Here's a Thorpe still from the first six weeks of filming. Judy's hair is blonde, the Witch has her hair down and no prosthetic chin. Judy's dress may be the one Debbie is selling (I can't tell), but the shoes clearly are not the Arabian ones. They are the final design.

I found the still I was referring to with Judy and Ray. It is in the making of documentary hosted by Angela Lansbury, in the "Directors" chapter. It also shows Judy wearing the dress, or one very similar, with Margaret Hamilton while looking out the castle's window, assuming probably when she's watching Toto run off.

I tried to do a screen grab but it seems to be protected somehow as it just comes out as a gray and white checkerboard pattern. But it does appear as if the dress in the collection was the style used while the movie was under Thorpe's leadership.

I just bought one of the catalogs. Even though I can't own anything being auctioned I think the catalog will be something I'll love having forever.

haha, Jordan.

I hope she invested in a lot of Febreze.

But, on a serious note, she basically bought it at various auctions or somebody else donated it to her collection.

She was probably one of the first to realize that there was a serious interest in preserving these types of items as the studios started selling off their stock in the 70s in an effort to make money (both through the auction and by being able to reduce their own operating costs by decluttering the warehouses, etc). Some of this stuff would definitely have been lost if it weren't for her. I can only imagine how much it has cost her to store and preserve this collection over the years.

^ Exactly. Actually, someone from I guess around my area ended up finding the crystal ball from The Wizard of Oz in an junkyard surrounded by other stuff from an old Hollywood prop house. I think that person sold it and donated the money.

I actually can't tell with the front of her foot in a shadow like that. I can definitely see they aren't the Arabian shoes, though.

Jordan, Debbie bought some of her stuff at the big MGM auction and some of her stuff "pre-auction," just like Michael Shaw did. He "acquired" his pair of ruby slippers before the big sale, and they were in the best condition of all (I saw them up close, so I can attest to them being pristine). And unfortunately, they were stolen a few years ago and have never been recovered.


EDIT: Marianne2--I love that crystal ball story! Wow, and he told his mom she could retire now. I wonder how much he got for it.

If you pull out the 50th Pictorial book, you can see other stills from the Thorpe era, and there's a still right at the start of the chase and you can clearly see the bows missing.

It should also show up in the picture of Dorothy and Scarecrow in the original cornfield set.

I bought the catalog and it's due to ship out tomorrow or Friday.

This auction is one of the many for the entire collection. There will be quite a few to sell off everything.

Jordan, we should totally get Debbie on that show. I'd love to watch Carrie Fisher tear up when she says, "Mommy can't find the kitchen table anymore."

I'm not sure I know what's missing, having seen the bulk of her collection in Vegas. The only one that instantly came to mind was her own red "party dress" from The Unsinkable Molly Brown." It's her favorite role, her Oscar-nominated performance, and the "big costume" she wears in that movie.

But other than that ... I can't see anything siginificant missing from this sale.

Actually, the ones I saw (which she wore in the film) were size 5 1/2 A.
