Interesting. I'm not a fan of colorizing B&W. HOWEVER, I haven't seen it even attempted in 20 years or so, so I'm actually interested what it's going to look like with the advances in technology we have now.

Not interested. Even from the stills you can see the chiaroscuro suffered. Leave a classic alone!

So what's the reason to colorize? To make it seem more like "modern day?" It was not modern day. It was BACK THEN. When I watch it I want to be brought back to THEN.
Is it being colorized to satisfy everyone's rabid curiosity as to what color scheme was in the Riccardos' living room? Not likely.
I see no reason for colorization. It only serves to make everything look and feel the same. We must get rid of the differences!!!!

I wouldn't want to colorize Citizen Kane--or any of the movies from the pre-color age that have gorgeous black-and-white cinematography.
But television series? I'm not so sure. I like the nostalgic b&w feel of many old TV series, but I'm a big Judy Garland fan, and I was disappointed that the DVDs of her series went out-of-print so quickly.
If you were to tell me that by colorizing them, they would sell hundreds of thousands of copies, I would support colorizing in a heartbeat.
Especially now, as Jordan says, that technological advances may have made the process more refined. And especially if you could press a button and watch them in the original black-and-white.

The colorization of the first two seasons of Bewitched worked well, I thought. They're watchable enough if you're not familiar with the originals.

I always think it looks off, and I've never been fooled by it. The B&W TV shows and films were made that way, lit that way, the art direction and costumes were designed that way, the makeup and hair were designed that way, etc.
For example, they used to use "the big white set" (that's exactly what they called it) in Fred & Ginger movies at RKO, because it photographed so well in B&W. White floors, walls, furniture, and accessories. It was designed for B&W. I'm not interested in seeing something like that in color, since (in theory), it wouldn't make sense in color. But it also wouldn't work in color, because it was never meant to be seen that way.
And for people on screen, it always looks like "rouge on a corpse" to me. There is something "dead" about them. It's kinda creepy.

A high percentage of folks won't watch something in black & White. This stunt is going to get two I Love Lucy episodes on in prime time with a huge network push. I can accept that.

Jane, according to the article and some posts, they said they want to reach a bigger audience and introduce it to viewers who have never seen the show before. That the reason they want to colorize it. To capture a modern audience.

I haven't seen a good job of colorizing yet, so I "always" think it looks like rouge on a corpse. When I see an example that doesn't, I will stop saying always.

In the Christmas episode, the costumer goofed. Ricky is in a coat and tie and Lucy is in a flannel shirt. Where is that 1950s chic style that Lucy is otherwise usually wearing?
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I will add that I have seen two good examples of 3D conversion (Titanic and Wizard of Oz). I was very impressed.
But when it looks like crap, I will "always" say that, too.

That's what I thought about Lucy's hair. It doesn't look real. (Of course it isn't, but it doesn't look like Maureen O'Hara or Rita Hayworth.)

Fine, let them show it to a modern audience, viewers who never saw it before. And what are they going to see? They sure aren't going to see what it was. that's the damn shame of it all.

Red is a very hard color to colorize, because it never quite looks right when it's over gray tones behind it (from the B&W image), which desaturate the red and make it muddy, and when you lighten the gray tones you lose detail in the image in order to gain saturation. So it's a game of "more color" vs. "more detail."
I designed the DVD menus for four Universal classic box sets (Marlene Dietrich, Shirley Temple, Carole Lombard, and Gary Cooper) where I was required to colorize old photos for each of the menu screens. Even though the films were all in B&W, all marketing materials (menus, inserts, cover art) had to be colorized to lure more buyers.
I have no idea if it worked or not, but I spent a lot of time colorizing old movie photos for those jobs.
