Sherie Rene Scott smokes???? Are you serious?
Strange, I never thought she was a smoker.
Norbert Leo Butz used to smoke. I'm sure he quit when he did DRS because it was such a demanding role and plus I dunno if I'm the only one who noticed but between DRS and Wicked he looked like he gained a bit of weight as a result.

Posted: 2/1/07 at 4:06amFor some reason or another, EVERYONE in theatre smokes. From the actors to the technicians. I don't know if its a social thing but it seems to be.

Posted: 2/1/07 at 8:13amnope. no one who works now or who has ever worked on broadway has ever smoked. if you smoke, the broadway gods will ban you from ever getting an important part. the mayor will personally bull-whip you. even one cigarette is enough to get you blacklisted. you'd better hope that no one can identify you by your bww account or your career is over before it even began.

One of the worst things you can do for yourself is quit smoking while doing a show. Your voice will go through hell as the toxins leave your body. Trust me...first-hand experience. I quit smoking right before a big show and it was BRUTAL. I thought I had nodes. Turns out, it was just the reaction to quitting smoking.
Best thing to do is not start. I quit (for good) over two years ago when I didn't need to sing for a while. And it made all the difference in my singing voice.

I'm not sure, but I think Lucille Ball might have had a cigarette or two in her lifetime.

I have heard that Stritch has been known to "light a few".
When Meryl Streep was doing a workshop of AN AMERICAN DAUGHTER in Seattle about a decade ago, she was a chimney.

When I first met Tyne Daly, she was in town for a meeting with my then-bosses, the Weisslers, about the upcoming production of GYPSY. I was to meet her early on a Saturday morning in the office and provide her with breakfast before they arrived.
She promptly sent me out for unfiltered Camels. I was horrified!

Posted: 2/1/07 at 1:41pmI spoke to Leah Hocking after a performance of All Shook Up and she mentioned that she had been having trouble singing a lot of her stuff lately. Way to smoke. I'm sure that helped a lot.

awww...I thought this was a discussion about the very best and most popular smoker.
I would nominate my mom in the 70's...she was amazing...she had a Lark going while brushing her teeth.

Call me provincial, but I think actors smoking while stage-dooring is comparable to smoking on a tv talk show. It just shouldn't be done. A lot of teenagers and little kids are there to meet their favorite actor -- the one who's inspiring them to go into theatre -- and they're getting the message that it's perfectly ok to smoke in an industry that's completely voice-and-appearance driven.
Seriously, actors. Smoke if you want to. But can't ya wait 30 more minutes???

Luckily, I was only one of two people waiting at the ROF stage door, so not too many people were subjected to second-hand smoke.
