Are there any dancers on here. Professional or non-pro? If there are any that have done shows or went to broadway auditions....i'd love to hear your stories..
But mainly to all dancers, Where do you buy your dancewear? Anyone know of any cheap/discount wear online? Besides Discount dance or dance distributors.

My strong point is ballet/pointe, but over the last bunch of years, I've done tap, jazz, Irish, and character. I buy most of my dancewear from this great dance shop called Ms. DanceWear, but I sometimes go to a Danskin outlet that's 1/2 hour away from where I live.
And I absolutely love Gaynor Minden pointe shoes. They're my favorite brand EVER.

Hey...I'm not really a professional...I just do it because I love it so much...
I get alot of my dance stuff from justforkix.com or allaboutdance.com, if that helps. If you live anywhere near a Danskin outlet...you should go. There's one in Clinton, CT, which is like 40 minutes or so from where I live. It's pretty good.

Hi! I've been dancing for ten years and have taken jazz, tap, ballet/pointe, lyrical, modern and character. Discount Dance and Dance Distributors are both great websites; I've ordered leotards and shoes from there before. If it's your first time with a certain type of shoe, you should probably go to a store first (especially for pointe!)
If there are any dancewear stores near you, try those- they usually carry leotards, etc. from companies that don't otherwise sell to the public.

Posted: 1/16/05 at 10:16pmI'm a Jazz/Tap dancer and I buy all my expensive stuff that leaves me dirt money at Capezzio or however you spell it. But, I will say the quality is the best...you pay for what you get. I've done a few bway/off dance auditions.. I've done dance show cases in NYC the last one Savion Glover hosted. I'm not "Fosse/ Radio City" Material but, I've got it down lol.

hey everyone! great there's dancers out there. Been dancing for 7yrs. I take ballet jazz and hiphop. love tap but no time for classes..though i took 1 class at bdc when i was off..and loved it! Um i may be the worst possible ballet girl there is on the face of this earth. I've spared my teachers by not going on pointe haha.
Yes normally i order from Discount dance but i just want some warmup shorts and don't feel like paying 7 dollars shipping for 14dollar shorts. I may just end up going to capiezo around here or so. I went to the 1 in the city and i was not going to pay 30dollars.
I love hearing success dance stories. I wish i could major in it but alas I really don't think I would make it. It's my passion but it's also a very tough business
How were the highland dance shows? Basically anyone performing interests me lol. I know someone who is a Rockette across america and I adore her..so lucky!
Has anyone been to any auditions on broadway?

Posted: 1/16/05 at 10:32pmI do jazz, modern, ballet, and hiphop; been working on it for 8 years or so. And I'm currently taking a pilates/gymnastics course to become more flexible. But Broadway-wise, I've auditioned for Rent a couple of times, Hairspray twice, and Avenue Q once. I received a callback for Rent and Hairspray, but I wasn't able to attend because of conflicts with school. But, as you know, everything happens for a reason. And I'll just re-audition later, when I have more time on my hands. PM me if you want details and whatnot, I just don't feel like going on and on with this one. Haha.

Posted: 1/16/05 at 10:35pmI hate all of the people on this thread. I can't dance! I've tried. I got kicked out of ballet when I was 5 for looking in the mirror too much and I'm really uncoordianted now. I wish I could dance like the people here probably can!

Posted: 1/16/05 at 10:50pmmy ballet teacher at nyu gave me an A for trying.. It's weird how in Jazz i am well holded but in ballet, I am ungraceful and I was always the one being called out for my ribcage being somewhere over the rainbow.. don't feel bad. I cried almost EVERYDAY in ballet class. It eventually became a class joke and at the end when we got to do our own dances, I made fun of myself in my piece.

that was really sad. wow you got to dance at nyu..that's awesome!
Yea its funny i took a hiphop class at bdc and the 1st comment i got from the teacher was "loosen up ballet girl" haha it seems i suddenly became graceful and had a flat back but when im in ballet im the worst haha

Ah, to be graceful...and have any dancing ability whatsoever.
If one has no ability whatsoever, what type of dance would you suggest that one take to try and gain some sort of ability?

I'm a dancer. I've taken tons of classes. I hope to be a shoe-in for CATS someday.

i say start off with jazz. although ballet is the basis(like the foundation). so maybe do ballet. lol.
to EVERYONE-If there was 1 show you could be an ensemble member of that you think you could possibly get, what would it be?
I'd say the ensemble in the Radio City Xmas Spectacular. I saw it on the 8th and was like dying to be in it haha. I would've said rockette but i have no tap experience. If not that then Wickeds dancers..it's a lot of lifts and such but its not 42nd street so i would try for it lol.
I almost went to the fame audition, but i was seeing rent and underaged. That by far was my dream until it closed.

Posted: 1/17/05 at 10:01amI only WISH I could dance. I do take dance lessons but only because I have to for theatre. I take tap, jazz, and acro and will probably start ballet again. And it is never too late to start. I started when I was 14 (I'm 17 now) because I had just quit gymnastics. I'm improving all the time but I will certainly never be a "dancer".

Lol. I did it for 12 years. It's craziness! 25 hours a week at least. I quit because of this stupid thing called theatre that I just had to be passionate about.
#23re: Dancers..are there any here?
Posted: 1/17/05 at 11:20amlol there are so many things i wish i did and i have so many regrets. i always wanted to do gymnastics, swimming(did it over the summer almost every year but never was on a team), ice skating, soccer(loved that, never was on a team), and cheerleading hahah.

I've been dancing since I was 17... oh geez, I've been dancing now for 20 years. Yeah... I'm old.
For those of you who would love to dance but say you're terrible... TAKE A DANCE CLASS! Once you are in the adult drop-in classes, no one really cares how you dance. I'd suggest starting off with a beginning ballet class for terminology and good technique. Don't worry if you're good or not, you're just building the foundation. Then you can start taking jazz, tap, etc. Paraphrasing from "All That Jazz", you might not end up being a great dancer, you might not end up being a good dancer, but you'll definitely end up being a better dancer.
As for auditions... back in my early 20s and still had dreams of being a dancer for life, I auditioned for the European casts of CATS and West Side Story. It was fun...
