Phyllis Rogers Stone is the one who got me into this show. So damn funny!

Man, it seems like literally everyone under 40 is in love with this show. People whose taste I trust constantly rave about it. I watched my first ep the other day - season 2, ep 1 - and was completely underwhelmed. I found the constant lurching between sitcom and sketch comedy and "indie" film styles jarring. Sure, there were a couple of moments that made me chuckle - as there are in nearly every SNL ep - but it didn't add up to much for me. It keeps getting described as this revolutionary piece of paradigm shifting comedy and to me it feels like just another average Comedy Central sketch show headed by performers with... limited charisma. You know the kind of show - a touch edgy for network tv, but bland and safe enough for basic cable. I must be missing something here. But, that's just my stinky opinion, so I'll let you guys get back to enjoying the program. I won't hate watch the show and then continually post in this thread with a weekly laundry list of the show's offenses, nor will I start a separate thread to catalog every supposed deficiency in each week's show while claiming that I won't watch another episode. I'll just accept that the show isn't for me and move on to something I do connect with.

Ep 1 and 2 this season felt less inspired than last year--but 3 and especially 4 were *brilliant*. Wow.

I would never call it a sketch show, though it is fragmented. But as you say HT, some shows just don't connect.

Although I do not like the fact that Dan Savage thinks Ilana is his spirit animal. Bitch, please.

You're right, it's not a sketch show. I just meant it had some of the sensibilities of a sketch show which feel completely at odds with its other sitcomy and/or indie comedy sensibilities. It just feels schizophrenic to me. And I get that THAT is probably part of its appeal to some people. Good to know that season 2 ep 1 wasn't one of the strongest. If I had to watch one ep (from either season) that would hook me, what would you recommend?

HorseTears, I would actually say the two most recent episodes (Season 2, Episodes 3 and 4) are two of the strongest of either series. Most of what everyone loves about this show was encapsulated in those.

I love this show, but it did take me a few episodes to get into it. I wasn't even sure if I liked it until around episode 4 of season 1. I don't really think of it as groundbreaking or anything. I just love it because the writing can take hilarious, unexpected turns. And it manages to portray what living in New York City is like better than any other show on television, IMO. So many shows are filmed there, but this one captures the ridiculousness of the place.

As for style/tone, I'd say it's in the same vein as Workaholics or Always Sunny in Philadelphia. It has an irreverence to it, and humor that is quirky, sometimes childish/innocent, but also sexually frank. And a camera presence that feels very deadpan.

I was trying to think of a good entry episode--but I agree. The last two really will either make you a fan, or agree that it's not your kind of show.

God, I love this show! I want to go to a roof party where cute 'straight' guys are making out in a kiddie pool then to an underground speakeasy where they sing Judy Garland! My idea of a fun ****in night. These ladies and their supporting cast are brilliant. "Don't ruin mico-penises for me!"

I admit I found it slightly aimless--I actually wanted them to stay at a party a bit longer, lol... But VAL is God and madeup for anything else. Now we know why that crazy lady a few episodes back on the subway called her Val!

I thought the episode was merely okay until we got to the speakeasy, at which point it became amazing in its surrealness.

Now we know why that woman on the subway called Abbi, "Val!"

I also loved Trey's awkward trainer party and Lincoln's Black Irish exit.

Legit question: Paul Downs- gay?

That is so crazy you say that because I was just saying to our own blueroses last night that he pinged gay to me. But I have terrible gaydar, so you can't go by me.

This wasn't as laugh out loud funny as some of the other episodes, but I appreciated the deeper dip into more surrealism than they've ever done before.

I immediately thought of the subway woman when Val turned out to be Abbi's alter ego. I wonder if there are more easter eggs in that episode, because there was also bizarro world Abbi and Ilana that looks like them when they got maced.

He pinged gay to me, too, but maybe it was the shirt.

I've gotten the vibe in previous episodes, but I'm not sure. Unrelated to this show, but related to pinging, I saw the first episode of Schitt's Creek and Eugene Levy's son pinged gay to me like nobody's business, but I can find nothing to corroborate his gayness. Or Paul Downs's.

Levy's son is openly gay, apparently.

I am flattered.

But Paul Downs is still sadly a mystery.

Dan Levy is the weirdest date you have ever gone on. Unless you want to hear about how great he is (maybe I'm just a weird date.) There's my star ****er story. That was in his MTVCanada hosting days, mind you.
