Well, Do You?
If so, she would have joined the ranks of Tom Hanks, Spencer Tracy, Luise Rainer, Katherine Hepburn, Jason Robarbs (is that all?) who have won consecutive Academy Awards.
She won for Mary Poppins in 1964, and I think that really hurt her chances. I also think that she was better in The Sound of Music.
I have the DVD to Darling, which is the film that Julie Christie won for that year. However, I must admit that I Have Not finished it (I usually watch at night). Anyways, from what I have seen, I would have given it to Julie Andrews. Though, Julie Christie was good and Darling is a nice film to see the 'swinging' '60's. But Julie Andrews would have had my vote.
Well, just to be a naysayer, I'd choose the unnominated Vivien Leigh for Ship of Fools, but yes, I agree the Christie performance is less than impressive--but she was very hot that year and Andrews had already won before.
Of course she should have one. I said in another post that it is the performance of the decade, IMO. Anyone could have done Julie Christie's role, but all things equal, THE SOUND OF MUSIC just wouldn't be the classic it is today, with any other actress.

I love Julie Andrews, really I do, but I have never understood her winning for Mary Poppins.
The author of the book ALTERNATE OSCARS also picks Andrews over Christie.
But you didn't answer the question.
Who does he pick over Hanks (both years)?
lol
Well, I thought I had in the previous post, but I doubt I would have voted for Andrews--I'm not a fan of the film either, but that doesn't mean I think neither has merit. I would've probably voted for Eggar or Signoret.
I don't believe the book is current enough to include either Hanks win. I think it only goes to 1991--but I'll check it for you.
Actually, I was addressing that to SorryGrateful.

Oh, oops, I didn't know you were speaking to me. I do think her performance in The Sound of Music was much more Oscar-worthy and was wonderful. But I haven't seen any of her competition's performances, so it's a little difficult to make a fair judgment.

She made the hills come alive!
Of course she deserved an Oscar for the Sound of Music!
I will never understand why she didn't...

How many years ago was this? Let the dead bury thei dead.
Ummm... I disagree. I love Julie Andrews and think she was phenomenal is SOM, but - Julie Christie was wonderful in "Darling" and deserved to win. She captured that tortured soul and made it her own, and the movie wouldn't have been the same without her, either.
Also, you're forgetting Oscar's politics - Julie Christie was a product of the mod 60's, and she represented something very modern, very chic.

I'll go with the incredibly hot and sexy Julie Christie, at her searing peak (or even pre-peak), over the more-than-slightly square and prim Julie Andrews. Both Julies are good, and either could have rightfully won, but I think Christie was better. Of couse, this board is so musically oriented that it's probably heresy to say this, but I'm going to go with it anyway.
She is basically playing the same character. Although I think Poppins is a better film.
Julie Christie was wonderful; it is Richard Burton who was robbed. He lost for THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD to Lee Marvin for CAT BALLOU.
Rod Steiger also rocked in THE PAWNBROKER which features Thelma Oliver, pre-Sweet Charity.
NO.
Julie Christie was spellbinding in Darling. The best performance of that year, hands down.
But, but, but...
Julie Christie makes me go misty.
Julie Christy won an OSCAR? Don't be ridiculous, she can't even comb her HAIR!

And we were talking about the New Christy Minstrels just this morning.
I love it!
Anyone who doesn't think Julie Andrews deserved an Oscar (still does deserve one), for THE SOUND OF MUSIC, is a stupid whore. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
ABSOLUTELY NOT.
~ She already won an Oscar for playing a governess/nanny in MARY POPPINS.
The role of "Maria" in THE SOUND OF MUSIC was *hardly* a stretch.
