Last night I had the pleasure of attending a screening of "Memoirs Of A Geisha" followed with a Q & A and meet and greet with the cast and director. The movie is not only beautiful . You will be totally engrossed in this world. Ziyi Zhang should become a huge star after this. I have not read the book so I have no comparisons to make. But the movie on its own is brilliant. Rob Marshall will definitley be a candidate for a best director oscar. Michelle Yeoh who is considered Japans equivalent of Meryl Streep will blow you away. GO.

Snaps to you Dame. I've been very impressed with everything I've seen from this film - including the performances of the child actors. I hear the dancing is just excellent.
Just an FYI: Michelle Yeoh is Malaysian.

Here are over 40 photographs, many of them new (well, not to Dame).
How beautiful are those costumes?

Posted: 11/15/05 at 12:25pmThey were beautiful. And the cinematography is also excellent. But don't assume this is one of those movies that is just pretty to look at. The story and the world in inhabits are spectacular.

Good point. I read the book and was even more compelled by what was happening to Sayuri, Hatsumomo, Pumpkin, etc. than the detailed descriptions of how the kimonos were put on...
Of course I only read the book once five years ago. This film should be a fresh experience for me.

Posted: 11/15/05 at 12:36pmI'm very much looking forward to this, and was particularly heartened by your glowing words on Michelle Yeoh, who I think is truly fabulous (and robbed of an Oscar nomination for Crouching Tiger). I always assumed Gong Li's role (Hatsumomo) would be the "Oscar Bait" role.

That's the first real word I've heard on Pumpkin. She seems somewhat marginal in the film (according to other reviews) but was definitely a memorable character in the book. Not that this is a problem. It isn't.
I think if this keeps up with critics playing favorites between Gong Li and Michelle Yeoh for supporting actress, both will get nods.

What will be interesting is if an Asian can actually WIN an Oscar this year. We've heard so much press in years past about AMPAS refusal to acknowledge black and latin actors, but we never hear anything about the fact that an Asian actress hasn't won an Oscar since Miyoshi Umeki in 1957 (and I believe she's the only one).

This is one of the most compelling, interesting, and educational novels. Still on my top 10 list of favorite contemporary novels (and I read a lot of books!).
I am very much looking forward to the film...glad to hear it's a keeper so far.
