"Wow, you really are just completely retarded aren't you?"
Maybe. But what does that make you? Really lonely? Bored? Suicidal? An insomniac with anger issues? Whatever the problem there is therapy for you.

19 years ago I was involved in an Off-Off Broadway showcase that just happened to have one of its few performances scheduled on the night that was designated as the first Day Without Art. What do you tell people who have put their time and money and commitment into a project that winds up falling on a day that's being designated for making such a political statement? Don't do your show? Tell people not to buy a ticket and support small theatre companies on that day? That's what some people suggested. I once got an email from a cabaret singer who was heartbroken because her opening night was scheduled for a day when women were being encouraged not to spend money as a demonstration of their economic power. Most of her reservations were cancelled. While I'm all for a good protest, I don't see the good in a protest that involves telling artists to lose money by canceling their shows and encouraging people not to support the arts for a day.

Anyone else think the concept of Call in Gay Day denotes ageism and slights all the gay retirees out there?
If someone wants to make a political statement then wouldn't the logical starting point be to get involved in actual politics? Register to vote. Get others to register to vote. Do something totally radical like run for office. Create a new political party. Affect change from within. Affect change by legislating. Start locally and work your way through the system. Just seems like a more productive use of time, money, and other resources than displaying a poor work ethic, or tossing bogus bills around.

Great way to alienate and piss off the straight people you might need as friends. And a great way to get fired. But then counter help at McDonald's is easy to replace.

Jack King, take your hate somewhere else.
And, shut up.

I am all for supporting the cause, but this does not seem like the way to go.
The issue here is education and understanding, and not demonstrating somehow how much people rely on gays for their goods and services.
I know when those supporting the cause of illegal immigration took the day off, here in LA, many people were glad - they did not see a real impact on anything except roads and freeway traffic - so it kind of backfired.
Namo or Diva found a suggestion about not using the work marriage for straight couples - I think that is actually a wonderful idea - it starts the conversation and is a way to educate those who might not otherwise realize how hurtful and discriminatory legislating the inability to marry someone you love is.

This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.
What if you are a DOCTOR or a Nurse or a Policeman or Fireman, or a postal worker or WHATEVER...
What if you need YOUR Doctor or Fireman and they happen to have called in "gay"?
What if you need YOUR hair done or your UPS package delivered (cuz you KNOW all the drivers are gay or lesbians, right?)
What if the kidney you were waiting for becomes available and your lesbian transplant coordinator called in "GAY"?
Besides, I have tickets for [TOS] that night, and I will be pissed if it is cancelled because the cast called in "gay", or WORSE, their straight understudies went on in their place!

Fighting amongst ourselves. Insulting each other and causing a bigger divide. Centurion, or whoever you really are, you have done more damage in this thread that any gains you hope to make on December 10. Enough.
December 10 will almost certainly be a failure as people CAN NOT afford to call in to work. I can't. I won't. I can't make donations to organizations who are actively and constructively fighting this fight. I can't keep a roof over my head if I call in sick--I'm unemployed starting Dec 25 until the next show comes into my theatre.
Not everyone can do everything. If you want to call in gay on the 10th, bravo! I applaud anyone who can do it. But STOP condemning those who can't. Let each do what they can.
I couldn't make the first NYC protest. But I made the next one. And, I will be at any and every I can. And, I will continue to do MY grassroots and netroots everything to educate people and make a difference.
We all have to do what we are meant and able to do.
So, please, let's STOP the fighting and work TOGETHER--despite and because of our differences.

I refuse to do it because I don't think I should punish my fellow co-workers and my company that provides excellent health benefits that extend to same-sex couples and is an equal opportunity employer.
"[Gore] was widely perceived as arrogant. If you know something, you're not smart. You're a smarty-pants. It's annoying. People get annoyed with your knowledge. It goes back to high school, to not doing your homework ... 'There's something I should know, I don't know why I should know it but someone knows it and I don't. So I'm going to have to make fun of him now.'"

I'm going to spend the day making reservations at local resturants that supported Prop 8 and then not show up.
"What happened to that party of 20?"
When they call back, I let them know why I won't be eating there.

If I tried calling in gay, I would be told that being gay is not a valid excuse to get the day off, and that if I don't come in I will be fired. And, lets face it, how many people will call in gay? I am willing to bet most people who do participate in this will call in sick, which defeats the whole purpose of "Call in gay day." Because isn't it to raise awareness about how many gay people there are in the work place? So if one calls in sic instead of gay who will know that the person is gay, besides themselves?

Right now, I'm calling for a pizza pie.
And I'm calling in straight on December 10th. Actually, December 10th is very big day for me. Two presentations. Whew. That's what I'm working on this weekend when I'm not giving fantastic advice to my fellow thespians.
