we've actually had a number of clients who cancelled going to Athens -because of security fears - and opted for the trip to Bermuda instead.
The networks that have the Olympics - lately NBC - always take clients to the actual event, but they also provide another entertainment option going to someplace closer where people can participate in activities and not just watch the games...this year the alternate trip is to Bermuda.

NYadgal - yes, the russian couple - she went on to have a solo career a few years later.
Also, the Protopopovs - a little earlier - but breathtaking.
And skating will forever have Dick Buttons voice attached to it - much like the olympics and Jim McKay.
One thing I will NEVER understand is the judging system.
Remember when they had to do the compulsaries?
I love seeing old films of Dick Buttons skate...
Was anyone else annoyed during the last Winter Olympics when the judges 'reversed' themselves and awarded a Gold medal to the Canadian couple - Sale and Pelltier?
I felt sorry for the Russian couple who won it outright...

the unfortunate Russian pair was Godeeva and Grinkov. The current system I haven't even attempted to figure out. It's all so political anyway.
Remember the hurdler Edwin Moses who didn't lose a single race for over a decade of his racing career?
I found the name of the couple I was thinking of -
Ekatareena Gordiva and Sergei Grinkov.
(I'm sure I butchered the spelling...)
So sad.
DG - sorry, I didn't see your post...

Better to have two people post the info than none at all
Eric Hayden - speed skater.
Jim Nabor (NOT Gomer) - swimmer.
The 84 hockey team
Princess Anne in the equestrian events
Moses - yes, he had an amazing record!
And, who was that woman runner years ago who such a crybaby when she and someone else had a mishap? (so much for my memory tonight...)
editing message to add name -
Mary Decker (now Slaney).
Oh, Eric Hayden - he was such a star!
And, Dan Jansen - the drama/agony of his defeat, but the thrill of his victory!
Mary Deker Slaney? She was tripped by a South African runner by the name of Zola Budd

NYadgal - I think it was Mary something - that famous picture of her down on the track WAILING. Hard, I guess, to comprehend working so long and hard, only to have it vanish in an instant like that.
yes - that's it!
I remember people were so divided over whose fault it was. My opinion was that she ran into Zola Budd's path...but, of course, I was nowhere near there, so my opinion isn't worth a penny!
If I remember right. In this race the runners start out in their own track and then make their way to the inside of the track

Speaking of running, did either of you ladies read The Front Runner by Patricia Nell Warren?
I always ADORE the pomp and circumstance of the Olympics, and get so choked up (ok...I admit...I weep) when the flag is raised and the national anthem is played. Especially when it's for an American - although it's one time when I'm thrilled for any winner!
The Opening Ceremonies are always so hopeful - with the parade of athletes and the oaths they take - and the lighting of the torch. I pretty much just cry for the duration of the Games.
That one is somewhere in my pile to read
mom, I think you're right.
DG - no, I didn't. Do you recommend it?

the opening and closing ceremonies of the last winter games were gorgeous!
That was such a special Olympics. First after 9/11.

It's an OK read - came out in the late 70's - one of the first mainstream gay love stories - which was written by a woman (who later came out) For a long time, Paul Newman was going to star. One of those things that hollywood just wouldn't touch.
Another book from that time I loved was "A Time to Love, A Time to Mourn."
I myself loved the Sydney Games! Can't say much for the Salt Lake Games as Mitt Rommney ( The guy in charge after the scandle) is now my Govoner
oh, that book was so moving!
mom - people either loved or hated him...
I do give him credit for pulling together an incredible event. The atmosphere was so hospitable!

Hmmmmm - Mr. Romney - can't say he's one of my favorites. Do you live in Boston, mominator? Beautiful city, at least the parts of it I've seen.
