Once I got to be taller than my mother, she always said that was fine, cuase that's just all the further she could come from the floor with an uppercut.
How is it that my 4'10" mother had arms that could back hand you in the backseat and never miss??
The 4 of us would laugh when Mom tried to hit us because she never really hurt until she started to pinch instead..now that hurt !!! Today she'd probably be in jail for that. I'm thankful for all those whacks...it kept me in line...made me think twice before I did something.

The fact is, we never stepped out of line - we were raised with parameters - what a concept.
Oh come on folks happy mom memories. As BB said those smacks in the fanny kept us in line. I should know my mom was a Marine! (I kid you not!) My first words were Yes mam', no sir, please and no thank you!
Between my mother and the nuns, I am a saint!
This was the song they played at a club for me on my 21st Birthday...remember it???
MAKIN' IT
David Naughton
Makin' it, oo makin' it
I'm solid gold
I've got the goods
They stand when I walk
Through the neighborhoods
I'm makin' it
I've got the chance, I'm takin' it
No more, no more, Fakin' it
This time in life, I'm makin' it (ooo)
Makin' it
Hello uptown, Goodbye poverty
The top of the ladder is waiting for me
I'm makin' it,
I've got the chance, I'm takin' it
No more, no more fakin' it
This time in life, I'm makin' it (ooo)
Makin' it, makin' it
Listen everyone here
This coming year's gonna be my year
I'm as bad as they come
Number two to no one
I've got looks, I've got brains
And I'm breakin' these chains
Make some room now
dig what you see
Success is mine
'Cause I've got the key
I'm makin' it
(repeat chorus)
Trying to forget it Boobs but, yes I remember it!

Are we back to remembering songs again?
Remember "Roller Coaster" by The Ohio Players...and the rumor of the women in the background being electrocuted in the Studio. (There is a scream in background).
Remember the extended version of Love to Love You Baby by Donna Summer that went on for 17 minutes??
Yes Toronto, I remember it well....

DGrant...
The John Thompson Series. Omigosh. Yes yes yes! And I do remember the pounding lefthand and a sharp ya had to handle.
Wasn't the first song right hand only: "Here we go. Up a Road. To a birthday party" and the second song, left hand only: "Dolly, dear, Sand man's hear. You will soon be sleeping."
That second one, played with the left hand/lower notes always sounded a little sinister to me.
We used the thompson books and teh Schaum (?) series, too. Both had colored books for the different levels.
My sister used to try to drive us insane by playing "Fairies Court" with out the sharp... AAAAARGH
I played some Carole King and Bacharach stuff as I got more advanced. And I remember my teacher taping me playing "A Time for Us" on her reel-to-reel machine.

I remember that rumor Bobby.
How about Try Me I Know We Can Make It, another disco ditty that went on for 16 minutes
Good old Reel to Reel...we had my brother's girlfriend playing "Tie A Yellow Ribbon" on her organ (no jokes TB) on a Reel to Reel. My mother made us bring that machine to every family function so everyone could hear her play that damn song.
My lips are sealed Boobs
Bobby - "Are we back to remembering songs again?" - you made me laugh out loud!
This thread IS a little 'schizo', isn't it...from childhood to high school - from songs to books to fashion to decorating to cars to toys to being bad and good...no rhyme or reason to it. (That's what makes me love it!)
beacon1 - you have the most incredible memory for detail! I remember all those piano lesson books and songs!!
Speaking of which TB...my Mom thought that the GoGo's were singing.."I Love Lucille" not "Our Lips are Sealed".
Reel to reel...my tapes would always get tangled.
Remember the old movie projectors - and having to thread the film 'just right' so it wouldn't be too tight and snap - or too loose and get tangled.
Also - remember those view-finders 'toys' with the round disks that had 10 or 12 photos in them...and you would change the picture by pusing down on a button. Amazing photos of the Grand Canyon - and all other points of travel!

I had a Disney Viewfinder. One slide had "It's a Small World" which I loved and the 1st time I made it to Disney World I was so excited to finally see it in person and that was the one exhibit that was closed..ugh !!!

My parents used to sing alot on road trips. They still both burst into song often (luckily they have decent voices.)
Dad apparently used to sing me to sleep with "You are my sunshine" (I was the oldest, he wasn't worn out yet...) And, I understand that when my maternal grandmother launched into "Harbor Lights" I would wail and wail and wail.
I remember my folks singing "Beautiful Dreamer" some nights...
and this crazy "stuttering" song about "K-K-Katie, beatiful Katie. You're the only g-g-girl that I adore..." I have no idea what it's from... And "Yes, I have no bananas..." "Mairsey Doats, and Doesy Doats and Little Lambsydivey"...and "Would you like to swing on a star..." *sniffle*
And, mom sang in Melody Belles which was sort of like Sweet Adelines. She sang "bass" and to practice she'd make my sister and I sing soprano and alto respectively while she played our old upright piano. It had lovely wood carvings and had belonged to my grandmother. However, by the time we got it, the piano had been painted over in LEMON YELLOW paint by a cousin who had in their yellow-themed family room. My mother used to touch the carvings and shake her head...
Sorry to ramble...so many memories.

I loved singing on road trips (just hated doing it in front of friends when mom was carpooling...didn't think it was 'cool'...)
K-K-K Katie- another wonderful song from the past!
another 'clapping game' memory:
Oh jolly playmate,
come out and play with me...

My parents used to get up from the dinner table and break into a tango or a fox trot for no good reason and go sashaying across the living/dining room (split level) floor to our thunderous applause.
