I just got a last minute ticket to see an off-B production of Marvin Hamlisch's 1980's musical "Smile" on Saturday. I adore the movie (1976), but have never seen a stage production.
It's a musical, it's a pageant, it's $30 ... excited!

that event has SOMMS written all over it. Enjoy!
Addy - loved your comments on the MB re: Menagerie.
Happy WICKED day peeps!

Addy, I thought for certain you'd be at Wicked tonight? Has it really been 10 years?!
Bluemoon, any sign of your mug?
SOMMS, is that the staged reading of Smile someone wrote about on ATC?
Happy Hump Day Adults! I cannot wait to hear details about tonight.
Busy but lovely week so far. Dinner last night with the friend I went to Scotland with (she is in town for a conference). New restaurant in Westwood discovered. Taking my boss out today for his BD lunch. Trick or Treaters coming to our offices tomorrow from the local grade school we support. Other than the actual work, grand times all around.
SOMMS, wasn't smile a made for TV Move, or a real movie?
It's FREEZING in my house. I can't wait for the heat to be in. They promised by tonight I will have heat.
Yes, Dottie, that's how it hit my radar. Although it's not exactly a staged reading according to the reviewer; more of a mini musical with 18 performers in all their pageant splendor.
AND Happy 23rd Birthday to Junior.
Mornin'
SoMMS, I saw SMILE while it was in previews. Unlike most people at the time, I enjoyed it. It wasn't brilliant, but I remember being entertained by it.
I'll refrain from commenting about the mainboard fracas, although it pains me that I didn't see what everyone else is seeing in that production, and I'm absolutely mortified that neither did Muscle... (although I'd like to think my reasons are far more intelligently formed than his...)
Oh, and Moony: how 'bout we change the role of the murdered father to murdered mother and cast Rath for a brief, gory flashback sequence? And then Debra Monk can play the principal.
ETA: New restaurant in Westwood? Do tell, YWiW!
It was actually a theatrical release, You. It disappeared faster than cake in front of Moony. I actually saw it at a theater and then later once or twice on TV. A contestant at Miss America last year (in the top ten) sang "Disneyland" for talent.
I like this VW Car-Net thing. It's like On Star, but their own service. They give you 6 months free and then you can pay a month or yearly fee. If you're in an accident and your airbag is deployed it sends them a message and they send help right away. Kind of like "help I've fallen and can't get up" without having to press a button. If you're in an unfamiliar place and are looking for a particular drug store or fast food place they can send you a signal right to your GPS. You can hit another button for road side assistance. I like that they give you 6 months free to see if I use it.

Mooney - I caught that - hilarious!
My friend was the Wizard on and off for years, I have enjoyed his Wicked posts the last few days.

Dottie, I really really wanted to be there - and even saw that tickets were available as of last week - but I have a work/dinner commitment that I absolutely cannot change tonight. It pains me.
Deet, your thoughts are FAR more fully developed than muscle's! I can assure you!
Congrats on the new car, Boobs!
Somms, will look forward to your reviews.
YWIW, glad you're having a grand week!
Moony, is there any chance we can plan a visit to see the show together?!?
Hiya, brd. Hope things are grand in the Windy City today.

It is affiliated with the Hotel Palomar, one of the Kimptom boutique hotels on Wilshire Blvd. Not in the heart of Westwood, but close to the action. It was pretty relaxing and a nice evening.

Yes! And, they deliver my drinks without asking!
Do you all hear from RoadCase and Mom's daughter?

I like that, Brd!
Thanks, YWiW -- next time we're in L.A., let's you, me, J2 and Lane go!

Brd - yes, on Facebook. Roadcase has written a beautiful series of essays on his journey through this past year without Mom. He's a terrific writer - poignant and eloquent.
He truly is a gifted writer.

Back in the day I would find him on-line while he was literally on the "road" - that was before cancer. Also, a time before FB which killed BWW,

Oh dear - sounds horrible. I'm so sorry for him.
Addy! We usually don't get a break in the days at the same time! Perk up, lady - you have yet another night on the town tonight!
