Do you think Meryl Streep will get nominated for awards for playing Miranda in the Devvil Wears Prada? I thought she was amazing!
I also thought Anne Hathaway was great, but some critics disagreed.

I'm going to try and talk Ivan into taking me tonight, but he got mad at me earlier, so I don't know if he'll be up to it.
I haven't seen it yet, but I think I'm going to miss Miranda's British accent.

I know it sounds like a broken record, but I think she truly is the best actress alive. Her range, and her ability to transform into nearly any character, is unsurpassed in my eyes.
She's brilliant in this movie. Brilliant. It is astonishing to see what Streep does with such a small part. In lesser hands, the role of Miranda Priestly could have been an over-the-top monster, and no one would have given her a second thought. Streep manages to make this potentially one-note character layered, meaningful, and hilarious.
Streep never once raises her voice, which is a wonderful choice because it gives the audience the idea that Priestly is simply too good to waste her breath on others. There is also a scene in which Miranda appears with no makeup. Streep uses this scene to let let the audience - and Andrea - in on what may really be troubling her. She then immediately puts her guard back up, and accomplishes this without ever calling attention to it.
Hathaway is also great, and very underrated in this role. The character of Andy is the one that we follow from beginning to end. What resonates with me the most about this story is that, through all our heroine goes through, she still maintains her dignity and sense of self. Hathaway pulls this off perfectly. Stanley Tucci and the extremely watchable Emily Blunt are also priceless, and give their roles far more depth than expected.
That said, I will be very disappointed . I'm sure that there will be many great supporting performances, but how many of them will be this perfectly crafted and memorable?

Posted: 7/7/06 at 8:00pmIt's true, and all because this isn't some epic dramatic story. Also the fact that it came out in the summer probably won't help, but seriously, Streep should be recognized for this performance, not so much for the character itself, but for her ability to BECOME the character on every single level so perfectly.

Posted: 7/8/06 at 12:51amWin awards? If you're talking Golden Globe for Best Actress In A Comedy then maybe. But Oscar? No shot. Not that type of role and there will be too much competition for this type to be considered.

Meryl is amazing in this movie, and she is probably the one thing that keeps it from becoming overly bland and formulaic. She's fascinatingly horrible (yet sympathetic) as Miranda Priestly.
However, I agree with CapnHook that, while she may get a Golden Globe, I can't see this as being the type of movie that's given Oscar consideration. Then again, they could surprise me (they did with Renee's nomination for Bridget Jones's Diary).

But Oscar? No shot. Not that type of role and there will be too much competition for this type to be considered.
If Marisa Tomei, Jack Palance, Johnny Depp, Diane Keaton, and many others can get nominated - and, at times, win - for comedic genius, then so can Streep. Besides, there's usually at least one summer film that gets major Oscar buzz later on. Could this be it?

Johnny Depp deserved the nod and POTC *WAS* the type of film that can get Oscar nods.
Just because a film is a comedy doesn't mean it's not Oscar worthy.
However, Devil Wears Prada is borderline. Streep COULD get attention, but there will be too much competition for a nod in the end.

That choice is one of the things that stood out to me as well! LOVED HER! LOVED THE MOVIE!
OMGoodness, that last word "GO!".... could she be any more brilliant?

He absolutely did deserve the nod, no one's denying that. But, I certainly didn't expect him to actually get one. It's incredibly rare that someone gets nominated for a fantasy/adventure/action movie of that kind.
Just because a film is a comedy doesn't mean it's not Oscar worthy.
I never said that... I said that if others can get nominated for brilliant comedic performances, then Streep can as well.
However, Devil Wears Prada is borderline. Streep COULD get attention, but there will be too much competition for a nod in the end.
I think she'll get one. She deserves it, and I will be very surprised if a supporting performances comes along that's as perfectly done as this one. Still, I could be wrong. In any case, Streep has never gone five years without getting nominated. Her last nod was in 2002, so I think it's about time for her next one. :)

#18re: Devil Wears Prada: Meryl
Posted: 7/8/06 at 5:12pmI think she is a lock for a nomination for two reasons: she was brilliant in the film and she is Meryl Streep!
#19re: Devil Wears Prada: Meryl
Posted: 7/8/06 at 5:32pmI agree with the voice thing. Since Streep's character never barks, it makes it seem that it's quite possible that she could bite.

broadway86 - My comments were in general. Wasn't trying to prove a point towards you personally, LOL.
Alas, she still won't get one. Look at DREAMGIRLS alone for competition. Two candidates - one of which I would say is a lock if the film lives to its promise.

Posted: 7/9/06 at 1:23pmStreep certainly holds major buzz right now--and the biggest of released films (which, yes, doesn't mean that much just yet). I will give this--from what I have seen online, it's *possible* she gets a nom for Prairie. But, it does seem inevitable that she gets her 14th deserved nomination.
