Scripps said that women over 30 who owned property, or were married to someone who owned property, were eligible to vote. So that's Cora, at least, and doesn't Mary own half of Downton? How old is Mary now anyway?
Okay, I've thought about this enough. :)
Mary is now 31 in the series, Edith is 30 and Sybil died at 25.
Edith is 30?! No wonder she's so anxious to hitch her wagon. Goodness.
The UK parliament has, since medieval times, had two houses - the Commons and the Lords. At the time Downton started, in 1912, the House of Commons provided political representation for the "common man" and the House of Lords provided political representation for titled aristocracy. Though I'm not a constitutional historian, the way I understand matters is that Cora, Mary and Edith's representation would have been done through Robert's birth right to sit and vote in the House of Lords, whilst Isobel's representation would have been done through her husband's right to vote for an MP to represent them in the House of Commons. By 1920 Isobel would have had that right for herself but, as Cora, Mary and Edith remain titled aristocracy they have no rights to vote for an MP in the House of Commons.
This was a time of major constitutional change in the UK - you've heard the Dowager refer disdainfully to "Lloyd George" throughout all four series. He was the MP, Chancellor and Prime Minister who significantly reduced the constitutional power and influence of the aristocracy at that time and secured numerous significant and long-lasting benefits for the rest of society.

Well, Dowton Abbey's Christmas Episode (episode 9) Won't take place at Christmas, at least we have been promised no one dies.

I'm going to try to avoid reading about the Christmas episode. I'm sad tonights episode will be the last one till then. I can't imagine how many loose ends/storylines they will be able to bring together in just this episode.
Well we are down one Valet. Good episode but sorry to see it end. Curious that it is released on DVD in the UK tomorrow. I wonder if that will have the Christmas episode on it as well?
Time to do a little research. :)
Found it on Amazon UK but it doesn't say how many episodes.

In the past, the Christmas episode was not included in the UK series sets, but was released on its own DVD after it aired. I assume it's still the same case.
Anyway, I haven't watched any of this series yet-- I've been to busy to search for the episodes, and I haven't had much interest due to the sort of "meh" response it seems to be getting. Of course, I'll still watch it when it airs on PBS.
******SPOILER******
So, did Bates do it or didn't he? There was a lot of people around who witnessed it so how could he have done it? At the same time, Bates asking Mr.Green some questions and then taking the day off really makes you wonder. Hopefully it will be resolved on The Christmas Episode. All in all, I thought this was the best episode of the season.Even though it was 90 minutes in the UK, I saw it with the commercials edited out so it was only an hour and six minutes.
I don't know if he did it or not, but frankly...I don't care.
Bates has always been my least favorite character. He should've been hanged last year. Please let this be resolved in the Christmas special (which is NOT on the UK DVDs...they save it for their prime slot on Christmas Day)...I couldn't stand a re-hash of the Mrs.Bates murder trial. Though if the next one were to have a different ending, well, it would be worth it I suppose. Deja vu, anyone?
Maybe they will leave it as an unanswered question, like the Patrick imposter thingy.
I still like the show a lot, though, and enjoyed this season thoroughly.
Thanks for the history lesson, Scripps.
So what do they do sell the Christmas episode as a single dvd after it airs?
Couldn't find the listing at first.

That's what Gorlois said. :)
In any case, the DVD won't be out until it airs on TV, so it makes no odds to me.
Branson fans might be interested in this TV interview with Allen Leech - I know there are probably a ton of clips on youtube of the cast, but I thought he was particularly funny and adorable in this one. There's a perfunctory mention of some horror movie he's in (which actually doesn't sound bad) but after the first few minutes it's all Downton.
Has he put on a couple of lbs or something, because he has gotten even better looking, no?
Enjoy!
When he is introduced and they begin playing the music, it sounded like the theme to X-Files. Never knew how much the two themes sound a like.
Ha! Now I can hear that too. I think he has put on a bit of weight -- I noticed that this year in general. Still is very dreamy.
I thought the finale was the best episode too -- which is too bad that this season, while never a chore to watch or anything, seemed to take so much time to gain momentum. I'm hoping for a great Xmas episode though.
So do people think Rose had any genuine love for the bandleader, or was it all just to shock her mom?
And in the clip of his horror film, is he co-starring with the Scottish actor from Agents of SHIELD?

As long as next season isn't about Mr. Bates on trial again. For that reason, I don't think he did it. Maybe he picked up a Christmas present for Anna? This season was pretty light (well except for Anna's storyline). Then again, compared to the events of last season, it was nice to get a little drama break.
Little bit off topic here, but Julian Fellows did a Christmas movie a few years back with Maggie Smith and Hugh Bonneville.Watch closely and you'll see some other characters from Downton Abbey make brief appearances, one of them being Allen Leech, who is a little younger and thinner. The movie is called FROM TIME TO TIME and is available to watch on Netflix. If you want a light fluffy Christmas fantasy movie, then check it out.

It was a steady season and didn't build momentum, and I was disappointed there wasn't more of the social history that set series 1 apart from the others. But, thankfully, there were none of the ridiculous soap operatics that so discredited series 2.
As for Bates and Green, there may have been loads of people around but in the crowd density they would have been looking straight ahead and so wouldn't have noticed if Green had tripped over something such as, for example, a walking stick...
This looks magnificent.
And I love the way Shirley delivers her line:
"My world is coming nearer. And your world..."

Episode one can be seen free....and there are ways to see all for a small fee now, too
Episode one is available free online, and there are sites where you can download a viewer which gives you a British IP address, and then for a small fee you get the season.
If this has already been mentioned, sorry...just don't want to read through all these. I found this by doing a google search of "watch Season 4 Downton Abbey"

So looking forward to the Christmas episode later tonight. Also was nice to see there is a Christmas episode of Call the Midwife also on tonight.
Hopefully others were able to watch. Picked up about the time Lady Edith came back from being away for a few months. Without commercials it ran for about 85 mins or so. Now have to wait till the fall of 2014 for series 5.
