When I mentioned libraries earlier in the thread, I was referencing the love of my life - I am an information junkie! And looking back on it, reading GEOGRAPHIC for the content was part of what established my 'one world' view. Besides that, I was a FIEND for those maps - I had them all, and would sit and go over them for hours - which led for awhile to my work as a cartographer.

The most traumatic thing happened to me in the 5th grade...Marion refused to take my box of Valentine Day's candy that I bought for her.
Damn, I swore I'd never do group therapy!
Made even more traumatic by my mother driving me over to her house and taking the friggin box of candy to Marion's parents and asking them to take the damn thing.
I still cringe!
the maps were fabulous! I kept them all, too!!
(and a 'one world' view is the view that will keep us all moving in the right direction!)
Jose - what a nightmare!!
in elementary school we all had to put valentines in everyone's little desk mailboxes...you couldn't leave anybody out.
of course, my favorite valentines went to my best friends, and I would frequently write a witty 'you stink' and not sign my name to the bullies...
I remember in 5th grade - a boy in my class asked me over for a playdate.
well - at that point I was in the stage of my life where boys played with boys and girls played with girls, and you wouldn't dream of mixing it up.
I was mortified when my Mom made me go - and even more horrified when he suggested that we ride bikes around the neighborhood - because that meant that everyone would see us together.
In the end, I had a really fun time...but it took me forever to admit it to my Mother!

I skipped the valentine thing - always the enigmatic one.
Completely different - I remember when HBO started. My aunt and uncle got it, and I always wanted to go to their house because of it.
I don't even remember when HBO started...because my parents didn't get cable for years...I think they tried to keep it from us!!
Was it all just movies in the beginning? or, were there original shows?

Just movies as I recall - and 'R' rated ones at that - quite the deal for someone who wasn't allowed to watch SOAP at home
...which is why my parents didn't let us know about it, I'm sure!
do you all remember air raid drills in school?
not just fire drills, but the ones where we had to go to an area with no windows (usually the hall) and sit facing the wall with our arms/hands over our heads...
and fallout shelters - my parents made sure we knew where they were - from those signs posted on buildings designated as such.

At home, we really didn't do much of the TV thing - and didn't have cable as long as I lived there. In my adult life, I didn't even have a TV for over 10 years - just read about what everyone was watching - still don't think I missed much
we did the TV thing, but also played lots of games.
I always liked being the banker in Monopoly!
Although - I didn't have a TV when I first graduated from college - for probably about 4 or 5 years. I know I didn't miss much...I was having too much fun living in New York!

As a junior high schooler in the early 60s, the big thing was NBC's "Saturday Night at the Movies" at 9pm on Saturday, what else.
The intro was a video montage of the light in the Times Square movie theatres.
It was the first place to see great prints of the long closed films...cut up with commercials.

No air raid drills here - just plenty of fire drills. I always had to be the man on the horse in Monopoly! We also liked Clue.
I remember that!
It was a big thing to be able to see movies on TV!
I liked being the dog in monopoly.
And I hated it when my sister got Boardwalk or Park Place first...I was very competitive about winning that game!
I loved Clue, too.

Absolutely on the Saturday night movies! Sunday for Disney was also where I first saw alot of their old stuff - like THE GNOME-MOBILE
I loved Disney on Sunday...when Walt would open the show!
Anybody remember Pong? the start of gaming systems as we know them...
and Pac Man...?
I wasn't much into those games, but I remember when everyone went crazy for them.

Wow - we actually had one of those first home-vid games - was it Atari? I can't remember - didn't interest me much. My father was in computers, so he was intrigued.
it was probably Atari - they were one of the first.
A friend of my Dad's worked for the company, and sent us an Atari system. Which we never set up. To this day it sits in a box in the attic...

THAT'S probably worth something, NYadgal.
I've GOT to get some things done around here - it's WAY too easy to just sit here and let the mind float back
Have a great afternoon!
Stuff I WAS into - (briefly...and oddly...)...
I had a chemistry set that I loved - and a biology kit - that came in this metal 'case' and had glass tubes of things stored in a really smelly solution.
I LOVED it, and my mom was horrified when I would set it up on the kitchen table...
you too, DGrant!
ok - I'll throw this one post out there, and then I've got to go finish some chores, also...
Toe socks...
Velour...
Track shorts...
fashion disasters, all!! LOL

Air raid drills...yes I remember us all being herded into the gymnasium and crouching like that over the next younger classes with Seniors "on top" as it were.
tumbling mats...parallel bars...the medicine ball... I suddenly remember the wiff of all the stuff when our sweat came into contact with them...
Gouch pants. Omigosh. I DO remember those and the requisite boots.
Paisley prints were big for a nano-second too...
White lipstick.
