The nominations come out this Tuesday, January 22 at 5:30 AM (Pacific Time)...
What would be your top (favorite) "surprise" announcement for a nomination?
Mine?
"Ratatouille" nominated as Best Picture
Second choice?
Helena Bonham Carter nominated as Best Actress for Sweeney Todd
Favorite Surprises:
"Michael Clayton", "Atonement", "Sweeney Todd", "Zodiac", or "Ratatouille" getting a nomination for Best Picture.
Amy Adams getting a Best Actress nomination for "Enchanted"
2nd Choices:
Tim Burton getting a Best Director nom.
"The Great Debaters" getting a Best Actor (Denzel or Forest) or Best Supporting Actress (Jurnee Smollett) nomination.
Well I assume you want surprises that could actually happen...not out of the ballpark such as HAIRSPRAY for Best Picture...or out of this world, such as Lindsay Lohan for Best Actress.
That being said, surprises that could actually happen:
-Ratatouille for Best Picture
-La Vie En Rose for Best Picture
-The Diving Bell And The Butterfly for Best Picture
Out of the ballpark:
-Andy Griffith for Best Supporting Actor (Waitress)
Out of the world:
-Adrienne Shelley for Best Original Screenplay (Waitress)
A surprise, by definition, is something unexpected.
This can be as realistic or unrealistic as you want it to be. I'd just like to know what you're really passionate about and rooting for... and if that's a Best Pic nom for "Hairspray," then so be it!
Amy Adams getting a nod for Enchanted.
Robert Downey Jr getting a Supporting Nod for Zodiac
Emile Hirsch for WILD. Every bit as affecting -- and difficult to achieve -- as Page in JUNO. (I think younger men have trouble than younger women breaking through with noms, i.e. Swank, etc.) I think he's likely in the 6th or 7th position, despite the SAG nom.
I loved the script of LARS, and since it got a WGA nom, I'm rooting for that. Some folks find it too twee.
INTO THE WILD for best picture and Emile Hirsch for best actor and Ratatouille too for Best Picture
hmm. I just saw Atonement last night, and I'd love if James McAvoy were nominated. Good performance. Would that count as a surprise? Unfortunately, my movie knowledge has really fallen by the wayside this year. I only saw something like five movies total.
Helena Bonham Carter for Best Actress.
Laura Linney receives a Best Actress nomination for The Savages.
Paul Dano receives a Best Supporting Actor nomination for There Will Be Blood.
Jennifer Garner receives a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Juno.
Adrienne Shelley receives a Best Original Screenplay nomination for Waitress.
Jason Reitman receives a Best Director nomination for Juno.
Completely unrealistic, but in my perfect little world Jennifer Jason Leigh would receive a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Margot at the Wedding.
Top three:
Jennifer Garner as Best Supporting Actress for JUNO.
Helena Bonham Carter as Best Leading Actress for SWEENEY TODD.
Marissa Tomei as Best Supporting Actress for BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD.
Others that would make me insanely happy:
Amy Adams as Best Leading Actress for ENCHANTED.
SWEENEY TODD as Best Picture.
Romola Garai as Best Supporting Actress for ATONEMENT.
And one that would never happen in a million years but that I'd love is: Meryl Streep as Best Supporting Actress for LION FOR LAMBS.
Jennifer Garner has still not convinced me she is a good actress. JUNO is a wee overrated.
The perf in that film belongs to Allison Janney.
Cheers to Julie Christie who deserves Oscar 2 for AWAY FROM HER.
Surprise noms:
1. Sarah Polley for directing AWAY FROM HER
2. Olympia Dukakis for Best Support Actress for the same film
3. Allison Janney for JUNO
4. Amy Adams for ENCHANTED
5. Laura Linney for THE NANNY DIARIES [she has already played the same part in THE SAVAGES]
6. The actor who plays Toby in SWEENEY TODD [if HBC is nommed it is to fill out the category]

Amy Adams for Enchanted.
James Marsden too. I know it'll never happen ever in a million years, I just thought he was so good.
the one i most want to see is Paul Dano Supporting Actor for ...Blood
I really don't think Helena deserves any nomination of any kind, for any of her work.
To date she has been nommed once for Best Actress for WINGS OF THE DOVE. She is a good actress and of course very funny with her cameos on ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS.
Check her out in A ROOM WITH A VIEW and a cameo in MAURICE.
My top choices are:
Amy Adams, Best Actress, ENCHANTED
Adrienne Shelly, Best Sceenplay, WAITRESS
Allison Janney, Best Featured Acress, JUNO
I think the most potential nominee is Amy because of her golden Globe nod. Cate Blanchett, eat your heart out!
Alos, if Helena Bone-In-Ham Carter is nominated, I'll be asked to be razored and meat pied. She was awful. The non-expressive Johanna was better. Hell, I could barely hear Helena. She could have been Toby for pete's sake!
ZODIAC for Best Picture. A very good, largely forgotten film.
I have to agree with the Linney nod for NANNY. She was the only thing in the film that worked, and she damn near pulled it along single-handedly, playing not the protagonist, but the force of antagonism. Miss Scarlett was blown off the screen by Linney.
For my money, the one thrilling win at this year's awards would be Christie. A movie star and actress who can still turn out extraordinary work. And she still looks like a ravishingly beautiful Julie Christie without having her face pulled apart as Katherine Helmond did in BRAZIL.
I fear the bias toward youth could create some sort of Hillary Swank syndrome and push Ellen Page forward. She's most effective, she's charming, as is the film, but please -- did anyone see Oprah pushing it this past week? She said it's UNMISSABLE. Enough already. It's a movie about a precocious pregnant teen. It's winning, it's sweet, but enough. It doesn't help the film, because it cannot support the weight of the accolate. Didn't we learn this with MISS SUNSHINE?
I wish someone would push Oprah off a cliff.
JUNO is a good film that is striking a nerve with young audiences but come on it is NOT a revolutionary performance or picture. I agree that Julie could be upset and not win since the film is already on DVD but on the other hand the Academy could give it to a safer actress like Keira Knightley.
I am afraid that if Julie wants the award she will have to do Jay Leno and the other chat shows to stand a chance. I think the older voters will go for her. She does deserve the award.
Any award nomination for the film Before the Devil Knows Your Dead. It was a terrific film that was overlooked this past year.
Would be great to have Albert Finney get a nod.
And a nomination for Andy Griffith.

Ditto "Before the Devil..." Sidney Lumet proved that at 80-something, he's got more talent in his little finger than many young directors. I'm still surprised that it was so forgotten about.
Of course, I could be biased because I live across the street from where the robbery was filmed.
Any nod for Waitress would be great. A nod for Jennifer Garner would be fantastic.
I agree. I am glad to see Film Forum is doing a Sidney Lumet Retrospective! They are showing many of his classic films in February. Including, Network, Dog Day Afternoon and Murder on the Orient Express.
