The technology has gotten better since Turner's days, but it still looks pretty crappy, IMO.

And regardless of the quality, I don't think it really increases sales or viewership, as you say Borstalboy. Ted Turner tried it, and for every "new fan" he gained for seeing Miracle on 34th St. in color, he got reams of letters and public criticism for doing it.

I remember in the late 80's/early 90's s Christmas episode of "I Love Lucy" was aired as a primetime special during the holiday season. The whole episode was in black and white until the end when they let the Christmas tree and then boom - color. I remember enjoying the effect but I was probably under ten when it aired/

“The Christmas Episode” was first presented as part of the series in December 1956. The episode wasn’t included in the series’ long history of rebroadcasts, first on CBS Daytime and later in syndication, the network noted, adding that it was thought to be “lost” until CBS “found” it — in 1989.

1989 it was so I would have been just shy of 11

Not a fan of colorizing black-and-white prints. To me, b-n-w represents an art form that stands on its own. One of my favorite books is PAINTING WITH LIGHT by the legendary John Alton originally published in 1949. What the early cinematographers and tv production crews understood was how to manipulate shadows and b-n-w gradients to achieve stunning visual effects. And they were masters of low light camera-work and in-camera editing which are arguably becoming lost art forms in the present era of all-things-digital. I still shoot still pix on b-n-w film every chance I get because despite its short shelf life analog film is a wonderful medium for image capture.

I believe I once read that Desilu was one of the few tv production outfits that actually shot 35 mm film while most tv producers shot 16 mm but my memory's foggy.

I guess the only constant is change after all.

I haven't read every comment. I will echo some comedienne. "Lucy looks adorable in black and white but crazy in color." and I agree.

I do not know about the sets and costumes, but I do know that the makeup was designed for black and white. To do a literal colorization, she's wearing red and green make up. It wasn't pretty.

I don't remember early episodes of Bewitched.

For those of you old TV buffs, you may recall that I Dream of Jeannie was in B&W for the first season (or two). When they switched to color, they redesigned Jeannie's bottle. The B&W one looked too harsh and contrasty in color, so a whole new design was created.

I met a guy in Los Angeles who owned original props of both bottles. There were several made, but he has originals for both the B&W bottle and the color bottle. Quite a difference between them.

Whether you realize it or not, quite a lot of thought goes into the designs for these shows and movies shot in B&W.

I know that one of the bottles sold at auction just this past year, but I never saw what it went for.

Just found it! It was one of the black and white bottles:

An original genie bottle used on the first season of I Dream of Jeannie (NBC, 1965-1970). The glass bottle is painted with gold paint accents with patina and floral vine motifs. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Larry Hagman written on his personal stationery stating that this bottle was created by artist Robert Purcell and marked with two markings that were used to identify the bottle as #2 of 6 made. The bottle is also known as The Original Golden Vines Bottle. Height, 11 inches"

Jungle, the sets and costumes for "I Love Lucy" were all in shades of grey to maximize the look for B&W T.V.

This detail is included in the scene in "The Mambo Kings" when they make their guest appearance on an episode of the show.

Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

Holy crap! That's a nice chunk of change.

So this guy I know has two pricey bottles (one of each). He's a costume and prop collector, though. Actually well known. He's not a friend of mine, but I met him and got to see everything he has in his place. The collection is staggering. I actually took pictures of it all (with his permission). The photos I posted are just grabbed from the web, not his, but I did it to show the difference.

In the "I Love Lucy Complete Series" dvd collection, they have a bonus feature where an audience member shot some color footage with a home movie camera. It's interesting to watch, but I really prefer to watch them in black and white.

I don't know what's up with people. B&W can be a really beautiful medium. I once knew a film "director" who wouldn't watch anything in B&W. He said it drove him crazy. But he was missing out on some of the most interesting movies ever made. The use of shadow and light can be a brilliant effect in B&W.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I won't be watching. That colorization is an eyesore.

I don't buy CBS' reasoning on why they felt the need to colorize I LOVE LUCY.

There are many younger viewers who have fallen in love with classic black and white programming on some of the various nostalgia channels on cable (Antenna TV, ThisTV, MeTV, RetroTV, TVLand, etc.)

I LOVE LUCY airs on various of these channels in it's original black and white format, the show has never been out of syndication and it's available on DVD.

Hallmark airs the show in a 3 hour block.

I know people 1/2 my age who watch the show.

The show has never fallen out of the public consciousness.

ME TV is peppered with b/w programs

Recently watched a Naked City that took place in Coney Island in winter with Steeplechase in the background. If a show stinks it will stink in color. If it is good being in b/w should not matter.

Talk about black and white classics - I just watched the Bride of Frankenstein on TCM and now I'm watching The Mummy. All in glorious BLACK AND WHITE!
