Broadway Singers that Smoke?

I have a little bit of a question for my own personal usage. Do any of you know any Broadway actors (in musicals) that smoke? I know it's fairly rare due to how damaging it can be on their throats, but still there has to be some.

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

It's something that always amazes me. Performers have to do so much to keep their bodies and voices in shape and yet so MANY of them smoke. I can't imagine singing well for very long when you spend your life smoking. It's just like all those gymrats who have perfect bodies from all those hours in the gym - then step outside and light up - guess they care more about their appearance than they do about their ultimate health. Weird.
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

Sadly, Adam Pascal smokes (and it's probably destroying his lovely voice and he'll get lung cnacer and die way too soon *sighs in both disapproval and sadness*)

Okay, I even scared myself...I need a life...

2. Great buckets of Spoffnor, they're going to sing!
3. "I love shrubs that are historical." -Johnny and The Sprites
4. "We're not singing it to you, we're singing it for us." -Rosario Dawson, about La Vie Boheme
5. "The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - which you had thought special and particular to you. And now, here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out, and taken yours." -The History Boys
6. "Pass the parcel. That's sometimes all you can do. Take it, feel it and pass it on. Not for me, not for you, but for someone, somewhere, one day. Pass it on, boys. That's the game I want you to learn. Pass it on." -The History Boys

Alix Korey smokes. She lit up right after getting out of the stage door, and held a cigarette while she took a picture with me.

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

Yeah it's surprisingly not that rare at all for Broadway performers to smoke. Shame.
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

That's sad. I feel sorry for actors who smoke.

When I asked for Jesse L. Martin's autograph outside after seeing Daphne Rubin-Vega and Anthony Rapp in concert, he was smoking. It's sad to think that people who rely on their voice to make a living would do something so damaging to it.
But when did New Hampshire become--Such a backward wasteland of seatbelt hating crazies?...I mean, only 40 people actually live there. The others are just visitors who come for the tax-free liquor and three inches of novelty coastline. John Hodgeman on The Daily Show (1-30-07)

Please. Do any of you people go to opera? Talk about taking care of your voices, those people keep Marlboro in business single-handedly.

*grumble*

Yes, Adam smokes. So does Raúl, and both have had a number of vocal problems - Raúl more recently, but likely from all the screaming he'd been doing with Taboo. Still, I hate that they do it.

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

bwaysinger- I've heard that opera singers are the most destructive of their voices. Drinking, smoking, etc.

Interesting.

I was wondering during Light in the Piazza, how they were all singing opera WHILE smoking.

Carly Jibson smokes. Perhaps that was the cause of the "curable voice problem" that forced her to miss a ton of performances and leave Hairspray early.

Euan Morton as well.

OK, so who on B'way DOESN'T smoke? They seem to be in the minority.

I'd venture Idina Menzel- she's extremely into health/fitness and loves her yoga. Just a guess.

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

I'm actually not even surprised anymore to hear of actors and singers who smoke. It makes NO sense in their industry, but it seems like a staggering number of them do.

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

I know tons of Broadway performers who smoke. I mean come on, have you ever been to an open call before? It's a regular smoking lounge outside. I would say that quite a good deal of actors, singers and dancers smoke. "It's my body and my business and my business is my business and nobody's business but my own."

Hah, okay guys..

Thanks...This makes me feel a little less guilty for certain indulgences. But still...I know it's bad.

Raul and Adam? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo! re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?
But, hey. There are a lot of actors and actresses that smoke...and not just cigarettes (sp?), either...

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

Dancers smoke a lot too... I remember taking one or two grueling classes, and after class, still in our sweaty dance clothes, smoking a cigarette out back with about half the other dancers.

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

Love4Cheno, those poor opera folk are ridiculous with their vices. I don't have a single classical singer friend who doesn't smoke and drink, usually at the same time and often right before singing.
Then they'll go on vocal rest to "save their voice." It's funny.

As for the Piazza folk, I'm reasonably certain they're just good at faking it. Pretty sure Victoria doesn't, nor does Michael Beresse.
I've had to smoke onstage before. You just sort of learn the Clinton motto: I smoked, but I didn't inhale.

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

Damn, they smoke right before singing? I'll admit to having some vices- when I go out with friends for drinks, I always crave a cigarette. I'll smoke an American spirit and tell myself it's *slightly* better than a normal cigarette, but I'd never do it before singing.

As for Piazza, I was in the second row, and the actors DEFINITELY inhaled. That's why I was so surprised. Clark was fully smoking while she sang Dividing Day. The cigs did smell funky- they seem to be either herbal or the European hand-rolled kind.
