re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

I only know two that smoke, cause I saw them doing so and they said that they do...Idina Menzel and Richard H Blake

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

So many theater people smoke! Whenever I have done a show, everyone always has to take breaks so that 3/4 of the cast can go outside and smoke. It's crazy. I hate inhaling second hand smoke, but if I stay inside during breaks, I'm left alone.

I know that Idina Menzel and Tammy Blanchard do, Kristin Chenoweth and Bernadette Peters don't, and Liza probably does.

liza does eveything. I dont understand who she could smoke like a pack and drink a round, and then go sing on caberet

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

Cigarettes ABSOLUTELY damage your voice but some singers work with it and can work around it. Honestly, it's not worth the chance.

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

Michael Ball I believe did... and then stopped to prepare his voice better

On another note, have you ever seen a fake cigarette? They have these that you blow on and they smoke out... and it could be possible they are using fake ones. They smoke and really look entirely real... just a thought

For the posters who are saying that they know that so and so smokes... my question is how do you know? What is your proof?

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

Well, BwayFan... I'm pretty sure if you're in the presence of someone and they're sucking a cancer stick down, then continue to blow the smoke in your face, my guess is that's pretty much all the proof one needs...

Thanks for the "clarification." What I was unsure of was if in fact they had been in the presence of these people smoking or were merely speculating

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

I don't believe it's my place to tell anyone to quit smoking, but it saddens me to think of the wonderful bway voices we could lose from the habit. Just how debilitating is it? I somewhat recall Raul Esparza missing performances due to throat problems, but I could be wrong.

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

Smoking doesn't affect your sound so much as your ability to breath well while trying to sing correctly.
I started smoking for a show (the director wanted my character to do so)... it was idiotic, but I haven't quit. That was 6 years ago.
I don't notice a difference now, but I know I will in years to come should I continue.
Everyone's different. I have a friend who can smoke, drink, and everything in between and get up to sing a song and sound crystal clear. Lungs of Steel I call her.
Ah well...

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

I know first hand numerous performers on Broadway that smoke. I even know some performers mentioned on here that members say they know don't smoke that really do. My point however is that it really isn't anyone's business whether or not someone smokes. Is it just me or is it a little bit obsessive/stalkerish? People smoke, get over it. If you don't like it then move.

I don't know if Chris Sieber smokes, but he sure is smokin'.

Ha hahaha...I'm a nerd.

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

Somebody said that weed screws your voice up so much more than cigarettes...how? Cause I've def. heard that before, and was just wondering if cigarettes hamper a singers ability to breath deeply, then what does weed do?

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

Yeah, but most people from Long Island smoke. No offense but they do. If you listen to ger cd, it'll be really obvious that she does.

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

I think it is a huge waste of talent that these people smoke. It is ridiculous for them to smoke when they have so much going for them. I am no one to tell these people to stop but I think it is a very bad example to those of us younger members who look up to these stars. It basically says "It's ok to smoke if everyone else is doing it." Personally I will never smoke but I still think it is a poor example.

I'm surprised to hear that the opera singers smoke because I thought there weren't enough cigarettes left after the ballet dancers got done with them.

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

Having throat/voice problems are not just caused by smoking, especially when they're singing on Broadway 8 times a week. Unless you personally are Carly or Raul's ear, nose, and throat specialist, you can't point to smoking as the cause.

I don't know why everyone is freaking out about actors they like smoking. It's their career that's in the toilet if they f*ck up their voices up too bad, so I doubt they'll let their habit get that out of hand, and they will still be able to perform years after you've moved on.

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

It might not be in their job description but it comes with the territory. If someone like Hilary Duff smoked, everyone would say that it is an awful example to her younger fans. Well, why should these people, who have younger fans, be exempt from that? Also with the sports stars and other people that are known. If they do anything, everyone is on their case. Granted that Broadway performers are not as well known but they are out there and people know what they are doing. If this was someone like Lindsay Lohan, everyone would be complaining that it is a bad example.

re: Broadway Singers that Smoke?

Raúl's vocal problems were probably more a direct result of the screaming and growling, etc he was doing at the time. I would, however, suspect that smoking can be blamed for the way he'll be terribly out of breathe after one song and a bit of dancing. If anyone saw the HAIR concert, you'll know what I'm talking about. He was panting for like two minutes, which I really hope isn't normal.
