I love answers that begin and end with "well yes"....such validation.
-- I know a lot of gay men who didn't like BBM.
--I know a couple of gay male voters on the Academy. Neither voted for BBM, though they liked it.
-- Whatever film wins the majority of the acting branch's vote wins Best Picture. End of Story
Jodie Foster, Shirley MacLaine, and Denzel Washington all called CRASH the best film of the year last December. Clear evidence that the film was going to have wild appeal in the Academy. I don't care about precursors. Truth is too much emphasis has been put on them. Pre cursors are influenced by reviewers. Reviewers don't make up the voting body of the Oscars.
This is a perfect example of how unsubstantiated bantering and whining from the gay community about insignificant issues makes the public at large take their debate on serious issues less seriously.
As others have said - people voted for CRASH - not against BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. Should we now say the AMPAS is anti Semetic because its majority of members are Jewish and thus should have voted for MUNICH?
I empathize that BROKEBACK meant a lot to a lot of members of the gay community, but frankly, I'm tired of feeling like if you you are gay and didn't believe this was the greatest film since CITIZEN KANE you are somehow a traitor to your "people".

zepka-
All I'm saying is that a film with Brokeback's worldwide buzz and clout would probably have the odds in its favor.

"i honestly don't see this as hollywood being homophobic."
This is just an incredibly naive statement. I mean, Hollywood is a place where to this day a leading man cannot be openly gay for fear that his career will be ruined. Gays still have to be Will or mostly Jack - good for comic relief, asexual and hopefully useful to the straight people around them.
BBM offended so many because Ennis and Jack were young, strapping, masculine men who fell in love. BBM was not a mainstream movie but was an independent (it won the Independent Spirit Award the night before the Oscars) made on a low budget. It never had huge Hollywood support at all, but built its buzz based upon critical and audience reaction.
and all i'm saying is that it obviously didn't have enough of something to win... crash had it.
Michael Bennett - Thank you.
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN should have won. End of story.
Good-night.
Other than Oscar votes, I can't imagine what else the movie was lacking.
thank you for that explanation, Pseudolus. about the difference between Hollywood itself and the academy members.
I still think that almost every single academy member saw BBM and didn't think it was as good as Crash.

"86: One could say the same for the Screen Actors' Guild awards... As their best ensemble award usually predicts the best picture. And it did not go to BM. It went to Crash. "
This is factually incorrect. The SAG ensemble award doesn't usually match the best pic - last year Sideways won. Hell The Birdcage won the SAG ensemble award.
thank you Pseudolus for opening my eyes to how much i don't know
Brokeback Mountain didn't win.
End of story.
Good night.
Foster, with all due respect, you do know of what you speak. I memerly said I was sick of the discussion. I did not deride anything but perhaps the fact that there was yet another thread saying very similar things again.
In fact, I edited my post before I even posted it in order to remove any snarky or obnoxious comment regarding assumptions and sterotypes of those in hollywood.
I understand that many people are upset about Brokeback losing, and that many people have emotionally vested themselves with the movie.
You must also undestand that there were multiple posts on this topic and no need for yet another thread. And, there are implied assumptions about those who may have prefered Crash to Brokeback.
I have had plenty of nice things to say about Brokeback, and recognized not only its artisic merit, but that many legitimately believe it deserved best picture. Unfortunately, those who have so connected with Brokeback have not shown others the same respect.

Addy, you're gloating... and it's ugly.
Exactly, Pseudolus.
Luscious: That wasn't gloating. That was a statement of fact. You're being sore. That's ugly.
No. I am NOT gloating.
I just refuse to accept the statements that have been made in this thread and others. Some of which have been personally insulting.
I would have loved an even discussion about the movie, but people who felt it lost the Academy Award because it is a gay movie have been unwilling to enter into such an open discussion.
I am NOT gloating.
AMEN, Michael Bennett.
too many people are being sore here
GET OVER IT. ITS AN AWARDS SHOW FOR MOVIES. THAT IS ALL. NOTHING HAS BEEN TAKEN AWAY FROM BROKEBACK LOSING THE BIG AWARD... IT'S STILL GOING TO BE REMEMBERED FOR WHAT IT IS.

"I still think that almost every single academy member saw BBM and didn't think it was as good as Crash. "
Based upon your personal knowledge of each academy member? This is not likely. While I do believe the one thing left out is the West Coast thing, the acclaim has always been on BBM's side, certainly with critics and audiences:
Metacritics score for CRASH: 69 (generally favorable)
Metacritics score for BBM: 87 (universal acclaim)
Rottentomatoes score for CRASH: 77%
Rottentomatoes score for BBM: 86%
Box Office for Crash: $53 million
Box Office for BBM: $78.8 million and counting
With BBM on a Schindler's List role of awards before not winning the Oscar, this year will be known as the "Brokeback Exception."
My assumption that almost every academy member saw BBM is just as accurate if not more than those who are assuming that lots of them refused to see it because of their homophobia.
The amount spent on marketing BBM compared to CRASH is trifold - CRASH was a substantial success based on a 7 million dollar budget. Its also done well on dvd and is getting a re-release this Friday.
But at any rate, not of that matters - Oscar voters don't vote based on statistics.

"thank you Pseudolus for opening my eyes to how much i don't know"
No problem - maybe next time you will actually teach yourself about the subject about which you are posting, before posting things such as "Hollywood isn't homophobic."
i was reminded. anyone see Capote? i haven't, but what's Philip Seymore Hoffman's character like? wait, he's... GAY?!?! OH MY GOSH WHO LET HIM WIN?!?!
and how about Felicity Huffman? man, she lost cuz her character is a transexual. i can't believe they even NOMINATED her!
Thanks Michael B
