEE! Even Barbara noticed. I told Miss Mountshaft they should have bought the real thing. . .

I totally watched that one last night!
Margo: When the Shark bites/when the bee stings
Barbara: Shark?
Margo: You see? It's all because of that kid with the runny nose.
I was the star. I could have saved that show. Instead I gave a performance that ran the depths of ineptitude.
What about the second performance?
We've been taken off.
They are saying the chandelier is unsafe.
What did Miss Mountshaft have to say?
"Well that's show biz dear!"
I could strangle that woman.
Husk, you left out my favo(u)rite line!
Margo: Oh my God! I've strayed into "The Threepenny Opera!"
Pronounced "thrupenny," yet!

Gah, how could I forget?
I had to listen to that twice to catch it was "Threepenny"
Slightly off-off-topic, but the glorious Penelope Keith features prominently in the BBC Noel Coward Collection recently out on DVD--in "Private Lives" and (spectacularly) "Hay Fever."
Ms Routlidge is at my local theatre this week in "Crown Matramonial" Shall Ipost a review?

Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are two of my favorite movies...
And if we're counting miniseries, Geraldine McEwan and Prunella Scales in "Mapp and Lucia" is one of the glories of Western civilization.
Pal Joey, can I get an amen?

Good lord, isn't it funny you Americans like our old British comedy, we British like your old American comedy.
Where would we be without:
I love Lucy
Bewitched
Soap
Golden Girls
Frasier
There are more......Classics!
I just hope to god you never saw our home grown attempt at "Golden Girls". It was called "Brighton Belles". I blush at the thought!
Oh, I share your love of classic American comedies, too.
I also like the relatively newer Brit comedies, such as "Black Books," "Little Britain," and "The Catherine Tate Show."
But until the advent of BBC America, we mostly got the older ones.
Sorry I didn't respond earlier, but you know how reclusive Georgie and I get when we're in our little...

I'm shocked, shocked at the dearth of Blackadder love here. It's glorious sarcasm, inaccurate history lessons, and one of the best comedy ensembles ever all tied up in one show. What more could you want?
Of course, I'm watching Black Books right now and the sight of Manny in a Bo Peep costume will be forever burned into my retinas. So that's something.

I've heard good things about MIGHTY BOOSH. THICK OF IT sounds awesome.
Plum, I love "Blackadder."
I've taken to calling certain people "you big girl's blouse"--one of my all-time favorite lines.
