CALL in GAY DAY - December 10, 2008

What's next on the protest agenda, you ask?

With the huge success of Jointheimpact.com and tomorrow's turnout (expected to be biggest EVER protest organized by our community), and with the boycotts getting so much attention, it is CRUCIAL we keep the pressure on those who should and will be held accountable for violating the constitutional rights of GLBTIQ persons in CA, AZ, FL and AR.

Next up is a "Call in Gay Day"...aka "A Day Without Gay"

All GLBTIQ's and their friends, families and supporters are urged to stay home or refrain from work on December 10, 2008, a day which coincides with International Human Rights day. The impact to this country's economy will be massive and it WILL make all those who are apathetic or disconnected from what is going on to America's GLBTIQs will have no choice but to notice. This is classic MLK and Gandhi strategy of hitting the oppressors where it hurts most: their pockets.

Maybe this kind of activism's a young person's game? I read the description and think it needs a disclaimer at the end like: "This action conceived by baristas, for baristas."

Not that there's anything wrong with baristas. It's just that in this economy, I can't imagine there are that many people who really can risk calling in sick or that there's even a chance for it to have much of an impact, economic or otherwise. The only people who are going to notice are the bosses and managers who are going to have to deal with some people not showing up to work.

Although I admit if every Intersexed person in the country calls in sick that day, the economy will grind to a halt.

I can also see it making a statement if you work for a mormon-owned company, but what if you work for some groovy place that offers partner benefits and is super-gay-friendly? How does it help the cause if you punish them?

I'm afraid I have to agree. I work for a small gay-friendly company (there are only 5 of us) with same-sex benefits. They are not the ones I should be protesting.

Back when Queer Nation was a viable entity there was one cool action, and of course not everybody did it, wherein people carried around little business cards with them at all times. If somebody asked you for assistance in some way or you did any kind of good Samaritan act, afterwards you'd hand them a "You've just been helped by a gay person!" card.

I liked the coming out/visibility of it. Maybe there's some sort of variation folks who actually have no intention of "calling in gay" can do that would be meaningful to those with whom they interact in a work day?

And even if every gay person on the planet participated for that day, it wouldn't amount to more than an impromptu holiday. An inconvenience for those trying to get things done.

Everything would pick back up again the next day, per usual. I'm not sure how "punishing" it would be even with 100 percent participation.

...which you won't get, for the very reason and scenario Mister Matt mentioned.

I'm okay with the idea of not buying absolutely anything for a day or whatnot. I think it's a pretty great idea. However, when it comes to work, I don't think it works so much.
When I used to work in retail, I'd get paid by the hour. If I didn't go to work, they'd call in someone else, the money would go to them, I wouldn't get paid for that day, the company made its money and I didn't. Many people are paid by the hour so if they don't go, they don't get paid.
I currently work at a university, and the 10th is the last day of classes when my students have to turn in their final papers. If I don't go to work, it's them getting away with turning in their papers late, and it'd go unnoticed by the school since no one would know I didn't hold a session that day.
It sounds good on paper, but I don't think it works so well in execution.

Yes. Hopefully the performers in ALL the Broadway shows will participate and not perform on those days. We are SERIOUS about this right???

All the negative Mary's on this thread make me want to puke. Get some balls "gentlemen" and get off your asses. We have a revolution to win!!! Your lack of enthusiasm is just an excuse for not helping.

Some of us have jobs that we'd actually like to keep (and desperately need to keep in this economy) and can think of mature ways to protest gay marriage than my punishing ourselves by getting fired.

I find apathetic sarcastic nellie queens to be very pathetic. Have another martini Noel and don't let our little revolution tax you any further.

I manage my apartment building, so I'm just staying in bed...

Puh-leaze Mary. I'm being trained in rapid HIV testing that day which might actually help gay men where I live a helluva lot more than my calling in gay is going to help gay people 3000 miles away.

But what do I know, Junior?

Great. Thank you for what you are doing to help gays WHEREVER they may reside. 3000 miles away or next door. We are all part of the same movement. Tearing each other down is unacceptable. Have a great weekend.

Yes. It's hypocritical how we sometimes notice what is done to us, and ignore how we are effecting others with our words and our deeds.
