One injury. Shooter arrested.
Wonder if the shooter thought the Capitol police were part of the shutdown.

Posted: 10/3/13 at 3:02pmThe current report is: it was a result of the police shooting at a suspect in a car chase starting near the White House. He led the police to the road barriers near the Hill and tried to flee. He was then shot at. One officer injured. No news on the suspect.

The latest: Suspect was a female driver who exchanged words with security after being told to move her car. She hit a police car as she left, and a car chase ensued. "Use of force" was then authorized and she was shot at thus ending the chase. A young child was also inside the car.
Very, very strange.

BIG mistake by the cops. BIG one.
They claimed they didn't see a baby in the car?
And they could have shot her tires or radiator.
No need to kill this woman.

Posted: 10/4/13 at 10:55amFrom what I've read, she was shot once she got out of the car. But that leaves us with the same question: Was deadly force necessary?

I wouldn't say it's a BIG mistake.
I actually support deadly force when the POTUS and his family are involved. I don't support killing anyone, but the police were doing their jobs. Had there not been a policeman with a weapon, the car could've done a lot more damage.
If you don't want the police to have weapons, then vote to take them away.
(The London Police don't carry pistols, do they?)

Reg,
Use of deadly force is immediately authorized and "necessary" once a suspect has attempted to harm an officer of the law. In this case, she had rammed into a police car with officers inside while in reverse. She also drove away from the scene at high speeds with officers within the vicinity. The car became her weapon and I believe they had every right to use deadly force.

Liza, I understand (and agree) about the car. I'm just saying that once she stepped out of the no-longer-moving car, she was, essentially, unarmed. Of course, I have no idea if they thought she was armed, or if she charged at them or something.
I'm not accusing them of wrong-doing; I'm just saying I'd be curious to know exactly what happened after she stepped out of the car.

"I actually support deadly force when the POTUS and his family are involved. I don't support killing anyone, but the police were doing their jobs. Had there not been a policeman with a weapon, the car could've done a lot more damage. "
"Why don't you explain how the POTUS and his family were involved when he wasn't even there. anyway, she was not familiar with the area, and it's really easy to get lost around there. I don't know if she rammed into anything PURPOSELY. She saw she was surrounded by men with guns and as she and her BABY were in jeopardy, she wanted to get the hell out of there. Again, there was no need to KILL her. Just shoot the mother, and worry about the baby later, right?"

What the fvck are you talking about???? HUH? who said they didn't want police to have weapons. Get some reading comprehension skills why don't you.

This is the account of the incident in the NY Times:
The chase began at 2:12 p.m. when Ms. Carey, who was driving a black two-door Infiniti with Connecticut plates, tried to ram through a White House checkpoint at 15th and E Streets Northwest. “The guys ran to try to stop her, and she wasn’t going to slow down, so they jumped aside,” said B. J. Campbell, a tourist from Portland, Ore., who was standing near the White House. “One of the guys grabbed one of those little metal fence sections and shoved it in front of her, across the driveway. She hit the brakes slightly and tried to get around it on the right, but the guy shoved it in front of her again, to try to keep her in.”
Mr. Campbell said the woman “hit the gas, ran over the barricade” and hit the officer, who flipped onto the hood of the car and “rolled off into the gutter.”
“After she ran him down, she gunned it, and she just went screaming down Pennsylvania Avenue,” he said. “They were busy calling on their phones, on the radios. It was like poking a hornet nest. There were guys everywhere. I didn’t see anyone with their guns out, but they were sure busy.”
Despite attempts by uniformed Secret Service officers to get her to pull over, Ms. Carey sped down Pennsylvania Avenue toward the Capitol at speeds up to 80 miles per hour and drove through several red lights, law enforcement officials said.
Several minutes later, officers appeared to have the woman cornered in front of the western side of the Capitol facing the National Mall. But as officers, with their weapons drawn, approached Ms. Carey’s car, she rammed it into reverse.
Officers tried to dodge out of the way, but the Infiniti struck a police car and raced up Constitution Avenue, where it crashed into a barrier.
What occurred next was not clear. Ms. Carey managed to get out of the car, and was shot by several officers. According to a law enforcement official, she was not armed, and it was not known whether she presented an immediate danger.
The authorities took her to a hospital, and she was pronounced dead.

I was just thinking something similar to Jane.
Not a "big" mistake?
I guess a woman's life can be shrugged off and put in the "oopsies" file.

Posted: 10/4/13 at 3:27pm^ right. Sounds like she wasn't anywhere near the White House when they killed her. They needed several cops to shoot her, I see. To make sure she died.

Reports are coming out that the woman suffered from mental illness and post-partum depression. She apparently thought Obama was stalking her.
Another person with untreated mental illness meets a tragic end. Thanks Reagan!
Possible DC chase motive

Posted: 10/4/13 at 3:36pmWell, again per the Times, they found anti-psychotic medication in her home, so it sounds as though she was being treated. Obviously not successfully. It is a tragic story.

True but IMHO since Reagan mental health treatment in this country is a mess. Especially if your poor.
Ineffective treatment is just a bad as no treatment.
