I forgot Siobhan Finneran wasn't coming back until I watched the first episode.
Strange she would take a job alongside that Scottish lady's maid who hated her so much, but what the hey, she'll have plenty of opportunities for vengeful scheming in her new position too.
I swore I wouldn't ruin this season for myself by being overly critical and nitpicky, and so I shan't. I liked the opening episode.
When do Nigel Harman and Paul Giamatti make their debuts?

Well, I think the idea was that she'd be REPLACING her. That's what the hatred was all about, and a lady doesn't need two lady's maids.
Ah, got it.
Oh my God. Well, I guess we know now why they didn't send out the previews for this week. I'm still shaking from watching that. I have no words- that was horrifying.
Very good episode all the way around. I had a feeling the issue I think you are talking about was going to happen. Lets see what happens now in 9 months time.
Hopefully, Mrs. Hughes will break her promise.
i think Mr Bates will put two and two together. I have to go back and look but who called to Anna from the door right at the end of the episode?
I think it was Bates. Also, I realized Edna wasn't much better- talking in the servants' hall about how winning the game was "good luck" for "later", purposely getting someone who had already turned her down drunk, then sneaking into his room at night? That verges dangerously close to resembling something pretty nasty.
I went back to look. Hard to make out face wise but it sounded more like Alfred.

The guy who said good-bye to her? That was the man that raped her.
Green was the one who said good-bye to her in the hall, but I think the one who yelled "Anna" as she walked away was Bates.
I'm not that blind Phyllis. :) As Cape pointed out as I said it was the last scene, last second of the episode. Bates makes sense it was just the voice was throwing me for a loop and we know he really couldnt go running after her.
I remember reading something in which Brendan Coyle said taht Bates was going to be in a "dark place" this series. Guess we know what will start it...

Sorry, Huss! I misread! I'm sure you are not blind! :)
Oh, dear. This episode. I don't know what to think.
I would hate for Anna to be raped, and for them then to make it all about Bates.
I was just thinking that maybe I would actually like him this season, what with him being all nice to Molesly 'n' all last week. I hope he doesn't get all victim-y/righteous-y/weight-of-the-world-on-his-shoulders-y again.
Really, truly awful to watch. I'm really not keen on the whole thing. Rape is so terribly abused as a narrative device that I'm always very doubtful of it being handled respectfully. I guess we'll just have to see.
Running around like a chicken without a head trying to find a damn link. Help?
This might help if it works.

The BBC are giving really big coverage to the event, but it appears the broadcast channel ITV only got 60 complaints and an unspecified number to the regulator.
Are you looking for a link for the episode?
Anyone see tonight's episode? Gotta love Mrs.Hughes.
Just watched last night's episode. I know I'll be in the minority but I'm sorry to see Braithwaite go. She was delightfully Danvers-esque. I don't know what I think of Mary and Tony, but the best I can label it is indifferent. Mary used to be my favorite character, but since Matthew's died I don't find her nearly as engaging. I guess my current favorite it Anna, but anyway sympathies are far more tilted downstairs this season so far.
GlindatheGood22- I feel the same way about Mary and Tony. I just can't muster enough feeling either way to say I like or dislike them. Honestly, that's kind of how I'm feeling about the whole season. With so many of the key originals gone, it just doesn't feel like Downton anymore. Remember the days when it was romantic and elegant and engaging?
PBS is rerunning the old episodes every Sunday now, and I was really taken by the contrast when I watched their repeat of 2x01 last night.

We finally got around to watching last week's episode last night and indifferent is my attitude, too. I didn't at all mind if I had to be out of the room. In seasons past, I would have paused and waited. Now, it feels like I am watching out of habit.
In 1924 London would a male African American singer really step off stage and dance with a white English woman with no objections from other patrons?
I kinda agree about the indifference, but I still think this season is better than the last one. I know she always seems to play second fiddle to Maggie Smith, but can I just say that Penelope Wilton is amazing. LOVE her.
