Glebby, they sound like the Carpenters, if there was more than just two Carpenters...

Posted: 10/26/06 at 11:49amIt is never to early for Christmas music. I started listening a little bit lately, but then I got my Carols for a Cure CD yesterday and it's all I've listened too. Now I have to get my guilty pleasure cd(NSYNC christmas albulm I just love it) out. Then before I know it a few radio stations will turn all Christmas all the time and I will be in heaven!!!

My personal favorite is Vince Guaraldi's A Charlie Brown Christmas. I always play it on Christmas morning. Makes me super happy.

I just LOVE it. "O Tannenbaum" just swings, you know?

Now if we're talking childhood nostalgia, for me it's "John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together". I mean, who can forget Miss Piggy singing "Christmas is Coming" or "The Twelve Days of Christmas"? Or "Figgy Pudding.....with bacon"....
And my favorite version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is still the one sung by Rolf the Dog.

I love the Muppets, but I'm actually not talking about childhood nostalgia. The Charlie Brown Christmas CD is brilliant in its own right. Vince Guaraldi's jazz piano work is just amazing. The musicianship if just off the charts. Love it!!!

Oh...I agree Erika! It's a great album, and one I own and play.
I tend to think of Charlie Brown Christmas as part of my childhood, and confess that I hadn't really watched it for a long time. I made a point of watching it last year, (partly because we had done a CB Christmas medley with the one group at school) and was surprised at how it's really a CHRISTMAS show. Not holiday, not all inclusive...CHRISTMAS. A show like that would never get on the air today, unless it was on a Christian station.
Not that I'm complaining. I'd much rather see a Christmas show, and a Hannukah show and a Kwanzaa show, than one show that just kind of mushes everything together.
Anyway.....to reiterate....Charlie Brown Chrismas and it's score....fabulous!

this is generally what I listen to around this time:
All I Want for Christmas Is You- Mariah Carey
Santa Claus got stuck in my Chimney- Ella Fitzgerald
Last Christmas- Wham!
Christmas Trumpets/We Wish You a Very Merry Christmas-Ray Anthony
Mama ga santa ni kiss shhita- Fukami Rika
The Nutcracker Suite- Les Brown & His Orchestra
Turkey Lurkey Time- Promises Promises
Santa Baby- Madonna
White Christmas- Tomizawa Michie
Mele Kalikimaka- Bing Crosby
(Everybody's Waitin' For) The Man With the Bag- Kay Starr
Little Saint Nick - The Beach Boys
Last Christmas- Tomizawa Michie (Sailor Mars)
Christmas Song- Weezer
Christmas Time- Christina Aguilera
"Santa Claus Got Stuck In My Chimney" is the dirtiest Christmas song ever - at least if you take it there.
-Adam Shankman.
"I haven't left this building since Windows 3.1!"
"Celebrating a birthday this week: Rene Descartes is 412! Do you know who he is? Then why are you watching this show? You could probably get into college and even get one of those job things. As for the rest of us; Amanda Bynes is 22! Yay!"

Yeah, I saw it recently and thought the same thing.
And Muppets rule!
For nostalgia, I love playing the "The Very Best of Bing Crosby Christmas." My parents had the old vinyl LP of this, and I'd play it every year while decorating the tree (my job, of which I was very proud). The Andrews Sisters and his voice together? Magic!

I love Last Christmas. Dexter Freebish has a good cover.
My favorite carol is the Carol of the Bells.

I was in Macy's last night (one of our Virginia Macy's - not the big one) and they were putting up all their Christmas decorations. The only thing missing was the music!
I'm looking for recommendations for instrumental CD's. I need to put together some music for piping into the reception area of the place where I work and I'd prefer instrumentals for that. I have Nutcracker and my favorite - George Winston's "December". Also (and don't laugh) a couple of Victoria's Secrets CD's. These are CD's of classical music piped into their stores during the holidays. They're really quite lovely.

Posted: 10/28/06 at 8:24amWow---they're behind in Virginia. Our Macy's here in Eastern PA has had them up for a good 2 and a half months now! I remember being at the mall just before school started, and this little boy, about 7 or 8, going "Mom, why are there Christmas things up? It's August!"

I always liked Nordstrom's take on this. As the stores and mall get all decorated for Christmas, Nordstrom's puts a sign in the doorway saying they believe in celebrating ALL the holidays - including Thanksgiving. So they won't be decorating for Christmas until Thanksgiving is over.
This is not such a good thing for the Nordstrom's employees though. They go in there on Thursday (Thanksgiving) night and do all the decorating. Friday morning the place looks like a winter wonderland.

See...that's how I feel...the Christmas season doesn't start until after Thanksgiving.
However, I was in Wegmans, one of our local grocery stores, and they had a sign that said basically this:
"Some people like to prepare for the holidays early, and some choose to celebrate the season in the moment. By providing holiday items now, we are giving our shoppers a choice."
I just found it interesting that they even felt the need to put up a sign. I mean, gee, it was considerate!

I love The Carpenters Christmas Album and Christmas with Maureen Mc Govern.
It's full on Christmas here in Australia from the 4th of November, the decorations are up (in some stores already), the music is playing and Santa is there for photos.

I received two Christmas CD's that I ordered from Footlight. I'm playinig them both through to check for defects. They are both replacements of CD's that were damaged by a careless son.
One is Rita Ford's Music Box collection. If you're never heard this you are in for a treat! She has a collection of 19th century music boxes that play stunning reditions of Christmas favorites. It's a wonderful recording. Absolutely beautiful sounds.
The other is Holiday Pops by Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops. It's more contemporary, by the calypso rendition of "Mary's Boy Child" and the last number on the disc, called "Merry Christmas" are worth the price of the CD.

I have both of the CDs that Dollypop mentioned and I also think they are terrific, especially the music box music.
I just ordered a CD called Winter Dreams by Native American musician R.Carlos Nakai. It appears to be all the standards played on a cedar flute, guitar, lyre, and harp guitar. I have his Tribal Winds and it is terrific "background" music, so I have high hopes.
