No, I really can't picture it. If she was able to sing Clara in LITP, Maureen is a HUGE jump. And an alto part, and isn't she a mezzo?

Oddly enough, I can see it.

Nope, she's too cute and wouldn't give off that "OMG I want this woman in my bed!" vibe.

She looks too angelic to play Maureen. But hey, I am sure as an professional actress, she could pull it off. Isn't she a bit too short?

that's an extremely fun thought.
despite everyone else's response, since I find her to be a great actress, I think she could do the role wonderfully.
maybe something to break her away from the "cute" roles.

Im glad you liked the thought. I was just thinking about Celia...i bumped into her at a party, and she looked so "bohemian" she looked like Maureen to me. So i had to ask.

In my opinion, her voice doesn't suit the role, but acting-wise, she would be great.
There's a lot I am not certain of...

I would totally go see her do it. But I would watch her in pretty much anything. But I can actually see it.

The "it's called acting" argument is absurd. Just because someone is a good actor doesnt mean they are right for the part. They have to fit the bill as well as be able to act it.

drg, it's not absurd at all. My comment was in response to "she's too cute and wouldn't give off" the right vibe. That's a silly reason for someone not to be able to play the role of Maureen. First of all, the "too cute". Have you seen the actors who have played Maureen? Cuteness abounds - Maggie Benjamin, Cristina Fadale, Haven Burton, Tracy McDowell. Being able to "give off" a certain kind of vibe is the acting part. There may have been one or two lesbians, at the most, who have played the role. That doesn't mean that all of the others haven't been convincing in the role. So are you saying to "fit the bill", they have to actually be bisexual performance artists? Come on.

Actually, I think if someone is a good enough actor, they should be able to do pretty much anything if the role isn't pretty much the opposite of they're type.
Who knows, maybe Celia could play a kick ass Maureen.

I don't think she's sexy enough. I wouldn't buy her singing the opening lines to TAKE ME... in a million years.
She'd be a great CARRIE though. And probably a good Eponine in LES MIZ.

No, I am saying that she has to look right and be believable in the role, both of which I can confidently say she wouldnt. That doesnt mean she isnt a good actress, that just means the role is not right for her. Are you going to tell me that Patti LuPone can play Mimi aswell, I mean shes a great actress too...

Whether she can sing the role is one thing, whether she can act it is another. Like I said, my comment was in response to the "she's too cute" post. Whether she could pull off the 'look', whatever that is, is debatable. I don't know her well enough to be able to say. What I DO know is that I've seen lots of different actors play Maureen over the years, and they were definitely not of one type. Who have you seen in the role, drg? I'm curious. The Patti Lupone comment is just silly. She's neither the right age, nor the right ethnicity for the role of Mimi. It's not an accurate analogy to the original discussion.

I think I remember listening to her Jeff Blumenkrantz podcast and she said something like "she was an character actress trapped in an ingenue"?
That and before she was called in for Piazza she was the big belty kid at college. My memory may be wrong but I dont see any reason why she wouldnt be able to do it. However (again forgive my memory) she went on to say she didnt have a favourite role and enjoyed the privelege of creating roles in new musicals.

My friend Robert admitted to feeling very dirty after seeing Spelling Bee, because he had seen Celia as Petra in A Little Night Music years before and he had made several comments to people about wanting her in his bed.
I don't know about Rent, but I'd give her a shot. I like a certain amount of cuteness in Maureen.

Well I guess we're talking the difference between character actors and others. At 47 or 48 I still think Donna Murphy would me a kick ass Mimi.
Ok, if it were an all older cast, but in all other respects, chamelon actors I think could do something like that. REAL character actors.
Patti Lupone, as much as I admire her, I don't really consider a full character actress.
On the other hand, (I've never seen Celia's acting) I hate when actors get trapped in a certain mold because of the way they look.

I disagree with the idea that a good actor should be able to do any character. The casting needs to be choesive and coherent with staging and / or concept.
I think Meryl Streep is a great actress, but I wouldn't cast her as Tarzan, for example, as good as she could be.

As I said before, barring any MAJOR type difference. Tarzan is a man.
